These are usually 6/8 wheeled or tracked light armored vehicles with primary purpose as infantry fire support. Essentially light tanks when tracked but with specific role as infantry support, while wheeled variants are essentially armored cars.
Have much smaller transport capacity than APCs but better armed, but nothing to rival main battle tanks.
