Unlucky Seven  Asylum CreaturesTBAA game made to honor both the sci-fi and jPRG genres. Six prisoners and an android are offered freedom in exchange for their services as deep space explorers about a mysterious spacecraft. This game rewards both good and evil behavior.

As of 2023, this game is still in development. In fact, this retro 2D game has been in development for so long that they've apparently switched to retro 3D textured polygons.

The working titles of this game were (Un)Lucky7 and (Unlucky 7)

Bitfighter author2007The Linux versions are released only in source code format on the game website. Select Linux distros also have binary releases available in their repositories.***Latest version: 017b (as of 2012-05-09)

Version history:
* 015a (2011-04-18)
* 011b (2009-12-18)

The game has seemingly no notable plans for what they're doing besides bug fixing and adding minor features (most/all of them not really gameplay related), so I've opted to mark this game as no longer in development (FOSS games tend to make that statement a bit strange).

Endless Sky author2015The game simply refers to the player's character as a captain of a spaceship and nothing in the game refers to the gender of the player's captain. Other captains/npcs in the game are identified as male or female, lending further credibility that the the player's Captain does have a gender, and that the player is free to decide what it is. labelminimizeminimize

GalaxyHack author2004GalaxyHack allows you to design a fleet of spaceships which can then be tested in AI script based battles against fleets designed by other players. Though battles take place in real time, the strategy comes before hand, both in writing short AI scripts in a simple scripting language, and also in the set up and selection of your fleet. You don't actually have any control over your units at all mid-battle, but rather use the time to see where the set up of your fleets is working, where your fleets' weaknesses lie and changes are needed, and perhaps also to learn from the strategy of your opponent.

The game revolves around very large capital ships, from which smaller ships are launched. To win a battle you must destroy of all of your opponent's capital ships before they destroy yours.

There can be hundreds of units in any one battle, but there is no harvesting, resource management or base building.

GNOME War Pad author2004A Linux Client for "VGA Planets".

The author discontinued work on the client in 2006 saying he would move the source to a Subversion repository. This was not done. The client and source code are under the GPL license so where ever copies exists anyone can do what they want with them. That said, it is a rather difficult game to find out there on the Internet.

It is available in Debian and Ubuntu Hardy, Intrepid, Jaunty, Karmic, Lucid, and Maverick repositories. It was last 'supported' in Ubuntu Lucid. No artificial barriers prevent its compilation or installation on any Linux distro.

GRIKARUGUN  author2007A manic shooter done with the Zelda Classic engine. Five levels of bullet hell. 7 bosses to defeat. 8-directional movement and 8 buttons (and 9 actions). Each enemy and projectile has a color scheme, destroy sets to multiply scoring. Projectiles of the same color as the player's ship will do no damage. The player can also shoot themselves if they do it right. labelimagesubject
HighMoon author2005HighMoon is a game similar to "Artillery" or "Worms" -- but it takes place in the universe. There is a planet system between two flying saucers. The gravitational fields of the planets and moons change inevitably each ballistic curve. It is not easy to eliminate an enemy. If you miss it, the shoots can change their direction and become dangerous to the attacker.
HighMoon can be played against a computer or a human opponent in many planet systems.
HighMoon ist licensed under the GNU General Public Licence

kasteroids author1997This asteroids variant includes space brakes, shields, fuel, and you can upgrade the maximum number of shots on screen.

Shoot the rocks into little rock and those into little rocks. The smallest rock sometimes contain power-ups. Use shields, fuel, and brakes strategically. Once all the asteroids are destroyed, do it again. Don't run out of lives. The screen wraps around for all objects.***The objective of kasteroids is to destroy all the asteroids on the
screen to advance to the next level. Your ship is destroyed if it
makes contact with an asteroid.

Netrek author1988Netrek is an Internet game for up to 16 players, written almost entirely in cross-platform open-source software. It combines features of multi-directional shooters and team-based real-time strategy games. Players attempt to disable or destroy their opponents' ships in real-time combat, while taking over enemy planets by bombing them and dropping off armies they pick up on friendly planets. The goal of the game is to capture all the opposing team's planets.

Developed as a successor to 1986's Xtrek, Netrek was first played in 1988. It was the third Internet game, the first Internet team game, and as of 2022 is the oldest Internet game still actively played. It pioneered many technologies used in later games and has been cited as prior art in patent disputes. Xtrek and Netrek are the oldest games of what is now called the MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) genre.
