Asteka 2: Templo Del Sol | Tokyo Shouseki;Infocom (Compile) | 1988 | Deep in the jungles of Mexico lie the ancient Mayan tombs of Chichen Itza. Eternal resting place of kings - and the vast treasure that was buried with them, including the legendary Sun Key. Now a famous archaeologist has vanished there, leaving behind only a tattered notebook that speaks not just of treasure, but of the bloodthirsty demons that guard it. And with the notebook, the legacy of treasure and terror has passed to you... Can you penetrate the heart of the mystery, and find the mythical Sun Key? Or will the tombs of Chichen Itza claim you among the dead? | NES | labelimagesubject |
City Adventure Touch: Mystery of Triangle | Toho (Compile) | 1987 | A game based on the highschool/sports manga and anime series "Touch". Your goal is to rescue ten cats which are hidden somewhere in a huge city and its surroundings. You are controlling two male characters at the same time (another female character is constantly following you around). That makes controlling the characters very complicated. You have to buy items from time to time to open up new part of the game world or to beat some bosses. The game is not very playable. Worst thing is the very limited inventory space. In order to free some space you have to drop several items from time to time. But this can only be done in certain houses! Also, shuffling through the inventory items is bothersome. The city is a huge maze with many streets, a forest, beach etc. Its hard to find your way around without a map and walkthrough. Compile should have kept with making great shoot'em ups instead of doing such a below average Action-Adventure game. | NES | labelimageminimize |

Gorby no Pipeline Daisakusen | Tokuma Shoten (Compile) | 1991 | Tetris and Pipemania combine. Use falling blocks to construct a pipe from Japan (right side of playfield) to the USSR (left side) and improve Japan-USSR relations. Don't block the pipe, or a row of garbage pipes will be added. Supposedly made in cooperation with the USSR via their embassy in Japan; negotiations included the use Mikhail Gorbachev likeness, the storyline, and timing of the game's publishing.***[i]ゴルビーのパイプライン大作戦 Gorby's Big Pipeline Plan Gorby's Big Pipeline Operation Gorby's Great Pipeline Mission[/i] | NES | labelimagesubject |
Gun Nac | Tonkin House;Nexoft;ASCII (Compile) | 1990 | The most happening place in the universe is the trendy, upscale solar system of IOTA Synthetica, part of the Galactic Federation of artificial stars. It's as far from dirty old Earth as can be... But don't sign up to go yet! A strange cosmic energy field with a major attitude has engulfed the system, and the most outrageous things are happening. Ordinary inanimate objects are coming to life - harmless little animals are becoming rabid giants - and the freaked-out residents are under attack! The only Galactic Commander who can handle this ordeal is the eccentric renegade called Gun-Nac. He can oust this aura that's threatening the destruction of comfortable artificial life as we know it. But where in the universe is he? He could be as far away as Earth, searching for a new Game Pak. Commander Gun-Nac, if you read this, call H.Q., A.S.A.P., O.K.? [Zerothis]***Take the concept of a billiard game, simplify the rules, design many extraordinary tables and you get a game like Lunar Ball (or Lunar Pool as it is called in the US/EU). Since the controls are good and the movement of the balls are comprehensible the game is surprisingly fun.***Lunar Pool takes the historical game of billiards and reinvents it with a unique and futuristic flair. The rules are simple: All you need to do is use your cue stick to hit the white cue ball, causing it to hit the other numbered balls and make them go into the pockets. You can enjoy nearly unlimited game play with 30 tables, two different ball arrangements, and the ability to change the degree of friction on the table. You can play against a computer or another human player, so try challenging someone once you've got the hang of the game. | NES | labelimagesubject |
Puyo Puyo | Tokuma Shoten Intermedia (Compile) | 1993 | 1 player or 2 players. [Zerothis]***Game description from [[link:http://www.romhacking.net Romhacking.net]]: This is a nifty little game here. It's like Tetris or Columns, except a hundred times better :). Basically, Puyo fall from the top of the screen, and you have to match at least four of the same color to clear them. You can play it infinitely until you die ala Tetris and Columns, or you can play with certain goals, like trying to clear so many Puyo all at once, or to chain two clears together, etc. It's wicked fun, so try it out! Romancia: Dragon Slayer Jr. | Tokyo Shoseki (Compile) | 1987 | Romancia is the third game in the "Dragon Slayer" series and ported from Japanese homecomputers. It is a rather typical Action-Adventure type of its era, where the biggest difficulty lies in finding out what to do and handle some nasty game design decisions. The game is not overly long or complex, but difficult nonetheless. Limited inventory space and it is easily to get stuck because you used an item unwisely. With a good walkthrough it was playable... until the last boss, which took just too many hits until killed. | NES | labelimageminimize |
The Guardian Legend | Irem;Brøderbund (Compile) | 1988 | "The Guardian Legend" is an enjoyable mix of Zelda-style overhead Action-Adventure and vertical scrolling shoot'em up stages. Both parts are technically very well done, the game never seems to slow down even with lots of objects on screen. Compile showed again that they knew how to make this work. The game has lots of content with over 10 areas to explore on foot and over 20 shoot'em up "corridors". Lots of upgradable extra weapons. Quite impressive especially considering they packed this all in just a 1Mbit cartridge. After some areas the whole procedure felt a bit like rinse and repeat. There were no real surprises any more and the game started more and more to throw the same color-swapped enemies at you. But altogether a very good game.***The gameplay alternates between shoot'em up and RPG for a lot of fun (not to mention the fun lightsaber weapon and a two-bladed one, 11 years before The Phantom Menace).