prehistoric — specifically late iron age, but this lasted up till around 11th or 13th century in Finland (there was no real written language before Swedes conquered Finland and this is set before that).
... FYI: Iron Age in Finland was from ~500 BCE to ~1200 CE. Sweden conquered Finland sometime between 1150-1250.
