Mostly a Japanese genre of fantasy anime/manga characterized by a 5-17 year old girl with magical powers. This can be someone born to magical family, land or so forth or a girl somehow gifted with magical powers.

Since the spread of anime/manga to the west, there has been some instances of the fiction created there as well, such as W.I.T.C.H and Winx club, and Power Puff Girls to lesser degree (though that was probably not originally influenced by anime/manga).

These are generally aimed at the 5-12 or so year old girls. Though some use various levels of female nudity to target a young male audience.
