MUDs running on LPMud driver or any of its derivatives. LPMud is a powerful engine with very little hard-coded functionality besides the LPC (a C-like scripting language) interpreter, unlike many other MUD drivers which rely on hardcoded info.

Due to LPMud's nature as an interpreter, it is (or was) in an unique position to allow development of the game world to continue during the game's uptime. All new functionality can be added, removed and modified without ever taking the server offline. The most unique nature of this is that the game developers can create even an interface within the game itself to modify the game as much as you can from the outside, giving the MUD wizards even more wizard-like status as they literally bend the reality of the MUD as they "play" in it.
Note: Drivers are to MUDs pretty much what engines are to other games.
