So Dragon Quest, with its simple but very addictive structure, was an instant hit and the start for the most successfull RPG series in Japan. And it is pretty good. Not as non-linear and confusing than many early CRPGs. Nice graphics and music as well.***Product Number: NES-DQ-CAN NES-DQ-USA
Dragon Warrior is called Dragon Quest in Japan. The Japanese version (1986) used passwords but the US (1990) and Canadian versions used battery backed save RAM
A pen and paper RPG called Dragon Quest had already been published in the United States. For copyright reasons, the name Dragon Warrior was used. However, it turns out there was also Dragon Warriors RPG in existence at the time.

The English version was translated and published by Nintendo and strictly uses Early Modern English in conversational dialogs. Often mistakenly called King James English or Shakespearian English, but those styles were in fact derived from the Early Modern style (King James style also borrows extensively from Middle English). Early Modern English is in fact a bit more understandable than King James or Shakespearian English, for those who understand the contemporary Modern English of the late 20th century. The Japanese names for the characters and locations were changed into English names that better fit with the Early Modern English and a northern Europeanish location. The changes are influenced by the Arthurian Legends. The Nintendo version also made significant improvement in graphics and game mechanics. The number of menus was reduced. The protagonist could face multiple directions (instead of south only). Direction of talking and actions was automatically based on the direction the protagonist was facing rather than needing to be manually specified. Shorelines looked a bit like breaking waves instead of abrupt hard edges into sea water.

Dragon Quest II: Akuryou no Kamigami  Enix (Chunsoft)1987
[30]***Though the time of his deeds has long faded, still the name of Erdrick commands respect among even the greatest of warriors. Stories of his lineage are legendary throughout the land and have been retold through the ages in the most remote villages and townships. Long ago a young man, who was a descendant of Erdrick, saved the Kingdom of Alefgard by defeating the dreaded Dragonlord. The young man came to this land accompanied by Princess Gwaelin. Together they built TORLAND.***Long ago, a descendant of Erdrick the Great defeated the Dragonlord and recovered the mystical ball of light in Alefgard. Under the rule of his children and their descendants there was prosperity throughout the land for generations. One day, however, this peace was shattered by the wicked Sorcerer Hargon. Now it is time for you to claim your birthright as the Prince of Midenhall, for Erdrick's blood also flows through your veins. With the Prince of Cannock and the Princess of Moonbrooke by your side, you are about to embark on a most adventurous journey. Use your strength and cunning for you are about to enter the world of Dragon Warrior II.***Bigger and more non-linear than the first Dragon Quest. Now you have three characters in your party. There ist still very much time spend with leveling your characters via random monster fights. Perhaps the most difficult title in the whole series.***Dragon Warrior is called Dragon Quest in Japan. The Japanese version used passwords but the US version used battery backed save RAM.

In keeping with Nintendo's policy of removing 'religious' references from American versions of their games, crosses on churches were replaced with the Star of David and coffins with crosses on them were replaced with ghosts. ?.

Dragon Quest III: Soshite Densetsu e...  Enix (Chunsoft)1988
[30]***The Legacy of Erdrick Continues...

On your 16th birthday, you wake to the sound of your mother's voice. "This is the day you are to see the King of Aliahan." Your mother has raised you to be a brave lad and you must now carry on your father's legacy. He was a legendary warrior of Aliahan, who suffered death at the hands of a fiendish monster. "If not stopped, the Archfiend Baramos will certainly destroy our world", the King says. Your challenge, your destiny - the Destruction of Baramos. With three allies of your choosing, you are set to embark on your quest to save the world from Baramos...your final enemy?

* 8 Classes of characters to select from: Hero, Soldier, Pilgrim, Wizard, Fighter, Merchant, Sage, and Goof-Off.
* Change classes of your characters mid-game.
* Main story contains dozens of intricate subplots.
* Travel day and night.
* Gamble on monster battles at the Fight Rings.
* Select from an expanded arsenal of weapons, armor and spells.
* Visit over 40 castles, towns, villages and shrines.***The third game in the "Dragon Quest" series is a big improvement compared to its two predecessors. Your party now consists of four heroes, whose classes you are free to choose. The game is bigger, has a better storyline with a legendary story twist towards the end of the game and has some memorable places and scenes like the phantom ship. The job changing system is also very innovative and gives extra motivation to build your "ultimate" party. As this is an console RPG of the 80's the leveling-up process still consists mainly of fighting random monster encounters. The time you spend leveling is not as long as in its predecessors but its still there and can become a bit tedious. The graphics stay basically the same as before. Here and there a few animations more, but nothing spectacular. The same can be said about the music.***A popular urban myth says that there is a law in Japan that forbids the release of DragonQuest game on a schooldays. While this is sometime attributed to that fact that DragonQuest III caused a huge disruption when release on a schoolday, the fact is that Enix voluntarily decided to not release subsequent DragonQuest games on schooldays before the law went into effect.

