Generally, this was popular in the Early history of videogames when displays (or just light bulbs) did not generate colors (perhaps even binary color) or complex graphics (sometimes no more than a dot, or two, or even a full line or basic shape in rare cases). Early arcade games sometimes used monochrome displays covered in colored tape. However, anything a developers chooses to instruct the player to cover the display with, in part or whole, for whatever reason, would be a Screen Overlay for the purposes of this group. For instance, all Home Computer Software Super Micro games are binary color with overlays built into the cartridge-screens.
