Congo: The Movie - Descent into Zinj  Viacom Newmedia (Illumina Productions)1995Congo is an adventure game adapted from the 1995 movie of the same name. The plot revolves around a search for a diamond that presumably have power enough to change the world of telecommunications as we know it. On a mission issued by Travis, the head of TraviCom, you are sent in contemporary Congo in order to recover the diamond and find out what has happened to another expedition led by Dr. Karen Ross.

As you arrive at the place of you destination more and more pieces of the puzzle begin to fit together in a wholesome picture as even more questions arise. Who are the monster gorillas populating the area? What is the meaning of all the Egyptian writings found throughout the place? What drives Amy -- a sentient gorilla capable of speech, to help you? And most importantly -- how to survive and get hold of the precious diamond and, perhaps, save the unfortunate souls of the first expedition in the process.

The gameplay is that of a classical inventory-based adventure. Although occasionally the game does depart from the formula. It mostly concerns the sequences where player should operate a multi-functional device resembling a laptop. With it's use player is able to analyze visual images to gain clues, record audio, track homing signals on the map and examine additional info from the files downloaded from the TraviCom network. Other notable gameplay features include navigating a river by boat and a maze-like sequence in the middle of the game.

Visually the game is similar to the first-person adventure games of it's era tracing its roots to Myst. It contains the same pre-rendered 3D backgrounds with the smoothly animated transition sequences and the characters done in live-action, except for Amy who is also executed in pre-rendered 3D.

The game is supplied with the trailer of the afore-mentioned 1995 movie.***

Torin's Passage  Sierra On-Line1995Torin is a young boy who lives in a little country house on a planet called Strata with his parents and with his purple cat-like friend Boogle. One day he returns home, only to find out his parents were imprisoned in a magical spell. Apparently, the spell was cast by a sorceress named Lycentia. He must now travel to distant lands to find a way to remove the spell and confront the sorceress. What he doesn't know is that this journey will also help him to discover his true origins and his true purpose in life...

Created by Al Lowe of Leisure Suit Larry fame, Torin's Passage is a fairy tale-like humorous adventure with cartoon-style graphics and animations. Torin interacts with characters and objects in a point-and-click fashion, and can also use Boogle's special shape-shifting abilities. During their journey, Boogle will learn how to turn into a variety of objects, which is essential for solving many of the game's puzzles. The game also has many traditional inventory-based tasks as well as other types of puzzles. To facilitate the puzzle-solving, the game has a built-in hint system; using the hints will deduce points from the player's score.***

Alien Logic Musicbank1995You are on the world of Jorune, a colony whose communications with Earth has been cut off for 3500 years. The residents of your village have been taken by the evil Red Shantha, and you alone have survived with the help of another Shantha and some serendipitous, if not exactly appealing, events. During the course of this game, you will attempt to increase your use of Isho (magic), gain knowledge of Warpworld, discover the location of the Red Shantha, defeat him and rescue your fellow villagers. In addition to your main quest, there are also several mini quests to complete. While the game is somewhat non-linear, and the completion of all quests are not required to achieve your final goal, the fulfillment of these quests usually improves your abilities or gives you access to something you need.
As the game opens, you are in the Mountain Crown of Tan-Iricid, home of alien creatures known as the Thriddle. You are given some information, allowed to ask some questions, and sent on your way to the large human settlement of Ardoth to begin your adventure.

Once in Ardoth, you'll visit all the places in town, equip yourself with a laser cutting kit, then set out to explore: searching for Shanthic Ruins, crystals, limilates (plants with special properties), and (of course) monsters. Along the way, you'll have the chance to increase your power, skills, and knowledge so that you will be able to rescue the townspeople. As part of your journeys, you will discover floating islands in the clouds, known as skyrealms, explore the depths of ancient ruins where no human has ever been, discover plots that threaten the realm, and learn enthralling histories of the various races. It is a fascinating journey.

Note: Visit the Thriddle often, they will give you locations of Shanthic sites and guide (railroad?) you on some of the quests.

Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat Mindscape1995This was and still is the most challenging tactical game I've ever played. You lead your little army through the missions you pick, losses carrying over to the following missions and you restoring and buying new squads every once in a while between missions with your limited funds. There's no base building, no super powers, only your squads and the massive forces against you. Although you may get past a mission, your losses may easily be too great to allow progressing any farther (and this may become apparent only after several missions). This leads to much frustration if you can't change your tactics to match in the earlier missions and effectively leads focus on minimizing your losses rather than just meeting the mission goals. labelimageminimize
