Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth  Bethesda Softworks;Ubisoft Entertainment (Headfirst Productions)2006single playerINT 2009-06-16 on Steam, by Bethesda Softworks (lang: eng, fre, ger)***The game is initially very much like survival horror, but "degenerates" sometime in the midpoint of the game to stealth FPS and later to plain FPS (although only because the enemies no longer have firearms and you don't have to watch out for them shooting at you anymore, the character is extremely frail [compared to other FPS games] and wouldn't survive such).
There may be some confusion on the true nature of the protagonist. But, if one bothers to understand the mythos, we can see that the Yith only swapped bodies with him. Explaining the sequence where he was in an alien body for a time, and the amnesiac time of his past. His consciousness had been swapped by the Yith, leaving his consciousness in the "original" body of the Yith who had taken over his. Some have proposed that the protagonist himself is Yith but this ignores how the Yith work (they swap minds across time and space, usually for purposes of study). The Yith either wiped his memory or the experience was too traumatic that caused the initial amnesia. As an additional note, the physical form of the Yith is actually not their original, simply what species they had taken over in force (supposedly not all can house their minds for prolonged periods of time).
***Call of Cthulhu -- Dark Corners of the Earth is a first-person horror game that combines intense action and adventure elements. You will draw upon your skills in exploration, investigation, and combat while faced with the seemingly impossible task of battling evil incarnate.

Other than fighting, you have the ability to interact freely with characters and the gaming environment. To increase the sense of immersion, there is no interface or 'HUD' on screen at any time during normal gameplay. Instead, more intuitive methods are available for you to assess your condition, ammunition levels, and other relevant information. The combat within the game is extremely realistic, with a detailed damage and healing system that breaks down the healing process into conditions and treatments - rather than having the typical FPS 'health packs' lying around everywhere.

The game also allows you to stamp your own style onto the proceedings via an advanced AI system that can react to your method of play. Cthulhu enemies can roam freely around the environment - opening doors and tracking you down single-handedly or in groups. To stay alive you won't just be able to outshoot them, you'll need to outthink them as well.

You will have to keep your mental health in check as you are exposed to the increasingly shocking images of the Cthulhu Mythos. You will need to combat enemies using the environment, powerful and evil artifacts, Alien technology, or by fighting with weapons that are completely authentic for the period.

Set during the 1920s, Call of Cthulhu is based on the Cthulhu Mythos of HP Lovecraft, an American writer of fantasy and horror. Lovecraft's stories tell of unthinkable evil, psychic possession, and mythical worlds and his work has profoundly influenced numerous fantasy and science fiction writers, including Stephen King and Anne Rice.

The technology powering Call of Cthulhu has provided Headfirst with the means to present an incredibly detailed and accurate depiction of the sights and sounds of this unique 1920's New England setting. A diverse range of cutting edge special effects is utilized to ensure both unprecedented levels of realism and an exact portrayal of your mental degredation.

Key Features:
* Diverse array of levels from quaint towns to alien locations, including Deep One City
* Dynamic Sanity system resulting in hallucinations, panic attacks, vertigo, paranoia, and more!
* Incredibly detailed real-time graphics with atmospheric lighting and dynamic shadows
* Intelligent gameplay involving puzzle solving as well as combat and exploration
* 1920s weaponry and vehicles as well as evil artifacts and alien technology
* Lovecraft's famous monsters and locations

[Groovy_Duck]***A well-made RPG with great music and visuals. The story is decent and the characters are likeable. The battle system is a little unbalanced I think. Once you get Quick Attack and a half-decent weapon, you can mess up the enemies pretty easily. Overall, a great RPG.

[27]***It is one thousand years after Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. Raziel, once a mighty vampire and lieutenant of Kain, rises from eternal banishment where Kain put him out of jealous rage. Now, after having been freed by the Elder God, Raziel is out to free the world from the dreaded vampire clans and to destroy Kain himself!
The shadows of Nosgoth is a vast 3D world packed with deadly creatures, amazing graphics, and spectacular special effects. During his quest, Raziel survives by feeding on the souls of the undead and as Raziel defeats his enemies, he gains abilities and weapons that will allow him to ultimately challenge Kain himself.***Several hundreds of years after Kain decided to damn Nosgoth, he is now the Master of Nosgoth. He has 6 vampire lieutenants, one of which he will punish for an apparent reason of jealousy of the lieutenant developing a dark gift before the Master.

The lieutenant, Raziel, is condemned to destruction by being cast in the Lake of the Dead, but he is somehow saved from total annihilation by an unknown entity called the Elder God. He then vows vengeance against his former master, but when he returns to the material world he finds that much has changed.

