Usually this is for saving game progress. This often includes saving the character's name and/or highscores/statistics. The Later two are sometime the only data saved. Other data that has been known to be saved is settings, custom skins, in-game photos, and custom journals.

The first Save RAM video game was released on May 27, 1986.
