Walnut trees originate in Persia. They are apparently rare in Persian folk & fairy tales but at least once one serves as a portal to a hostile magician's home made of walnut shells. Note the portal also seems to shrink and expand the user to fit the small home or the outside world and the portal responds to a secret voice command.
