In the real-time combat sections, you must choose weapons and spells instantaneously, using the mouse-based interface. You will find many villages along the way, and you can gain clues and buy supplies at these. Amberstar | Thalion | 1992 | A thousand years ago, a young Black Magician named Tar valiantly fought the demon lord Thornahuun, who was revealed to be his own father. However, Thornahuun managed to possess his son's soul and corrupt it. Tar declared himself Lord Tarbos and brought terror to the land of Lyramion, before being locked away in a secure prison on the world's red moon. Now, a sorcerer named Marmion is trying to release him, with the intention of spreading horror through the land. A lone adventurer from the town of Twinlake must gather thirteen pieces of a powerful artifact known as Amberstar to prevent that from happening. Amberstar is a role-playing game which uses a top-down view for overworld travel and most indoor locations, and switches to a first-person pseudo-3D perspective when exploring cities and dungeons. Initially the player creates a single protagonist with randomly assigned attributes and no class designation. During the course of the game, additional characters (up to six active party members) can be found in different cities and other locations and recruited. Some of these characters already belong to established classes and come with their own abilities. Guilds of various classes (fighter, paladin, ranger, mage, monk, and thief) can be visited, where the protagonist and his class-less companions (if any) can be promoted. Choice of classes affects attributes, character growth, imposes equipment restrictions, etc. When leveling up, characters can train in specific locations, increasing attributes of the player's choice.*** [22]*** [52] | MS-DOS | labelimagesubject |

Aspic: Majaou no Noroi | Bothtec (Xtalsoft) | 1988 | "Aspic" is an RPG which originally appeared on Japanese homecomputers. For non Japanese speaking people this is one of those cryptical oldschool computer JRPGs that is unknown in the rest of the world. On the positive side there seems to be a good amount of content. It is not a pure dungeon crawler, but also features a large overworld. Fights take place in a special side-view environment and must be fought out via an action sequence. However, the game is very cumbersome to play. And technically I consider the game to be quite a disaster. The graphics look bad, the scrolling on the overworld is horrendously slow. The music is very annoying. I did not play very long, due to a lack of walkthrough, but I doubt I would have played it much longer even then. Being released after excellent 8-bit RPGs like "Dragon Warrior 3" or "Final Fantasy", the game feels like a few steps backwards into a time when RPGs were extreme hardcore and not user-friendly at all. | Famicom Disk System | labelimageminimize |

Black Crypt | Electronic Arts (Raven Software) | 1992 | Black Crypt was the first game title produced by Raven Software. Raven founders Brian and Steve Raffel had an idea for a Role Playing Game in the late 80's and set out to make it a reality. By April 1990, the brothers had brought two programmers aboard to assist them in the development of the game. The four produced a demo of Black Crypt and sent it out to several publishing companies. Electronic Arts (EA) saw the demo and agreed to publish the game in 1990. Black Crypt was released on March 20th, 1992. Black Crypt was originally designed to run on a Commodore Amiga with 1 MB of RAM. The graphic mode used was called Extra Half-Bright, which allowed for a user-defined palette of 32 colors (out of 4096 color choices). The mode then provided an additional 32 colors, which were half the brightness of the chosen colors. 'Copper' effects were used to do special effects, such as the teleport or water ripples. Black Crypt supported 4 channels of sound and was "hard drive installable." It was distributed on three 880k disks. In 1998, Raven Software programmer Rick Johnson released the first two levels of Black Crypt for the PC as Freeware. [Raven] | Amiga | labelimagesubject |
