Dedicated local host

Software concept

Has dedicated local host/server application available, either bundled with the game or available for free as a download. Usually available for more platforms than the game itself is available for.

Alternate name: Dedicated local server

The first video game about Dedicated local host was released on May 8, 2001.

Valve, Devolver Digital and Chucklefish has published most of these games

Linux is common additional platform for dedicated server software.

Unlike regular locally hosted servers, dedicated servers do not need any graphical output capabilities and their requirements are lower than those of regular game servers. A lot of processing required for gamer experience can be omitted completely with most of the processing purely focused on transmitting data, some management functionality and any anti-cheat features. But besides that, the system requirements compared to the actual game are minuscule.
