Should be used only where not expected or mandatory, usually open world games not set in space.
This generally does not take into account what you run into, evade obstacles or opponents, etc. it just makes long journeys less taxing for the player as they don't need to hold the walk forward button down for 3-10 minutes straight just to get to the next town, instead they toggle the auto-walk and just make sure nothing too bad happens on the way. Often a middle-way solution for fast travel where the travelling isn't exactly fast nor automatic but still not as dreary.
For vehicles this is usually achieved by locking speed to full throttle, 60 km/h, or some such, often with several options.
This is NOT for auto-scrolling games where auto-move is in effect no matter what, nor is this for fast travel systems.
