You lead your little army through the missions you pick, losses carrying over to the following missions and you restoring and buying new squads every once in a while between missions with your limited funds. There's no base building, no super powers, only your squads and the massive forces against you. Although you may get past a mission, your losses may easily be too great to allow progressing any farther (and this may become apparent only after several missions).
