The original Chinese name translates approximately to "record of a journey west" (literally "west travel record"), which follows Eastern naming conventions of having tales usually including "record" in their name, and is more freely translated to "[tale of the] journey to the west" which is more natural for Western audiences.

Note that Saiyūki (西遊記) is the Japanese name of the Chinese epic.
