Combat Mission: Fortress Italy ?? labelminimizeminimize
Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat Mindscape1995This was and still is the most challenging tactical game I've ever played. You lead your little army through the missions you pick, losses carrying over to the following missions and you restoring and buying new squads every once in a while between missions with your limited funds. There's no base building, no super powers, only your squads and the massive forces against you. Although you may get past a mission, your losses may easily be too great to allow progressing any farther (and this may become apparent only after several missions). This leads to much frustration if you can't change your tactics to match in the earlier missions and effectively leads focus on minimizing your losses rather than just meeting the mission goals. labelimageminimize

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines  Eidos Interactive;Sold Out Sales & Marketing (Pyro Studios)1998Squad-based WW2 combat game which heavily emphasised strategy over charge in. Renowned for its difficulty, the approach was refreshing, and the choice of 2D was not inappropriate. Never a bestseller, however.

Rainbow Six  Red Storm Entertainment1998The most revolutionary action/strategy game of its kind. Command an elite anti-terrorist strike squad in a series of heart-racing missions across the world, from the North Sea to the Australian Outback. Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 is a fast-paced, thrilling action game like no other. Command an elite anti-terrorist strike squad in a series of heart-racing missions across the world, from the North Sea to the Australian Outback. Make a plan using innovative and detailed controls, then take up your weapons and execute the mission, giving orders in real time and taking out terrorists with well-placed shots. Add addictive, challenging multiplay via LAN or Internet unlike any game you've ever played before, and Rainbow 6 is a must-have offering! Play up to 16 players with Real-Time voice. Assemble your team from an international pool of 20 special operatives. Select authentic gear and weapons for each team member and plan your attack using a blueprint map and 3D view.***An excellent action/strategy game. labelminimizesubject
Delta Force NovaLogic19982009-06-18 on Steam***Delta Force was the first game to use voxel technology, which allowed outdoor 3D environments to be rendered far more effectively than with Textured Polygons, although not quite as sharply or attractively.

Delta Force's gameplay was top notch, emphasising strategy over killing. However, AI and the still developing voxel graphics (and a lack of falling damage) let it down. Its revolutionary graphics system did not replace textured polygons, and has not done so yet.

X-COM: Terror from the Deep  2K Games (Microprose Software)1999The war continues... X-COM: UFO Defense brought you to a galactic battlefield. X-COM: Terror from the Deep brings the alien terror into a totally new dimension.

Seeking to take advantage of a weakened Earth, X-COM's deep space foes unexpectedly change strategy and launch a powerful second front against planet Earth.

In the dark depths of vast oceans, long sleeping forces are awakened by reanimation signals sent out across the galactic silence by their interstellar brothers and sisters. Slowly but surely, an army of hibernating alien sea creatures awakens. Your combat now extends to the strange new worlds of the deep where superior alien technologies threaten the very survival of this planet - your planet - Earth.***[Spanish]

Similar to the first X-COM, but much better about the situation of mass action from the beginning, a devilish difficulty (even more than the UFO Defense), a requirement of decision making as constant as cruel and the introduction of the water element and civil defense missions in the game (adds one more layer to its immense complexity) It's better than the UFO Defense.

6 out of 10***2.5D - tactical missions and most of the game is done with raster graphics, but the globe in geoscape is rendered with flat polygons for land and textured polygons for water.***This entry would still benefit from 2 screenshots, one from terror mission and another from underwater mission.***A very simple port of TFTD to Windows with no improvements or changes what-so-ever, just that it runs natively on Windows XP. X-COM: UFO Defense Hasbro Interactive (Mythos Games)1999A very simple port of UFO Defense to Windows with no improvements or changes what-so-ever, just that it runs natively on Windows XP (and doesn't even do that very well). Close Combat 3: The Russian Front  Microsoft (Atomic Games)1999Once again perfect evidence that 2D does not mean a bad game, even by 1999. Well planned maps, absorbing strategy combat, a vast and realistic unit choice and impressive ambience that captures the claustrophobic and terrifying feel of WW2 fighting. labelimageminimize
Jagged Alliance 2 Sir-Tech;TalonSoft;Strategy First (Sir-Tech Canada)1999From official site:
"FIGHT FOR FREEDOM. KILL FOR CASH.
A ruthless dictator has taken control of the tiny nation of Arulco. The country's large army has a terrified population in its iron grip, its only opposition is a ragtag bunch of rebels. The bad news: you're in charge of the rebels. The good news: some of the world's best mercenaries will fight on your side...if you can afford them.

Ahead lies a savage struggle for freedom. To win, you'll need the negotiating skills of a diplomat, the strategic genius of a general, the battle tactics of a commando... And A Whole Lot Of Guts."

Delta Force 2 NovaLogic1999You're a member of the U.S. Army's best kept secret: the elite SPECIAL OPERATIONS unit known as Delta Force, formed to BATTLE TERRORISM throughout the world. When the best of the rest can't handle the op, YOU are called into action. Can you handle THE JOB?***

[84]***2009-06-18 on Steam***Once again, used a Voxel display system, not, of course, Raster. (cf Delta Force for my explanation).

Impressive sequel to Delta Force, that improved and enhanced the capabilities of voxels (and added falling damage). Vast landscapes and individually modeled blades of grass made the fighting very realistic. However, let down by a multitude of bugs and poor AI, especially on the part of your squaddies.

Abomination: The Nemesis Project  Eidos Interactive (Hothouse Creations)1999Your task is to lead the Project Nemesis agents in the fight to find the cause of the plague and to attempt to reverse its effects. But your team of agents is no ordinary one - each member is genetically engineered in some way... Savage has extraordinary strength, Pyro can burn enemies at a distance, Detonate can turn objects into explosives, Ninja can become invisible, Creep can take on the form of others, Doc can heal, Viper can generate protective shields and Steel has strengthened fire-resistent skin.***

It offers the player an unprecedented freedom of action integrating command of large squads and use of any available vehicles with total immersion. Player can experience the best cold war military equipment - infantry, mobile, armor and aircraft - in large and detailed 3D environment. The game contains a single nonlinear campaign, built in full-featured mission editor and multiplayer combat.***A vast, complete combat simulation, deep and emotional as well as brutally realistic. If you're shot, you die. If you shoot someone, they die. The ability to drive (or fly) all sorts of military vehicles just adds to the experience.
