The Romantic Blue Crystalvision (WRF Studios)1994Set in a remote 19th century village, The Romantic Blue is a love story and adventure game with a horror theme. It seems the town of ShadowCrest is under the spell of the Evil Sisterhood and its High Priestess Morella. Surrounded by ever-growing graveyards and engulfed in darkness, ShadowCrest's young girls are bound to serve the High Priestess upon their 18th birthday. All others are captured and enslaved by the order against their will and exist in a zombie-like state. Despite the fact that love and marriage are forbidden, Miranda, one of the young girls of ShadowCrest, has fallen in love with Jack, who is one of the captives. Her despair grows each night as she listens to him play the piano in the distance. She vows to free him from the clutches of the Evil Sisterhood, but she cannot do this on her own. Having learned dark magic from the gypsies, she summons you to help her. You must search the dark tunnels, foreboding passageways and eerie crypts to find the tools needed to free Jack. At the magic shop or blacksmith's barn, purchase potions or a weapon with money you find while exploring. Dispel ghastly creatures which block your path. Find many keys to unlock new areas and doors, and solve various other types of puzzles. Even though the use of weapons is sometimes necessary, the game has no action sequences of any kind. Flashback cutscenes bring the story of misery and terror to life. Spooky background music and creepy sound effects are included to increase the tension and suspense. Word commands are used as part of the interface. Several plastic spiders, a map and several walkthroughs are included in the package. labelimagesubject
Darkseed  Cyberdreams1992Dark Seed is an adventure game which capitalizes on the drawings of famous horror designer H. R. Giger as a source of background artwork and inspiration.

You play Mike Dawson, an ad company manager who, in pursuit of his goal in life to become a writer, purchases a solitary mansion in a small town called Woodland Hills. Although the low cost and hush-hush transactions when purchasing the house do raise your suspicion, the solitary environment and sheer beauty of the house crush common sense and you decide to buy the house. That's when trouble begin. Upon reaching the house, you suddenly feel tired. You find a bed and fall asleep...

... and wake up from a terrible dream, only to find out that your life has just become a worse nightmare: an unknown source has implanted a seed of darkness in your mind, and you only have three days to find a way to stop it.***French version.

Darkseed II  Cyberdreams (Destiny Media Technologies)1995Dark Seed II continues the nightmare of Mike Dawson as he recovers from a nervous breakdown from his earlier encounters with the Ancients. Back in his hometown, Mike's high school sweetheart, Rita, is found murdered after the high school reunion. Unfortunately, Mike cannot remember much about that night, even though others saw him with Rita. Now, as the prime suspect, he must find a way to prove his innocence.

The designs of H.R. Giger are pivotal in this horror-tinged point 'n click adventure. Players will be swapping between the Normal World and the Dark World, with 75 prerendered 3D locations in total. There are 40 characters to interact with. The goal is to overthrow the Behemoth of the Dark World and cut through the corruption of the Normal World.

Movement, action and dialogue interaction modes are toggled between using the right mouse button, with the full screen used for location display unless the game menu or inventory bars are called into use.

Orion Burger Eidos (Sanctuary Woods)1996The intergalactic fast-food chain Orion Burger uses the services of an alien meat-supplier named Zlarg, who only cares for money and doesn't have much in a way of conscience. So his next genius plan is to use the inhabitants of the planet Earth, known as "humans", as a raw, protein-rich material for the tasty burgers. However, interstellar law forbids using sentient creatures as meat. Every raw ingredient has to pass specific tests for sentience. Zlarg knows it, and he rigs the tests in such a way that no creature can pass it. Enter Wilbur Wafflemeier, an ordinary guy who is about to be grilled... in more than one way. Somehow, the unlikely hero has to find a way to pass the tests...

Orion Burger is a traditional puzzle-solving adventure with cartoon-like 2D graphics. It uses verb commands "Take", "Use", and "Talk" for interaction with the environment. The game consists of five tests, each of them requiring Wilbur to explore his home town, talk to people, gather inventory items, and solve tricky puzzles in order to succeed and qualify as a sentient being.***

Noctropolis Electronic Arts (Flashpoint Productions)1994Noctropolis is an adventure game, with game mechanics that will be familiar to anyone who has ever played point and click adventure games. You play the part of a character in a piece of "interactive fiction," and it's up to you to solve the puzzles and overcome the obstacles your character will have to face throughout the game. When you begin Noctropolis, you're just some guy who owns a bookstore. You also happen to be a huge fan of the "Darksheer" comic book series. Darksheer is a Batman-esque superhero (i.e. he doesn't have any actual super powers) and, with his partner Stiletto (a former supervillain converted to the side of the good guys) he is the sworn protector of Noctropolis. And Noctropolis is a city where it's always nighttime, thanks to a permanent ash cloud that hangs over the city (the result of some volcanic environmental catastrophe which occurred decades before the timeline of the story). So one night, as you're leafing through the newest issue of "Darksheer" to hit the stands, a courier brings you a package which, to make a long story short, eventually transports you into the city of Noctropolis as...you guessed it...Darksheer. Coincidentally enough, your arrival as Darksheer occurs at the same time that five of Darksheer's deadliest arch-villains decide to gang up on him after they're mysteriously released from incarceration. It turns out that the real Darksheer had disappeared several weeks prior to your arrival. Nobody knows why, not even Stiletto. But now he's back! Only he's not, 'cause you're him and you have no clue what's going on. It's up to you to find out who released your enemies while simultaneously trying to keep the newly freed criminals from wreaking havoc across the city of Noctropolis. And maybe, in the process, find a way back to the real world...***1995 French version.

