Uses Telnet/SSH text-based network protocol, likely meaning any basic Telnet/SSH client, including more advanced clients such as MUD clients, can be used to play the game.

This is essentially platform-independent way, similar to HTTP, to make games playable on multitude of actual platforms.

Things like rsh, rlogin and rexec are variants of this, though they probably haven't been used for any games.

SSH is pretty much same as telnet and the others except it uses encrypted communication.
