Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller Take 2 Interactive (Gametek)1994The first game from Take 2 is a fun cyberpunk-meets-Inferno romp with an interesting plot: in the future where Hell is proven to exist and demons have real jobs, you play a police couple Gideon and Rachel who inexplicably become wanted criminals overnight. You must find out why you've been betrayed, and by whom. Dennis Hopper's voice is the only high-point of voice acting in this game, and most dialogues go on forever. Still, the game is recommended for some good (tough) puzzles and truly epic length, with multiple solutions and optional sub-plots. It uses a simple point-and-click interface. You advance in the game by talking to people and manipulating objects to solve puzzles. The game utilizes pre-rendered backgrounds and FMV sequences as cut-scenes.***

King's Quest VII: The Princeless Bride  Sierra On-Line1994Princess Rosella is somewhat rebellious, and dreams of adventure rather than marriage. She catches a glimpse of a something magical in a pond, and dives in. Her mother, Queen Valanice follows. Valanice lands in a desert in the land of Eldritch, while Rosella finds herself transformed into a troll and engaged to be married to the King of the Trolls. As the two characters attempt to find each other, they discover that all of Eldritch is in danger. The evil sorceress Malicia has attacked or imprisoned the leaders of the different kingdoms of Eldritch, and plots to destroy the land. The action is separated into six chapters, each set primarily in a different region of Eldritch. The player alternates between Valanice and Rosella with each chapter. The two heroines travel through some of the same places during the course of the game, finally meeting up again in the end. The game also uses a smart pointer which lights up when passed over an object that can be used. Players can get or use objects and talk to characters by simply clicking on them. It featured high-resolution graphics in a style reminiscent of Disney animated films. It is also the only King's Quest game with multiple protagonists, and the only one to divide the story into "chapters." It's also the only game in the King's Quest series to feature Queen Valanice in a major role, and also the only one in which King Graham is not shown or mentioned at all.***

Return to Ringworld Tsunami Media1994This is a sequel to the previous Ringworld game based on Larry Niven's "Known Space" series of novels. Once again this game is a point and click adventure/puzzle solving game. After saving the puppeteer race from extermination and uncovering some powerful ancient technology on the first game, Quinn, Seeker of Vengeance and Miranda Rees find themselves searches as fugitives by all three major species, so they go to Ringworld to hide. Once in Ringworld they'll try to uncover some evidence to clear their names, but they stumble across another universe-threatening plot. This time U.N. general Carson Teal is out to rule the universe by uncovering Ringworld's secrets, and you must stop him. This game is way, WAY bigger than it's predecessor, with hundreds of screens, mazes, etc. Plus you get to play as all three characters throughout the game, a la Day of the Tentacle. It's available in both floppy and cd versions (which adds full speech).***

Star Trek - The Next Generation: A Final Unity  Spectrum Holobyte;MicroProse Software (Spectrum Holobyte)1995At last, a well-executed game based on the popular tv show follow-up to the original Star Trek show. The game doesn't waste any time: five minutes into gameplay, the player is confronted with a violation of Federation space, a group of alien defectors requesting political asylum, and a very large and pissed-off Romulan pursuit ship. This title's decent writing and Patrick Stewart's thespian baritone is excellent. In fact, the voice talent of the entire cast is here. Further, almost every aspect of the game: save-screens, astrogation, tactical combat, even the design of the manual is presented in a very attractive, straight-faced style consistent with nice Star Fleet Aesthetics. Players less interested in starship operations and more excited by living the lives of their favorite Star Trek characters may 'delegate' technical operations such as combat and power routing to crew members if they wish, but the hard-core, armchair starship commander can take full control - a very nice arrangement. In fact, if the game has a notable flaw, it may be that options are sometimes a little too open, and the player's range of choices a little too broad. Overall, this game offers an excellent extension of the feel of the show, and a solid game design as well. For its time, the production values are top notch. The film clips are impressive, and a "Holodeck" feature in the game allows you to watch cut scenes again and again to your heart's content. The graphics are well drawn, and all the main characters in ST:TNG are rendered in almost perfect fidelity with their real life counterparts. The voice acting stands out as one of the best voice tracks ever added to computer games. Ironically, the only real problem is that there is sometimes so much details in the background shots that, on occasions, it is difficult to pick out the hotspots.***

Down in the Dumps Philips (Haiku Studios)1996Down in the Dumps is a graphical adventure game in which the player takes control of the family Blub. In each chapter the player controls a different family member. The family of minuscule aliens wanted to go on holidays to another planet, but after a crash with evil aliens, they crash-land in a dump on earth. It is up to the player to take control of the family members and collect the required parts to reconstruct their spaceship.

The game is played with the mouse in typical point & click adventure style. You can collect in an inventory and combine items with each other or use them with objects in the game world. The game makes use of prerendered backgrounds and characters. The entire game takes place on the dump and is in a comedic style.***

Mutation of J.B.  TopWare Interactive;LK Avalon (Invention)1996You control a young boy called Johnny Burger who plans to visit his cousin Emanuel for two weeks. As he arrives he finds him gone. A scientist, who's also looking for Johnny's cousin, comes by and offers Johnny 500DM (Deutsche Mark) for an experiment. Of course, the experiment goes awry. During the procedure a mysterious guy flashes the scientist's memory. The emerging irritation causes the professor to start pushing random buttons, which results in Johnny's transformation as a human pig. After Johnny wakes up the professor is gone, too, as he was kidnapped to the Planet Ladea.

So, Johnny's quest comprises of finding the professor to be transformed back into a normal state and finding out what happened to Emanuel.***

The Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes: The Case of the Rose Tattoo  Electronic Arts (Mythos Software)1996In October of 1889, the formula for a new and extraordinarily powerful explosive disappeared from the Ministry of Defense. Sherlock's brother Mycroft, an eccentric but influential government servant, launched an official though secret inquiry into the theft, but his effort was thwarted. Just before asking Sherlock to undertake an independent investigation of the theft, Mycroft was seriously injured in an explosion that leveled the Diogenes Club. Sherlock, believing his brother had been victimized by a random gas leak, retired disconsolate to 221B Baker St. Dr. Watson, with a little luck and much effort, managed to reanimate his friend by posing one critical question: "What if the explosion that injured Mycroft had not been an accident?" The answer to this query sent Holmes down a long and twisted road of discovery. Sherlock, for the first time in his career, acknowledged that his motivation was something other than a desire for justice. With single-minded ferocity he pursued, cajoled, questioned, and confronted suspects from smug Mayfair to the pitiful and dangerous East End. Gradually, through observation and deduction, he developed a picture of a huge criminal enterprise initiated by a masterful adversary. To penetrate this perilous conspiracy and frustrate its intent he solved several capital crimes. Holmes applied his customary courage, acumen, and intelligence to these daunting tasks. In so doing he quashed a potentially volatile international incident, defended the national security, protected the honor of the royal family, exonerated the innocent and delivered rough and swift punishment to the guilty. The shocking and surprising resolution of the case made it necessary to seal Watson's precious account for 100 years. That is how The Case of the Rose Tattoo became one of the Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes.
