In games without separate combat mode or similar, this post part may simply mean that the protagonist reaches a state at which they're no longer in immediate danger. However, hiding behind a corner or similar does NOT generally cause this. Either completely escaping the adversaries or defeating them triggers this. Escape may actually NOT trigger the restoration process at all.
