The story is obviously slapped on top as beyond finding the ball, why the protagonist keeps going for miles and miles underground, dropping down immensely deep chutes with no way back and so forth is beyond comprehension and the initial curiosity one can blame on him being archeologist hardly explains why he doesn't just study what he finds and stick around the hole he fell in through to wait for the promised rescue (which he seemingly could've relied on quite easily).
