River Raid Activision1984The player must maneuver their jet plane up the river just inches from the surface of the water. So low that the plane can collide with the banks of the river or canyon walls in some places. The goal is to shoot all enemy ships, helicopters, bridges, planes, and fuel tanks and do not collide with them. Also, fuel can be stolen from the tanks by flying over them, this is necessary to keep the player's jet flying.

While the game does not have a proper ending, there is an obvious point where there is no more to be seen.
The river is an endless loop and decent players will be able to advance far enough to see the section of river they started at, perhaps even multiple times. The 'end' of the loop is a climatic as it is the most difficult section of the river.
Requires a cartridge port and PCjr or Tandy 1000 (8088 or 8086 CPU, 64 KB RAM. Optional Tandy/PCjr Sound Card, Optional Tandy/PCjr Analog Joystick.

Gunship MicroProse1986Gunship depicts one of the Western world's finest attack helicopters: The AH-64A Apache. This simulation recreates the weapons, flight systems, and performance of the real machine. The player controls an arsenal that includes laser-guided Hellfire missiles, a 30mm cannon controlled by helmet gunsights, clusters of bombardment rockets--even air-to-air missiles for duels with enemy helicopters. The game starts with flight training at a base in the United States. Tutorials teach the player to handle the copter; once the controls and flying skills are mastered, there are escalating challenges and hundreds of missions in any one of four regions of the world, including Southeast Asia, Central America, the Middle East, and the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact allies in Western Europe.***

Gunship 2000  Microprose1991Take the Apache, the new Longbow Apache, The Blackhawk, Comanche Scout, Comanche Gunship, or the MD-500 Defender on campaigns or missions. Updated graphics engine has much more detailed terrain variation with true valleys/hills and even train tunnels that you can fly through. When you are promoted to a sufficient rank you can take along multiple helicopters to accomplish your objectives. The dynamic campaign generates new missions based on multiple maps. Attack, defend, sweep, scout, rescue, drop...
Lots of missions to keep you busy. Crew learn and grow in experience as they survive and succeed. A full mission recorder allows you to view EVERY member of your team as they fight or die. Plenty of weapons are available for your side from the latest Hellfire missiles and Sidearm anti-radar missiles to the old fashioned chain gun and gun pods are available for your use.
The enemy can be well armed as well, from deadly 2S6 gun/missile combo to old-fashion ZSU-23, even the occasional MiGs.***

Comanche: Maximum Overkill Novalogic1992They also released two Mission-Disks titled "Global Challenge" and "Over the Edge", as well as a special CD-ROM version which included the two mission-disks and some extra missions.***I remember the first time I saw and played this. I thought WOW! The graphics were breathtaking for its time because "Comanche" introduced voxel-space instead of your standard (mostly non-textured at that time) vector graphics. Flying through canyons with full speed was an unbelievable satisfying feeling. The game is more an action game instead of a real simulation. Simulation fans might be dissappointed because its too simple, but I think it suited the game to be rather simple.

Extreme Assault Blue Byte1997You're at the controls of a powerful 21st century attack helicopter. Cruising just above the tree tops, you see a military convoy down below. Maneuvering into position, you start blasting away with your laser cannon. Suddenly the aircraft is rocked by hostile fire from a lethal enemy helicopter!

Jamming the throttle forward you make a quick 180 and get your butt out of there. He gives chase, but with a few hot moves you shake him. You pull a 6g turn and go after him for some major pay-back. Firing one of the radar guided missiles, you blow the wimp into a thousand pieces!

You then spot an entrance into a mountain cave and charge right in. Flying through a network of underground tunnels, you fight-off swarms of vicious attackers. Landing at an industrial complex, you jump into your state of the art, heavily armed tank and start pulverizing everything in sight.

Your destructive efforts are cut short when rounds start slamming into your vehicle. Spinning around, you pound the offending tanks until they're history. Out of the corner of your eye, you catch a glimpse of a large strange vehicle just before it disappears into the darkness. Your heart racing, your hands sweating, you start down the corridor not knowing who or what waits around the next corner!

If you are looking for a good adrenaline rush, then you're sure to enjoy this intense action game from Blue Byte. Aliens have secretly set up operations on Earth and it's up to you to put a stop to their sinister plans. Blow `em away with your Sioux AH-23, a high tech attack helicopter, and the T1, the next generation battle tank.

Almost 20 different types of tenacious and cunning opponents will be gunning for you from the air and the ground. Increase your killing power and strengthen your defenses with bonuses found in secret passages and hidden rooms.

Experience awesome real time 3-D graphics as you journey through mountain ravines, subterranean caves, Inca ruins and underground alien complexes. This breathtaking, lifelike world will unfold before you smoothly and quickly, thanks to a highly advanced 3-D graphics engine that does not require any accelerator cards.

Aggressive game play and quick reflexes are required for the short, fast-paced missions. Simple controls means there's no time wasted learning complicated systems. Right from the start you'll be immersed in an intense, heart-pounding, action packed world of deadly beauty!***The game was among the first to take benefit of MMX CPU instructions, and for a DOS game it had unusually impressive 3D graphics.
