Data saved by internal memory in the cartridge even after being unplugged. Usually a battery powers RAM chips for this purpose but a few use Flash RAM

Usually this is for saving game progress. This often includes saving the character's name and/or highscores/statistics. The Later two are sometime the only data saved. Other data that has been known to be saved is settings, custom skins, in-game photos, and custom journals.
