Alternate names: 3-clause BSD, Simplified BSD License

The 3-clause BSD license is not approved by the Open Source Initiative (OSI). It is approved of by the Free Software Foundation so long as the original author releases their source. Thus it is Free Software but not Open Source. A developer is allowed to create software and release the binary (and anything else) under the 3-clause BSD license without releasing their source code. Others can then redistribute, and mod the binary release, and redistribute mods. The original license and copyright must always be attached. This is not Free Software. Plus it makes not sense whatsoever as there are less complicated ways to permit such use of binary only releases. If source code is release and other authors use it, then they are bound to redistribute everything they fiddle with. In theory, they could mod the binary without modding the source and would only be bound to redistribute the binary.

Note also that New BSD is GPL compatible. GPL code can be converted to BSD. BSD code can theoretically be converted to GPL but still requires the BSD license inclusion. Note that the binary only release becomes impossible when converting either direction.
