EarthBound 0 is an original RPG that takes place in rural America in the 1980's. One might say, 'Original? How can an RPG be original? Don't all RPG's involve knights and stuff?' This is not the case in EarthBound 0. For one, medieval style weapons have been replaced by such oddities as yo-yo's and frying pans. The classic dragons, dark elves, and other demons have been replaced with possessed cars, crazed hippies, and many other off-the-wall enemies. The story is a classic however. Strange occurences begin to happen, a boy sets out to investigate these and his own mysterious past and psychic abilities. He is joined by several friends who aid him in his final goal, which is to defeat the vengeful, conqueristic alien known as Giegue. But it won't be easy. EarthBound 0 is known as Mother in Japan, where it was released in the late 1980's for the Nintendo Famicom system. It was hugely successful and spawned dozens of strategy guides, comic books, soundtracks and more. EarthBound 0 has four main characters: Ninten, Ana, Loid, and Teddy. The first three resemble characters in EarthBound for the SNES, but there doesn't seem to be any specific connection between the plot of the two games. A lot of the places and enemies have the same or similar names, however. Nintendo translated the game to English, but never released the game. In 1998, a group of ROM translators discovered that Nintendo had auctioned off a prototype of the EarthBound 0 cartridge. They contacted the individual who had acquired the game, and made an agreement to borrow the game for a few hundred dollars so they could dump the cartridge to a ROM file. That is how we are able to play EarthBound 0 now. The actual name of the game was 'EarthBound'. However, since the sequel to Mother, which was released in North America, is also called EarthBound, the game has been dubbed 'EarthBound 0'.