Dreamweb Empire;GameTek (Creative Reality)1994Dreamweb is a dark, brooding game set in a dystopian near-future. You play Ryan, a bartender who is plagued by nightmares in this cyberpunk inspired adventure game. These nightmares eminate from the dreamweb, which affects the plane of your subconscious. The web has been corrupted by the presence of seven controlling figures and your job is to kill them, cleanse the web and save the world from madness. Considerable attention is paid to the game's atmosphere, but the value of a strong narrative is overlooked. The dialogue is functional rather than enjoyable. Puzzles have logical solutions, but the fact that you can pick up almost everything makes the solutions obscure at times. A prime example of style over content, but definitely worth a look for its gripping plot and very atmospheric gameplay. There's also a controversial and one of the earliest uncensored sex scenes in a mainstream PC game.***CD-ROM version.

[22]******This game was banned for supposed "sexualised violence" in Australia. As a matter of fact, the screen shot shown here is from the offending scene. The player controlled character is about to off the guy there who happens to be in bed with his girl at the time. The game is definitely not intended for kids and contains both sex and violence. But any "sexualised violence" exists in the imagination of the base minded people who lack the education to know "sexualised" is not even a real word. Videogame designers take note: You can kill all the videogame characters you want, before they have sex, but never after.

Ken's Labyrinth Epic Megagames1993Ken Silverman's debut was published when he was only 17 years old. He got famous with the several times licensed "Build" engine, seen first in Duke Nukem 3D. In Ken's Labyrinth, you have to rescue your dog and the world along the way. The graphics remind one of the Wolfenstein engine, but the monsters are drawn worse. Generally, the game doesn't bubble over with ideas, that can be seen already in the title. ;-) In November 1999, the full version was released as freeware***Released as freeware in 1999 and the source code was released in 2001.

Lethal Tender Froggman (Pie in the Sky Software)1993Lethal Tender's graphics are similar to those of Wolfenstein 3D. Bad boy Nick Hunter must thwart the evil Thorne Devereaux's plan to coat U.S. currency with a time delayed explosive by infiltrating his base and mowing down swarms of identical nameless guards. Shoot guards, collect colored keys to open doors, pick up more powerful weapons — you know the drill. The game does set itself apart from other shareware FPS with the addition of inventory screen, some inventive level design, and some semblance of plot development. labelimagesubject

Corridor 7: Alien Invasion Gametek;Intracorp Entertainment (Capstone Software)1994In this game, which uses the Wolfenstein 3D engine, you hunt aliens on various spaceships. In the year 2012, it was finally possible to send a space ship to Mars. The scientists returned with a small object of unknown origin, which was supposed to be a proof for the existence of life on Mars. The object was placed in a special research facility, in the deepest place known as "Corridor 7". Exposed to gamma radiation, the mysterious object caused a portal to appear, which connected two worlds. Alien invasion began. It's time for you, a brave special agent, to descend into Corridor 7 where the fate of humanity must be decided. Transparent glass, a motion tracker and enemies that seem to morph from harmless adverseries break up the traditional shooting. Also included are some view-enhancers (infrared,...). It's not the best shooter, but it offers a solid entertaining game. The CD edition released in 1995 included a number of extra levels in addition to the disk version as well as full support for multiplayer over IPX, new weapons and Redbook CD-Audio.***Requires 2Mo RAM***

Adult Film Cameraman Interactive Girls Club1994A program coming across as somewhat nonsensical in absence of a certain context, this piece of software puts its operator in the position of the cameraman of an adult film. What this amounts to is viewing one of three softcore pornographic colour still images through a small (viewfinder) window, panning across the image with mouse movements and zooming in or out with the buttons. The player can press R to record so that later on, the game can reproduce the particular combination of camera moves (or: their "adult film") for the enjoyment of the viewer. labelimagesubject

Star Trek: Judgment Rites Interplay1993Sequel to the award-winning Star Trek: 25th Anniversary, Judgment Rites brings back the entire Enterprise crew in 8 all new episodes. Strange things are happening in distant space, such as dead planets spawning life and WW1 planes in outer space. You need to survive these situations. You must navigate your way through space, and send away teams onto planets to investigate situations, communicate with other characters and solve puzzles. Unlike the previous game, action sequences are optional. It's an even better and longer sequel to 25th Anniversary. Although gameplay remains the same (after all, it's a prudent "don't fix it if it ain't broke" philosophy), the plot this time is more complex and puzzles more difficult, which means that "optimal" solution is less obvious. Unfortunately, frustrating combat is also back, and dialogues are tedious at times. It's still a great game, however, and worthy of every adventurer's collection.***

Trick or Treat Junkyard;Merit Studios (ACA Soft)1994Trick or Treat is one of those obscure adventure games, which are hard to find nowadays. It's a true graphical point & click extravaganza from a Spanish developer that puts you in the shoes of an out of job young guy who has recently got another job as a Care Assistant at an Elder Home Care Center in Devilsville. You start your job on 31st of October and no sooner you reach the Care Center your car got stolen by the former Care Assistant. You enter the home and introduce yourself to all the old people and they all order you to get them various items for a Halloween party they are organizing tonight. Finding these items is the first part of your quest. The conversations you can have with various care home residents are quite funny, although there are some awkward sentences and only a few people to talk to. The game is a bit too short, thus making it ideal for adventure game beginners. labelimagesubject
