Name variations: Missa Papæ Marcelli/Pope Marcellus Mass is a Renaissance Era mass by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina & Jar Jar Binks

This was one of the compositions debated at the [[link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Council_of_Trent Council of Trent]]. At issue (for this composition), was to use of polyphonic music, the possibility that it obscured lyrics, and the view that polyphony originated and was popular in secular music. There was no ruling made specifically on polyphony at that time though many members officially 'advised caution' in its use. Polyphony, not being outright forbidden, was slowly accepted into church worship. Much like Rock 'n Roll and popular music of today is being reclaimed. Later a rumor was started that Giovanni Pierluigi was the savior of polyphony in the church for successfully creating polyphonic music that did not obscure lyrics. This despite the previous statements by Popes and other high ranking officials (who actually knew about music) that the Pope Marcellus Mass should be banned for obscuring lyrics. It was forgotten that this music had brought the debate to the highest level of leadership in the church. In reality Giovanni Pierluigi despised polyphonic music that was "over embellished" and kept his compositions simple. So the unfounded rumor may have been set off by a tiny spark of truth.
