Prize Fighter

published by Sega in 1996, developed by Digital Pictures, running on Saturn
This game has been canceled.
type: fighting

Description

Prize Fighter was never released for the Sega Saturn due in part to Digital Pictures bankruptcy. The game has a release date of November, 1996, listed but other (more notable) games such as Maximum Surge had already been cancelled due to the company no longer being in business in late 1996, as well as most projects had at that point moved to PC development as well.

Their sources also site info on the company closing:

"Is This the End of FMV As We Know It?" Next Generation magazine, October 1995

I also did original research as far as I could. I lost all of my back issues of different magazines a few years back, but I believe that one of the magazines like Diehard Gamefan Magazine had an article on this also. the company was closed/bankrupt by early/mid 1996 and had stopped production on Sega Saturn titles as early as 1995.

Furthermore there is no Catalog ID Number to be found for Prize Fighter for the Sega Saturn so far as I can find. One of the most comprehensive list of titles listed in the US that I have come across can be checked here: http://www.sega-saturn.net/usgames.htm (he lists 244 games instead of 251 because he has the re-released titles such as netlink editions listed as one game, same for Mystaria/Blazing Heroes, etc. All 251 separate releases are listed though). There are others such as the Digital Press Rarity Guide which can also be consulted, but again there is no Catalog ID Number for a release of Prize Fighter in the USA. As far as a Japanese release I've confirmed through a friend who is a Digital Pictures collector (I know, right? He actually loves all their games) that it was never released there. I also checked it against one of the better filled out Japanese databases (http://www.sega-saturn.net/jpgames.htm) as well as tried finding a Japanese Catalog ID Number for it. I came up with nothing. I did the same across the European database (http://www.sega-saturn.net/palspiele.htm same guy as the Japanese/US database, he has a pretty great Euro database, he has from what I can tell the most accurate Sega Saturn databases on the internet, and I even helped compile a few).

If anybody has any contrary evidence I'd love to see it, but the fact is that Digital Pictures was dead by 1996, and had only a small handful of games released across any consoles by the company, and Prize Fighter, while most likely considered, and probably even worked on for the Sega Saturn, was never released.
