All Coelacanths and related species were deemed extinct since the end of the Cretaceous period by scientists until one was caught in 1938, and several others at later dates.

This is a real fish and there are two different species. They are slightly adapted from their Cretaceous ancestors.
Two extant species are known currently, but due to their nature as deep-water fish, progress is slow in studying them farther.
