While their are many variants, the classic rubber duck bath toy is yellow, has a short and wide or fat exaggerated yellow bill, a large spheroid head with an anthropomorphic expression. It generally has a flat bottom (so it stands upright when not in water) and floats (also upright, ideally). Another common feature is a squeaker; these variants are flexible so inside air can be squeezed out to operate the squeaker. Originality made of rubber, later ones used plastic, vinyl, wood, and other materials. This has not done much to change the "rubber duck" designation. The term "Rubber Duckie" is almost as common than the more proper "Rubber Duck"; despite "Rubber Duckie" originally being the name of a single specific rubber duck. Seasame Street's Ernie had a rubber duck bath toy named "Duckie". The song performed by Ernie, "Rubber Duckie", was a huge boost for the popularity of the rubber duck bath toy as well as the "Rubber Duckie" designation for all bath toys of this type. Rubber Duck bath toys are most popular in North America, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

Many western countries have rubber duck races wherein contestants release their ducks in a river and wait to see which one crosses a point downstream first. This is nearly always used to fund charities. While these have raised concerns about the environment, the impact actually tends to have a net effect of being less harmful since the course is closed to boat traffic for duration of the event; boat traffic having much more impact than a motorless, non-wake creating, inert, single material, self contained, silent, non-fossil fueled, bladeless float. The 'flocks' of ducks release are collected and reused for the annual event or event sent to races elsewhere. They tend to be used in waterways where obstructions (that were already present) block their passage to the sea (where their impact would also be negligible) and many races take the additional precaution of using floating barriers to entirely block the passage of ducks from continuing past a certain point or even contacting the shore. Every duck is accounted for. In the extremely rare event that they escape or get stuck along the course, they are likely to be recovered by children anyway who may collect a bounty, and/or prestige and/or the the duck itself for the reported capture. recovery rate is statistically similar to 100%.

A storm at sea in 1992 released 29,000 bath toys 'into the wild' from the cargo vessel they were on. Remnants of the this 'flock' of rubber duck style toys continue to roam the world's ocean to this day. Many become trapped in the Arctic Ice but are also being release again due to seasonal melting and an overall melting trend.

It has been reported and never denied that the Queen Elizabeth II has a rubber duck bath toy that wears a crown.