***Long ago in a distant galaxy, an alien race sent a huge world --called Naju-- hurling towards Earth, loaded with cargo of mysterious life forms. During the long journey, these creatures have multiplied and become increasingly evil-- and now Naju teems with evil. However, deep within this complex globe are self destruct mechanisms that can be activated to destroy it before it reaches Earth. Now, you must battle your way deep within Naju's labyrinths to destroy the alien world. You are the guardian of Earth and your saga will become The Guardian Legend.***Great gameplay and music track. Definitely the best game for the NES, not to mention that the main character is the first scantily-clad female. XD [Zhu-sama]***Broderbund merely brought this game to the West, they had no part in making it. Compile developed the game and Irem published it. Guardian Legend, or Guardic Gaiden, is sort of a sequel to the MSX game Guardic. Anyway, this is an awesome game--a true classic. The gameplay is fantastic, diverse and challenging. You owe it to yourself to play this game. I would rank this as one of the best games for the NES. [cjlee001] | NES | labelimagesubject |
Zanac A.I. | FCI (Compile) | 1987 | About a year after the original Famicom Disk System version in Japan, FCI brought a cartridge version to the US. Zanac is an early shooter from developer Compile, the team that would eventually program some of the best classic shmups ever. And already they show their skills with this game. It is highly playable with a "modern" extra weapon system and very fast, fluent graphics that don't flicker at all. Only the background graphics are the typical nondescript shapes that many old shooters have. The music is also well done. Even after a year of its initial release Zanac stays to be a very good shoot'em up game.***ZANAC is a vertically scrolling shoot-'em-up game that was released in November 1986. Take control of the state-of-the-art fighter, ZANAC, with the objective of destroying the bases of the mechanized enemy forces. Use your full array of regular weapons as well as eight special weapons to clear the 12 intense areas of the game. Be careful, though, as the game changes the degree of difficulty in real time based on how well you play. This ensures that it feels like you're experiencing a new game every time you play. | NES | labelimagesubject |
Kirby's Avalanche | Banpresto;Compile;Hal (Nintendo) | 1995 | Everyone's favorite round, pink hero takes a break from swallowing his enemies to put your brain to work in this fast-paced puzzle game. Players take control of Kirby and match wits with well-known enemies from the Kirby series (including his arch rival, King Dedede) in an effort to win the First Annual Dream Land Avalanche Competition. The simple-but-addictive game play revolves around brightly colored blobs and boulders. When the right amount of matching blobs are stacked, they explode and rain down on your opponent's field of play. Repeat this until your screen is clear to move on to the next round. But be careful—the farther you advance, the faster the blobs fall and the smarter the opponents get. Are you good enough to help Kirby become the avalanche king?***Although it is practically a port of "Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine," this is still the best puzzle game around. Madou Monogatari: Hanamaru Dai Youchienji | Tokuma Shoten Intermedia (Compile) | 1996 | Game description from [[link:http://www.romhacking.net Romhacking.net]]: OH MY GOD CUTE. Madou Monogatari follows the adventures of the adorable Puyo Puyo mascot Arle, as she tries to find eight crystals, which in doing so will grant her one wish. You know what she wishes for? To pass kindergarten. Go on, say “awwwww”. We won’t tell. Even though it’s based on Puyo Puyo characters (or, as Gideon Zhi is so quick to mention, Puyo Puyo is based on Madou Monogatari characters), this is an RPG through and through. So if you suck at Puyo Puyo (like me) or just plain don’t like it, well, you need to play this game anyways. It does away with your typical RPG conventions in a way that you really wouldn’t expect in some cutesy little Puyo Puyo game. Like, there’s no indicator of your hit points at all. All you have to go on is all the dancing around that Arle does. I mean, if she’s just kinda drooping there, with her eyes all spirally lines, you better Goddamn well heal that girlie, stat. You’re a magic user, so you don’t have any actual physical attacks at your disposal. You’ve got your three core attack spells (Fire, Ice Storm, Lightning) at your disposal, which don’t use any magic power (for which, again, there’s no indicator), and then you’ve got all your other spells, like Healing and some other stuff. If you cast Bayoen on a monster, and Arle tells you she has plenty of magic power, then you’re still doing ok. There’s a whole hell of a lot of walking around going on, but the game world is pretty small, so it’s not that bad. Plus, you’ve got these awesome flying squirrels that you can ride. It’s pretty badass, man. Super Nazo Puyo Tsuu: Ruruu no Tetsuwan Hanjouki | Compile | 1996 | Game description from [[link:http://agtp.romhack.net/ Aeon Genesis]]: Super Nazo (Puzzle) Puyo 2 is yet another game in that charming little Puyo Puyo franchise by compile, featuring everyone´s favorite colored jellybean-like blobs! Of course, Super Nazo Puyo 2 plays rather differently from the rest of the Super Puyo Puyo games (which you may have played as either Kirby´s Avalance or Dr. Robotnik´s Mean Bean Machine.) In SNP2, you play as Lulu (or whatever her name is), some other character in the Puyo Puyo series who surprisingly is NOT Arle Nadja. You go around the countryside talking to people, who challenge you to solve puzzles in a Puyo Puyo environment! It gets pretty difficult too! Game description from [[link:http://www.romhacking.net Romhacking.net]]: This game rocks! It’s an RPG/Columns-type-game hybrid. I know it’s a tough sell, but hear me out! You wander around in an RPG-type environment–you know the type: overhaed-view, tile-based, blah, blah, blah. But when you encounter enemies, instead of being thrust into your standard menu-driven combat system, you have to play this Columns/Tetris falling blocks game and win. It’s fun–really! What's block-a-riffic? Well, it's one of those games where blocks rain down from the heavens and you have to match a bunch of the same color and make them disappear. In fact, the original Puyo Puyo was ported as Kirby's Avalanche and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, respectively for Nintendo and Sega consoles.
