Alternate name: Transient research

The only way this will ever make sense is that the things you research are sort of like adjustments to them to better deal with the environment, like your equipment was made for desert operations and you suddenly find yourself in a tropic jungle, there's certainly some ways to improve how your equipment works in that settings compared to the previous one, though the change is unlikely to be drastic one. Also, after doing the change once and you don't change them again after it, the transient upgrade becomes meaningless again.

"Upgrades" to new facilities that extend their capabilities do NOT count.