The game has 14 full length songs available in the album, Dragon Quest III ~And Into the Legend...~ Remix Symphonic Suite by Sony Records in 1996. Not eligible for a Grammy due to the snubbing of Videogames as an art form.

Chronologically the third game published, and marked "III", but the storyline precedes the first DragonQuest game. It also is set in a different world than its timeline sequels. This world's geography largely parallels Earth and cities vaguely represent different cultures of earth. However it is clearly not earth and while it adheres to an early medieval technology level, it references Earth cultures that span many thousands of years apart from each other.
[Zerothis]***Dragon Warrior is called Dragon Quest in Japan. This game is a must-have. A great classical hero-who-saves-the-world story. There is a great remake of this game for the SNES, but it's only available to Japanese readers, at least until someone translates it.

Dragon Quest IV: Michibikareshi Monotachi  Enix (Chunsoft)1990As the legend of Erdrick slips into the past, it's time to begin anew. Ragnar, the King's General. Alena, the Princess. Taloon, the Merchant. Nara & Mara, the Dancer and the Fortune Teller. A Hero. Fulfill a prophesy. Is this your destiny? Experience this epic, multi-quest RPG!***This game approaches 16-bit quality. There are some neat technical tricks in this game, including dozens of characters on-screen without flickering. The story is divided into a Chapter structure. Early chapters introduces a main character (chp 4's main characters are a pair of sisters), has a unique quest for each spanning many years, and hints at the main story and future connections of these characters to come. Later chapters have main characters meeting to fulfill the main quest of the game. DQ3 was very open with character creation, sequential multi-classing, item vault and bank and other features. DQ4 returns to pre-made characters with set classes with a vengeance. But there are some added features to take full advantage of this. One is the wagon. Once the wagon is acquired, many characters, all main characters in fact, can join the party. The player selects and active subset while the rest wait in reserve. No more visiting a town somewhere to swap for a party best suited for the given task (like DQ3).
[Zerothis]***A Classic. The best Dragon Quest on NES. Dragon Warrior is the North American title.
[anonymous]***Dragon Warrior is the North American title. Dragon Quest: The Chapters of the Chosen is the European title. DragonQuest IV begins a new and independent storyline form the previous 3 games. This new storyline continues in DragonQuest V and DragonQuest VI.

Dragon Warrior IV: Unlimited is a bug fixed and generally improved version of Dragon Warrior IV. A hacked version, available on cartridge. Not offical.

Dragon Quest: The Hand of the Heavenly Bride  Chunsoft (Enix)1992A fantastic game, perhaps not the best in the series on SNES, but definitely a must-play classic.
A simple masterpiece.

I find it curious that there are people who vote for it with a grade 3, or lower, and so few have played or finished it.******
[30]***The Japanese subtitle literally means "Hand of Heaven". Titled Dragon Quest: The Hand of the Heavenly Bride in Europe.

The second patch was done by [[link:http://byuu.cinnamonpirate.com/ byuu]]. byuu's translation is a bit more literal, but both patches are very well-done, so take your pick.

Jesus: Kyoufu no Bio Monster  King Records (Chunsoft)1989In 2061, there has as yet been no contact with extraterrestrial lifeforms. Recently, however, some sort of life had been detected in Halley's Comet - which is oddly headed straight for Earth's solar system. The nations of Earth (or at least the United States, Japan, Italy, France, Germany, China, Brazil, and the Soviet Union) quickly band together to form an elite group of astronauts to investigate. They are to launch in two separate ships from the skylab 'Jesus' and take a sample from the comet, analyze it, and the nations will decide what to do from there. On the same day that the first ship, the appropriately named 'Comet', harvests gas from the comet, it stops responding. The captain of the second ship sends you to investigate. The story that follows is one that is somewhat predictable, but it arrives at that point via so many appropriately-done twists and turns that the player will always keep guessing. Some of the scenes in the game are so well-done they have to be seen (and heard) in order to have the full effect.

Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken  Enix (Chunsoft)1985The first real adventure game for the NES (or any other console system) is a port from a popular game on Japanese homecomputer systems. Instead of typing in commands they changed the system to feature a command list in the rigt side of the screen which you could choose from. This control method set a standard among Japanese-style console adventure games. The game itself is only mildly interesting though. It doesn't have a save feature, neither via battery backup nor passwords. But that isn't really necessary, because the game is very short. The graphics of the few locations are not very detailed and in parts look like drawn by a six-year old kid. The game sold very well on the NES and paved the way for many successors with similar gameplay, but today the content feels rather shallow. The game didn't age very well. NESlabelimageminimize
