Monasteries are commonly depicted maintaining some level of self-sufficiency to limit contact with the outside world so the monks may devote all their attention to their duties.

Modern monasteries have more contact with the outside world as they're often not (completely) exempt from taxes and need to gain at least some income to deal with that and some other issues, such as healthcare.

* Chapel - commonly a monastery includes a chapel, though not necessarily.
