Commonly a gimmick in some select locations, in oldest works this has likely worked by requiring a step of faith into nothingess (the passage forms only at the very instant it is needed, not before). In more modern works the passages are usually formed slightly ahead of you, allowing you to see where it leads and be somewhat sure of its existence.
