Ys I & II: Ancient Ys Vanished | Hudson Soft | 1989 | single player | [52]*** [37]***Ys Book I & II chronicles the first adventures of Adol Christin, a young, red-haired swordsman on a quest to unlock the secrets of an ancient kingdom. As Adol, you search the island of Esteria, gathering clues to unravel the mystery of Ys. Fight monsters that lurk in caves and towers with physical or magical attacks, and use your brain to make your way through dangerous areas filled with traps. In Ys Book I & II, the first titles in the Ys series were put together as a single TurboGrafx CD-ROM. They awed players with their gripping story lines accompanied by fully orchestrated soundtracks, wonderful voice acting and amazing special effects. Don't miss out on your chance to experience this wonderful piece of gaming history.***Hudson Soft licensed the first two Ys games from Falcom and put them on one single CD-ROM for their PC-Engine system. And they did a very good job. Opulent intro and end sequences, speech for important characters and beautiful CD-audio music. Together with [game=#158469]Tengai Makyou: Ziria[/game] the breakthrough for anime-style PC-Engine CD-ROM games. Add a decent story and nice gameplay and you have a great game. Ys complexity doesn't lie in its controls, which are very simple. You only have to run into enemies to kill them (or they kill you depending on your equipment and stats). The difficulty results in the sometimes very confusing layout of the numerous dungeons (shrines, towers, mines etc.). Without a good map you will get hopelessly lost. Ys 1 and Ys 2 play very similar. The only difference is that you have some magical abilities available in Ys 2. Since both games represent one big storyline, you have to play through Ys 1 to automatically continue with Ys 2. | PC Engine CD | labelimagesubject |

Ys Origin | Nihon Falcom;XSEED (Nihon Falcom) | 2006 | single player | 700 years before the events of Ys I & II, the land of Ys was on the brink of destruction. Demons came in droves and forced the twin Goddesses who ruled the land to whisk their subjects away from the surface, into the safe embrace of the clouds. The demons were persistent, however, erecting a massive tower in pursuit. The battle that raged upon the ground had begun ascending for a second round up above. One day, amidst this turmoil, the Goddesses stole away into the night, vanishing from Ys altogether. And there's only one place they could have gone: the Devil's Tower. A search party of knights and sorcerers was hastily formed and dispatched to the surface in hopes of retrieving these runaway deities. Among its members were apprentice knight Yunica Tovah and troubled sorcerer Hugo Fact. This is their story. Or at least, it's how each of them remembers it. Expanding upon the gameplay elements introduced in Ys: The Ark of Napishtim and further developed in Ys: The Oath in Felghana, Ys Origin perfects the formula by adding different styles of play and new features never before seen in the Ys universe. Best described as an arcade-like platformer RPG with Metroidvania elements and a complex, multi-faceted narrative, Ys Origin is the perfect mix of action, exploration and story. Screen-filling bosses with complex AI, unique platforming elements, innovative puzzles and a deeply involving mystery await within the wildly varied confines of this classic Ys dungeon. Come see how long you can last in the Devil's Tower... Key Features: * Officially available in English for the very first time. * Three unique playable characters in story mode, with additional variations (and characters?) unlockable through other modes. * Five difficulty levels ranging from "Very Easy" for casual players to "Nightmare" for true Ys masters. * Unlockable "Time Attack" and "Boss Rush" modes for anyone looking to show off his/her boss-taming abilities. * Unlockable Arena Mode pits players against massive hordes of enemies for unique gameplay rewards. * Over 40 unique Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud support and hundreds of highly competitive leaderboards. * Minutely configurable high-resolution graphics with true widescreen support. * Fully adjustable controls supporting virtually any USB gamepad, as well as a standard keyboard and mouse setup.***Steam/English release was on 2012-05-31***Prequel to the whole Ys series and the second game that doesn't revolve around Adol Christin (first was Ys Strategy), set some 700 years before the events of Ancient Ys Vanished (Ys 1&2). The chosen character affects the story some, but the played areas and such are the same. Encountered NPCs, including bosses, are not always the same and the dialogue tends to be different even if following the same lines. Some items are found in different places too. | Windows | labelimagesubject |
Ys Seven | Falcom;Xseed Games (Falcom) | 2009 | single player | The kingdom of Altago is rebuilding their kingdom around a newfound peace after years of war against the merciless armies of Romn. The classic adventuresome duo, Adol and Dogi, arrive in the harbor of Altago City, and quickly find themselves in a scuffle with the Dragon Knights, the kingdom's military police body, when attempting to save a local girl from harassment by one of their commanding officers. Upset by the interruption and subsequent humiliation, the commander arrests Adol and Dogi, charging them with espionage. The king of Altago, having known of the duo's pending arrival from an old trusted friend, quickly releases the pair from prison and summons them to his chambers. He tells the men about an ancient shrine that was uncovered after a recent earthquake, and asks for their help in investigating this mysterious new find. Adol and Dogi oblige, unaware that they are about to take the first steps on a long journey to save all of Altago from long-forgotten ancient forces, and to reunite the estranged five tribes who serve and protect the Five Great Dragons – deified beings who may well be the world's last hope. Ys SEVEN is the latest installment in the long-running Ys series which first debuted on PC in 1987. This is the first iteration to be built specifically for the PSP system, taking full advantage of the widescreen format and hardware. The battle system consists of a three-member battle party with enemies engaged on the field map in real-time for fast-paced combat. Old fans of the series and new players alike will be immersed into the rich vibrant world containing over 30 hours of gameplay.*** [100]*** [12] | PSP | labelimagesubject |
