Besides the obviously alien appearance, light/energy bridges provide trivial way for drawbridges to exist in hitech place without need of mechanical (moving) machines. Also provide a way of failing bridges that don't need to be destroyed for it to happen, and so can be restored to working order without supernatural means or excessive time in building a new one.
