Sopwith | BMB Compuscience Canada | ? | This is an updated version of the 1980's game developed by David L. Clark of BMB Compuscience Canada. It has been adapted to run under *nix using the SDL toolkit. Poor graphics, stupid AI, and horrible sound await you. The gameplay is simple, addictive, and fun. A `side-scroller', you pilot your biplane across a static field, destorying enemy encampments and planes. | labelimagesubject |

Kingpin: Life of Crime | Xatrix Entertainment (Xatrix Entertainment;Gray Matter Studios;icculus) | 1999 | This was a proprietary game. The source code was later released under the GPL license but the content remain proprietary. The initial port to Linux is credited to Xatrix Entertainment (even though Ridah worked for Gray Matter Studios which worked for Xatrix Entertainment) but the later GPLed port is credited to icculus. Alien Swarm | Black Cat Games | 2004 | Works on any platform UT2k4 was ported to. | labelminimizeminimize |
DRL | author | 2005 | "Doom" is not a word in the Webster's dictionary anymore. It is in fact owned by Zenimax who sued Webster's and the people behind DoomRL for using the word. Which is why it is "DRL" now. Zenimax took this action seemingly because one of the developers of DoomRL created an unrelated roguelike called "Jupiter Hell" and solicited investors on Kickstarter. And Webster's because they sell dictionaries.***Latest version: 0.9.9.1 (as of 2010-03-24) | labelimageminimize |

Zero Ballistics | QuantiCode | 2008 | Zero Ballistics is a type of first-person-shooter played with tanks. Choose your weapons, shoot opponents. This is a multiplayer experience with optional bots. It also has 3rd person and other views not conducive to hitting targets.*** | labelimagesubject |
Descent | author (Parallax Software;author) | 2010 | In the year 2012 the Post Terran Mining Company (PTMC) has used save labor to create automated mines on 15 planets and moons of the solar system. The mistreated slaves have rebelled, killed their masters, and claimed the mines as their homes. PTMC hires you to invade these newly claimed homes and perpetrate genocide. Shoot the robot monsters!***This was a commercially available proprietary game. The source code was later released under the GPL (and proprietary and Public Domain, in other words a proprietary license) but the content remains definitively proprietary. Mines throughout the solar system have been taken over by the robots built to mine them. Humans have been killed or imprisoned in the mines. It seems to be caused by some sort of computer virus. The owning company has hired a mercenary to rescue the surviving prisoners and destroy the main reactor in each mine, thus destroying the infected robots. Shoot the robots, get power ups, find the keys, find the reactor, rescue the humans, destroy the reactor, escape the exploding mine. Any commercial version of Descent can be played on Linux using either the D1X, D2X, DXX-Rebirth, or D2X-XL engines. Yes, That includes the [game=&ftag=descent&fplat=3]PlayStation version[/game]. These are all considered source-ports. All aspects except for movies from the Mac version are preserved. The graphics are enhanced through OpenGL, any resolution, and proper widescreen options. D2X-XL also adds modes, difficulty levels, multiplayer options, graphics effects, faster or slower options, weapons enhancements, massive level design improvements (multiple boss robots can work as a team, robots can carry keys and switches), and an extensive help menu.

The source code license can be read here. It is a fully proprietary license that permits anything except commercial use. The media headline "released Descent's source code (version 1.5) to the public domain for noncommercial purposes." Is totally $#!@&%, as "public domain" prohibits having any restrictions, including non-commercial. The original media remains fully proprietary as well. [Zerothis] | labelimagesubject |

Cortex Command | Data Realms | 2012 | Was only available as part of the 2011 Humble Indie Bundle?***In the world of Cortex Command, many humans have opted to amputate their entire natural bodies in order to prolong their lives and enable interstellar space travel. Their disembodied brains are hardly helpless, however, as they can remotely control all kinds of machines and craft through artificial interfaces. Playing as one of these people's brains, you can quickly switch control between many different expendable bodies in order to complete otherwise dangerous tasks - all from the physical safety of your command bunker. Use these technological powers of telepathy to collect gold out of the fully destructible terrain, then purchase even more bodies and materiel with those newly acquired funds! You can even program the crude A.I.s of your puppet army to complete simple tasks (patrolling, digging, etc.) while your attention and direct control is somewhere else. Use your accumulated forces to protect your brain, explore the world, and defeat your competition! Story Summary ---------------------------------------- Cortex Command is set a few hundred years into the future, where the now cybernetic human race is able to travel between stars and has already met several alien civilizations. Interstellar trade and prosperity reigns, but there is always an ever-expanding frontier to explore and exploit for precious resources. In this gold rush of galactic proportions, fantastic adventure and brutal competition awaits. You play as the boss of a small gold mining company that has just arrived at a newly discovered Earth-like planet. The large space ship that brought you here along with many other adventurers is called a TradeStar. It acts as a massive orbital safe haven and marketplace for the fortune seekers who venture down onto the planet's surface. Your purchases of bodies, guns, and equipment are sent from the TradeStar orbiting above and delivered to you by your choice of landing craft. However, it soon becomes clear that the planet isn't as pristine as initially thought, and you will have to quickly adapt from your humble beginnings in order to survive and ultimately discover the dangerous secrets of this alien world... Key Features ---------------------------------------- Fully destructible environments - The gold you need to excavate is sprinkled throughout the terrain of each scene. Use special digging tools to blast your way into the dirt and debris. All the pieces of bodies and ships from your struggles will fall to the ground and permanently add to the battlefield. Get more powerful (and expensive) diggers and you can even tunnel into your enemies' bunkers from below! In-game buying menu - At any time and place during the game, bring up a powerful menu to order new bodies and equipment, all delivered at the location and by the transport ship of your choosing. Rockets are cheaper but unreliable and harder to land. Drop ships are far more expensive but can quickly deploy entire groups of puppets onto difficult terrain. Ships and equipment returned to the TradeStar are refunded to your account. Build your own bunker - At the start of most missions, you are able to take your time and build your own command bunker from scratch. Easily design twisting tunnels and place doors, traps, and turrets to thwart your enemies' intrusions! Pre-deploy and equip bodies in and around your installation to prepare yourself for your objectives. Don't spend too much though, or you won't have enough funds left when the mission starts! Four-player cooperative and/or versus multiplayer - Gather your friends and plug in those game controllers! Play skirmish or campaign missions with or against up to three of your buddies. 2 vs 2, 1 vs. 3, 4 vs. the CPU - it's up to you! (rhyme intended). Flexible control settings allow you to use the keyboard, keyboard + mouse, or any generic game controller you can find and plug in. Built-in editors and modding - Several in-game editors allow you to easily create your own stuff. The game's engine is built to make it very simple to modify and add your own content. Design your own missions, guys, ships, weapons, tools, bombs, and shields - and easily share them with your friends. Join and download some fantastic mods from the community at the Data Realms Fan Forums. | labelimagesubject |
