Antarctic Adventure  Konami1985The player takes the role of an Antarctic penguin, racing to disparate research stations owned by different countries in Antarctica. The gameplay is similar to Sega's Turbo, but plays at a much slower pace, and features platform game elements. The penguin, later named Penta, must reach the next station before time runs out while avoiding sea lions and breaks in the ice. Throughout the levels, fish jump out of ice holes and can be caught for bonus points. The game, like many early video games, has no ending – when the player reaches the last station, the game starts from the first level again, but with increased difficulty.
Source: Wikipedia***You control a cute penguin and have to reach the next base in a certain amount of time. While racing above the snowy antarctic landscape you have to avoid cracks in the ice, sea lions and other creatures. The gameplay resembles that of standard racing games, but it is a nice change to control a penguin and not a car. And this penguin subsequently became some kind of Konami's mascot in the 80's with him appearing in many more Konami games.

Astro Invader  Stern;Leijac Corporation (Konami)1980Astro Invader is a fixed screen shoot 'em up. The player moves their laser base across the bottom of the screen and has to shoot down the aliens that appear above. What sets Astro Invader apart from other early shoot 'em ups is that the aliens, after being dropped from their mothership, position themselves in columns. Once a column is full the lowest alien drops down and suicide dives towards the player. As they hit the ground they explode and the player must make sure they are not within the blast radius. In addition to the standard aliens there are also UFOs that appear in the middle and to the sides of the screen. These must be shot down as they will kill the player when landing, no matter where the player is positioned. The game is over when all three lives are lost.

The Japanese version (Kamikaze) has some differences. Most noticeable is that it has more columns and that the UFOs only appear in the middle of the screen. It also has regular aliens that attack on the sides of the screen without going through the columns. Aliens that crash into the ground have a greater blast radius than in the US version.

Bill Elliot's Nascar Challenge Konami;GameTek (Distinctive Software)1991YOU'LL FEEL A DRAFT

Throw it into gear and let it scream. Konami presents the most authentic NASCAR endorsed simulation to race your computer circuits. Co-designed by Winston Cup Champion Bill Elliott and Distinctive Software, creator of Test Drive and The Duel, this tests your stock car mettle on eight official, perfectly scaled NASCAR tracks like Daytona, Talladega and Watkins Glen. Bit map graphics and a scaling technique are combined to create cars so real that you can even read the car's make when you go bumper to bumper.

Modify your stock car to each track then drop the hammer on Bill Elliott and a field of NASCAR's finest in single races or compete for the Cup in the Championship Season.

This simulation has one of the most comprehensive instant replays ever. You can play back the action from six camera positions (with zooms) including a never before seen three quarter tower perspective. You'll also view your realistic pit team from a crew chief's perspective as you choose from seven different maintenance options and watch them scramble to save seconds.

Then test your skills against a field of game players in Bill Elliott's NASCAR Challenge Contest. Send in your highest score and you could win a trip for two to the 1992 Daytona 500 to meet Bill Elliott and compete with two other contest winners in a simulation race for a 1992 Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe! Even if you don't have the point standings for Daytona, you can win a Bill Elliott remote control stock car or genuine Bill Elliott/Konami racing jacket.

So buckle up for safety and buckle down for Daytona. Bill awaits your challenge!***

[27]***The sequel of Castlevania made a similar change in style as the Zelda-sequel. Konami added RPG-elements, puzzles and left the strict linear path. Technically the game is excellent with great graphics and music and atmospheric surroundings. However the game also has some very strange game play elements. There are not enough useful hints for some puzzles and I felt that without a walkthrough you would feel a bit lost. It is actually the same kind of problem that I had with the Zelda-sequel. The cartridge version was released only in the US/EU a good year after the original Japanese Famicom Disk System version.***In this one-player adventure, you'll take on the role of Simon Belmont once again and duel to the death with Count Dracula. Grab your legendary whip, Vampire Killer, and roam freely through Transylvania on a quest to find the count's missing body parts-these are the key to breaking an evil curse. This quest won't be easy, though, for you must battle hideous fiends who stalk the land. In addition to the intense action and tight control the Castlevania series is known for, this sequel also introduced several unique game-play elements into the fold. Build experience the longer you play, buy weapons and items from merchants, or talk with villagers to get clues (some of which are false). Watch as day turns to night and then back again. Take a deep breath, steady your nerves, and help Simon end his curse and defeat the count once and for all.***Outstanding twist of Castlevania to a RPG (AKA the Dark Side)... Best game in the series until Symphony of the Night came out and kicked everything's arse. Better have a lot of patience, though.***A different style of Castlevania--an actual QUEST instead of normal walk through castle, kill bad guys. Some great tunes, too. Because if you fail to destroy him now, he will rule the night forever.***
[27]***Beautiful background graphics and monsters, really good music and gameplay that stays true to the original Castlevania. Circus Charlie  Soft Pro (Konami)1986***In Circus Charlie you play a young clown through five side scrolling stages, which eventually repeat itself endlessly. The arcade original featured a sixth stage which was omitted from the Famicom version. In the first stage you ride a lion and have to jump through circles of fire. The second (extremely easy) stage lets you jump over monkeys; in the third stage you must jump from one circus ball onto another. In the last two stages you have to ride on a horse and finally swing yourself from rope to rope. The game is playable, but since it is pretty easy to finish all levels in a few minutes, the game has no long motivating content and you have virutally seen everything the game has to offer. Graphics and sound are nothing special and merely average even for a rather early Famicom game. NESlabelimageminimize

Combat School  Konami1987For those of you that have never heard of it, it is like Hyper Olympics in military kind of way. You are a trainee at boot camp, where you have to undertake many tasks ranging from a race against your opponent over obstacles such as various height walls, to shooting numerous targets on the shooting range. The only dissapointing event is the Iron Man race where you race against your opponent with a birds-eye view. In the race you get to use a boat on water, which gives you a great advantage over the computer opponent because I dont think he ever uses it.

The control is virtually the same as Hyper Olympics in that you have speed buttons that you press, and also an action button which is used for jumping etc..
Unless you cheat, and use an auto-fire joypad, you will get very tired as you pummel down on the buttons in energy consuming events such as arm-wrestling, and the penalty round which you get to by only just failing an event.

If I remember correctly from the spectrum version, after you have completed all events and beaten your instructor in a fight, you get to do a side-scrolling mission with a green-beret feel to it.

Crackout  Konami;Palcom (Konami)1991"Crackout" is Konami's answer to Taito's [game=#7541]Arkanoid[/game] and was first released for the Famicom Disk System in 1986. A whole five years later Konami released the game in Europe and Australia in cartridge form for the NES. The gameplay is - as with most Breakout clones - very similar. All the obvious bonuses like multi balls, a longer paddle, rockets and so on are included. There are even a few mini bosses. The game features 44 levels. The controls are good and the first levels are fun. But I think that changes in the second half of the game. Konami build lots of non-destructible objects inside the levels, often too near in front of the players paddle, resulting in many cheap deaths while you are desperately trying to hit the last few blocks. At least you can continue your game via a password system. I think in 1991 this game felt even more unimpressive than five years before.***NES-37-ESP, published by Palcom 1991 in Spain (PAL Region B)