This game is fully 3D and has been wrongly compared to Tomb Raider. The controls are actually good and precise, the 3D engine was the best of its time with very large and detailed environments. Raziel is no longer a typical vampire: instead of drinking blood, he devours souls, and has actually become a vampire hunter. He kills vampires by various means such as impalement or immolation. He can also shift back and forth between the spirit/spectral realm and the material realm when need be.

A bit later in the game he will find the Soul Reaver, but a different version of the sword than from Blood Omen: it's a spectral sword that is fused to his body and his very being. The Soul Reaver will become a key element in the Legacy of Kain storyline.

AMD's 3DNow! is advertized on the back cover, so obviously this game can benefit from it.***You're Raziel, one of Kain's Vampire Generals.. or rather, you were. Kain betrayed you, when you showed him that you had evolved beyond him. So he granted you death, by ripping out your new wings and throwing you down in to the Abyss. Dead, at least that's what you thought, you re-awaken in the Underworld, right under the nose the Elder. Confused, weak, and no longer a vampire, you set out to settle some matters with your former master, Kain.

More in-depth description:
... Although you were no longer a vampire, you still suffered some of their natural weaknesses, such that of water burning you like acid or sun scorching your skin like fire. However, you rid most of these weaknesses from yourself over time as you devour the souls of your slain enemies. You're young in your new form, though, and can't hold your physical form forever in the material realm, constantly draining your strength, the longer you stay there unsated. So at any time you're weakened too much, you're transported back into the spirit realm where you can sate your hunger with the lost souls. Your ability to transport yourself back and forth between material and spiritual realms is fundamental to your success, and adds an interesting depth to some puzzles and fights. However, you're practically immortal, even if you were to die, as if you could, you're transported back to the underworld, below throbbing tendrils and the everwatchful gaze of the Elder.
Raziel travels across several eras of Nosgoth in an attempt to solve a complex plot involving himself, the Soul Reaver, Kain and the time streamer Moebius.

The game somewhat recycles, but improves, its predecessor's 3D engine. The gameplay is similar, but the controls and the fighting are improved and Raziel can use several different weapons. The Reaver can now remain even when Raziel is hit but it has the penalty of damaging him through overuse.
The puzzles are now more varied and improved.

There's a lot of time travel involved in this one, and is a bit more complex in the plot than the prequel, but at least you get to know the world better, and your own history, before you became a vampire and some odd prophetic stuff about your destiny. The US-release of R-Type contained all stages. The game itself is an excellent arcade port with high playability and was the PC-Engine's first 'killer application'.

R-Type  Electric Dreams;Ocean (Rainbow Arts)1988single playerA DAZZLING AND DEADLY GAME OF COSMIC ENCOUNTER.
The final showdown has begun! At the controls of your powerful R-9 interstellar craft, you maneuver into enemy territory-the monstrous Bydo Empire.
Your mission: to destroy the evil forces who have held the cosmos in fear and relentless suffering.
It's a fight to the death against an uncommon cadre of space oddities-gigantic slithering serpents, whirling space bugs and fantastic galactic warships--all bombarding your lone craft amid an exotic cosmic landscape.
Armed with the latest R-Type lasers, you possess spectacular fighting power. But your enemies are ruthless in their attack. To survive, you'll need to seek out the power crystals that give you added weapons strength and protection.
Can you endure the onslaught? Are you a mighty-enough warrior to survive eight stages of battle to face the final confrontation and win?
The fate of the cosmos is in your hands.
R-TYPE-the outrageous game of cosmic encounter that has the entire galaxy talking.***

The last four levels are much harder than the first and thus only die-hard shoot'm up fans will really enjoy this 'part' of the game.

Terraria Re-Logic;Headup Games (Re-Logic)2011single player, InternetAn open sandbox metroidvania with some crafting and base building, calling it "a 2D Minecraft" is an oversimplification of its formula, way more focused in rapid action and platforming.

Pros:
-Great atmosphere and music.
-Amazing sense of wonder.
-Challenging events and biomes.
-Variety of NPCs and enemies.
-Subtle cross-referenced easter eggs that actually improve the game and don't seem forced.
-Big depths with many cave systems.
-2D side scroll eases exploration, making it less confusing.
-Incredibly well done crafting tree and progress system.
-Bosses.
-Player and map are interdependent (you can play as much worlds as you wish with the same character)

Cons:
-Addictive as hello without o.

10 of 10, would kill again a fusion of Bowser's lieutenant and someone who can summon fire without flint or tinder to earn a hat.***1.3.0 (2015-06-30)
