Note the "encounters" bit should not be taken literally. It's quite likely the gunship is so far away or beyond cloud cover that you only clearly see the salvo of shells and bullets that are shot down, with the gunship itself only a miniscule dot high in the air if you even have time to look for it (not that spotting it would do you any good, man portable anti-air weapons wouldn't reach it).

Note that gunship is also occasionally used to refer to gunboats and attack helicopters, which this tag is not for.
