They Call Me... The Skul  The Learning Company;SoftKey (Byron Preiss Multimedia Company;Saffire)1996In the North Putnam Maximum Security Correction Facility, strange things have been going on. Rumors of secret experiments taking place with some of the inmates, a strange Power Elite gang, and other criminals walking around with super powers. It it to this strange location that Steve Kane was taken when he was wrongly convicted of highway homicide. His life was saved on day by a man named Big John, which unleashed strange powers within him and turned him into the Skul.

They Call me the Skul is one among a series of Virtual Comics. The main purpose of these products is to create an interactive comic book reader that can be sold on cd-roms and viewed on a computer screen. The product also features a shooter game. The Settlers II: Veni, Vidi, Vici  Blue Byte1996Veni, Vidi, Vici is the sequel of the well-known Settlers game. You start your settlement with only one main building. To build any other buildings, you first must find a source for stones and wood. So you start to build little roads where your men transport all the different goods along. There exist more than 30 different professions your men can have, and many different building types. Of course, there are other settlers in your area, too, so war is unavoidable.

The graphics are now in SVGA, and the soundtrack is available as CD-Audio or MIDI.***

The Settlers  Blue Byte1994A strategy game with cartoony graphics and an innocent line in humour. At the start of the level you choose a starting point, the intention being to get lots of flat land as well as resources to mine and ideally existing sources of trees, stones and water (for fish). Your people are vying for supremacy with up to 3 others.

The gameplay focuses on resource management. Each building requires a certain amount of wood (and stones for some of them) to be constructed and requires particular resources to perform its function successfully. Food must be produced (either fish, bread (requiring a windmill, grain-farmer and baker) or pork (requiring a pig-farmer and butcher as well as the grain-farm) to feed the people working in mines to produce the iron, coal and gold (as well as additional stones).

Huts and Watch-Towers are built to expand your territory, sometimes at the expense of an enemy's land (clever play involves targeting an area where your opponent has a crucial building, thus compromising his production).

To finally win the level, you must defeat your opponents. Combat is fought one-at-a-time by the little soldiers and a victory results in all surrounding buildings being lost.

The game features 30 preset missions. 6 tutorials missions will help beginners to learn the game mechanics. The game also offers the possibility to play semi-randomly (based on a 16-number key) generated maps. The map size varies from small maps, for quick matches, to large maps to, depending on how much RAM is available, huge maps, for very long matches as the fact that the in-game statistics can be displayed on a 50-hour scale illustrates. These semi-random maps can be played in single-player mode but can also be played by 2 players on one system, if you have 2 mice, in which case the screen is vertically split.***

The Gene Machine Vic Tokai (Divide by Zero)1996The Gene Machine is a point-and-click 2D adventure game with background images that give the perspective of 3D.

The story begins in the 1880s in London. British gentleman Piers Featherstonehaugh (pronounced "fanshaw") and his faithful servant, Mossop, arrive back home to discover a talking cat on their doorstep. The cat tells them of an outlandish plot concerning genetic mutations gone haywire. It then becomes Fanshaw's goal to stop this ghastly activity and to catch the fiends behind it.

Players step into the shoes of Piers as he and Mossop travel around the globe... and beyond. He will meet many unusual characters and talk with them during his quest .. including talking animals as well as people.

Exploration is in 3rd person perspective and most puzzles involve the multitude of inventory items that can be found while exploring.***

The Bard's Quest: Dungeons of the Unknown  VisionSoft1994The Bards Quest I: The Legend of Isil Thania was a freely redistributable demo "shareware", that advertised parts 2 and 3 (registered/full versions). However, Legend of Isil Thania was nearly identical to The Star Light Festival which was the sample game that was included with The Bard's Tale Construction Set. This might have been a violation of the licensing agreement for the Construction Set (Interplay did nothing against the game regardless). Many fan complained of plagiarism.

The Bard's Lore: The Warrior & The Dragon ?1998The free full game can be downloaded, played and shared. The author sold real manuals, cluebooks, spellbook, and maps. Eventually the extra materials became free in digital downloads. The author declared "THE BARD'S LORE is now completely freeware, as of this date (Mars 2002)". However, he means pay-what-you-want a with $0 minimum and a $1 minimum if you choose to pay. "If you really like the game, you can of course deposit the former amount at $10 to my bank account. 1 dollar would be great but thanks to banking fees I cant go any lower.. =/
So if you feel up to it (i.e you liked the game enough to contribute to the maker)"
And his Swiss bank account information is in the documentation.

This used a patched version of The Bard's Tale Construction Set to provide variations and improvements on the original and allowed the author to create a unique adventure.

Star Trek - The Next Generation: A Final Unity  Spectrum Holobyte;MicroProse Software (Spectrum Holobyte)1995At last, a well-executed game based on the popular tv show follow-up to the original Star Trek show. The game doesn't waste any time: five minutes into gameplay, the player is confronted with a violation of Federation space, a group of alien defectors requesting political asylum, and a very large and pissed-off Romulan pursuit ship. This title's decent writing and Patrick Stewart's thespian baritone is excellent. In fact, the voice talent of the entire cast is here. Further, almost every aspect of the game: save-screens, astrogation, tactical combat, even the design of the manual is presented in a very attractive, straight-faced style consistent with nice Star Fleet Aesthetics. Players less interested in starship operations and more excited by living the lives of their favorite Star Trek characters may 'delegate' technical operations such as combat and power routing to crew members if they wish, but the hard-core, armchair starship commander can take full control - a very nice arrangement. In fact, if the game has a notable flaw, it may be that options are sometimes a little too open, and the player's range of choices a little too broad. Overall, this game offers an excellent extension of the feel of the show, and a solid game design as well. For its time, the production values are top notch. The film clips are impressive, and a "Holodeck" feature in the game allows you to watch cut scenes again and again to your heart's content. The graphics are well drawn, and all the main characters in ST:TNG are rendered in almost perfect fidelity with their real life counterparts. The voice acting stands out as one of the best voice tracks ever added to computer games. Ironically, the only real problem is that there is sometimes so much details in the background shots that, on occasions, it is difficult to pick out the hotspots.***

Roberta Williams' Mixed-Up Mother Goose Sierra On-Line1991A GAME YOUR CHILDREN WILL LOVE.
Bestselling authoress Roberta Williams is a master storyteller, famous for her fantasy adventure games. Now, Sierra combines her magic touch with the classic rhymes of Mother Goose to create her first adventure game for kids.
Mixed Up Mother Goose has been made so simple that even young children can play it when adults are out of the room. Once you get the program started, your child can take over because only a few keys are necessary.

CHOOSE THE CHARACTER THAT LOOKS LIKE YOUR CHILD!
Help your child pick from a variety of characters (male or female) to represent him or her in the game. Help them type their name to further personalize their character. Mother Goose can now use your child's name while talking to him or her throughout the adventure.

YOUR CHILD BECOMES A HERO BY HELPING MOTHER GOOSE!
Roberta Williams takes your child on an adventure in dreamland where he or she will help Mother Goose by finding missing pieces to some of her most popular rhymes. Find the missing sheep and take them back to Little Bo Peep. Help Little Miss Muffet find her Tuffet. Find the pail and return it to Jack and Jill. Your child will even go on a quest at the service of Old King Cole.
Once the rhyme has been corrected, it comes to life in brilliant color and splendid animation, and the rhyme is performed for your child by the onscreen characters. Each is accompanied by a charming musical score so your child can sing along.

FEATURES:
* Up to twelve children can save their game according to their name. Great for brothers and sisters or classroom groups.
* Easy-to-use menus make it simple to play, save the game, or select options such as joystick control.
* Includes a free color map of Mother Goose Land.
* Randomly located objects and characters allow your child to enjoy playing Mixed Up Mother Goose over and over again.

Nemesis: The Wizardry Adventure  Virgin Interactive (Sir-tech Software)1996Players control as an seemingly unremarkable peasant who was minding his own business when
the society of Nitherin Mages
sent a fowl beast in an attempted kidnapping. A good wizard completely deck-out for battle just happened to be watching over the peasant while standing in a tiny boat in a nearby water (hmmm), and foiled the kidnapping. The High Council knows of the group responsible but not the reason, nor why they have such a specific target. The unremarkable present is charged to investigate and stop them.

Individual item skill is gained by using said item. Spells can be learned. For battle, commands are selected and the player then clicked on the target. There is a great deal of talking to be done to complete the investigation. There are many puzzle to be solved. All done with the mouse or keyboard shortcuts.

Conceived as a complex real-time adventure game with dialog and combat but with contrastingly simplified interface that is still "more than click-click-click". It does not take place in the same Universe as the main Wizardry series and gameplay has nothing in common with the main Wizardry series (even critics who loved the game gave it poor ratings for calling it "Wizardry").***
