Blood Bowl  Cyanide2009Blood Bowl is the video game adaptation of Games Workshop's famous board game of the same name.

A brutal team sport unfolding in a parallel fantasy world based on Warhammer and American football, Blood Bowl invites gamers to form a team of players from such races as: Orcs, Elves, Humans, Dwarfs and many other fantasy creatures, and launch themselves into battle in the bloodiest of arenas. This strategy sports game combines a fine balance of tactics and bone crunching action!

The game offers two game modes. The first, which is fully real time, offers a spectacular gameplay. Intense battles between blocking linemen and daring displays of agility of players leaping and dodging through opponents tackle zones, while powerful spells and dirty trick special plays are unleashed across the pitch; all this creates a highly charged atmosphere. Of course, since it is sometimes difficult to keep an eye on the entire field at once, the game's interface offers different tactical and strategic setups, while the AI is responsible for managing the players on the field.

The second game mode, an actual turn-based game, is a treat for players of the original board game because it is an exact replica of Games Workshop's tabletop masterpiece. The original rules have been faithfully reproduced, and it contains all of the devices, strategies, play and rhythm of the original game.

The single-player experience allows the player to manage a team throughout an entire season of Blood Bowl, through the Old World of Warhammer. The team will evolve over the course of victories, experience gained and awards won. With its immense depth, the game can almost be considered as a management game, from managing the popularity and sponsorship of players to the purchase and sale of players, as well as their aging, retirement and even death.

In multiplayer, the player will be able to throw down a challenge to other Blood Bowl players and participate in large tournaments on the Internet in order to climb the official ranks.

Description:
"It promises to be an exciting day in Evenhold. The pirate Henri Le Marque, scourge of the Malphigian Sea, is slated for execution today. The execution will take place at the jail yard in the harbor district. In case the hanging isn’t enough of a lure, Le Marque was the most successful pirate of the Malphigian Sea, and reputed to have hidden a king’s ransom in booty. Perhaps, when faced with the gallows, he will make the grand gesture of sharing what he won’t be able to enjoy."

"Be on your best behavior, because the harbor patrol is accustomed to dealing with waterfront scum. If you want to scrap with someone, be sure that you are in a very private place; a place where no one will summon the watch."



Comments:
Pat Hurst has shaped up as one of the best Eamon authors of all time. His puzzles are tough, his reasoning tight, his stories consistent, and his descriptions are so rich with detail that they are generally two-disk adventures. Buccaneer! is no exception. It is a two-part adventure, one part to a disk, and each disk is jammed to the limit with detailed descriptions, scores of special effects, and special programming.

The first part of Buccaneer! involves your escapades in the harbor district of Evenhold. There is no specific quest here, but there are dozens of things to get involved in. You can drink, fight, gamble, steal, get arrested, get shanghaied, bribe your way into places you don’t belong, attend the hanging of Henri Le Marque, make business deals, hire a ship, crew it, prepare for a sea voyage, and many other things as well. The general idea is to pick up some clues about the whereabouts of Le Marque’s treasure, and prepare to put to sea in search of the treasure in part two. It even appeared possible to set yourself up in business as a smuggler or freebooter.

Part two is actually a completely separate adventure, with its own MAIN PGM and text files. There is a transfer of information from part one, so that part two uses the ship, crew, and artifacts that you obtained in part one. Part two is an adventure on the Malphigian Sea, in which you can sail to a half-dozen islands in search of treasure and adventures. There is a lot that can happen while on the high seas, including encounters with merchant ships, pirates, naval vessels, sea monsters, uncharted reefs, storms, and mutinies. How well you fare will depend on how complete your preparations were in part one. Every island is unique; a mini-adventure in its own right. The sea is not structured into rooms, but allows you to sail where you will; also, the sea is quite large and requires expert navigation.

The seagoing adventure is unique in its execution. The effects are very good, and the ship-to-ship battles are very well done and full of surprises. It is not difficult to get yourself killed on some of the islands, but Pat has made it very easy to restart part two without needing to return to part one or perform a SAVE.

My first impression of Buccaneer! was that I was smothering in detail. It is very richly described, with most descriptions running to 10-12 lines, and takes a bit of play to familiarize yourself with things before you can begin to really figure them out. It is not an adventure that you casually sit down to and expect to get anywhere quickly. I had to make pages and pages of notes and maps before I had learned enough in part one to take a shot at part two. It takes a lot of thought to figure out how you want to go about the sea voyage. There are eight ships to choose from, ranging from a small felucca with a crew of 4 (good for smuggling?) to a huge packet ship with 12 guns, 3 officers, and a crew of 24. You have 50 or 60 prospective crewmen to choose from, and each is a distinct person, with differing abilities and morals. You will need to select officers if your ship requires them. If you choose to ship cargo for trading in the islands, you will need to determine which of the many merchants you wish to deal with. And you must be certain that you have obtained everything that you need for the voyage, from grog for the crew’s morale to materials to repair damage at sea.

This was a very enjoyable adventure, and all the more satisfying for requiring a great deal of thought and careful decision among the many options. However, it was an expensive undertaking; I had to spend nearly 20,000 in gold to outfit my ship and put out to sea. I found less treasure than that and actually had a net LOSS of 6,000 by the end of the adventure, an experience that must be nearly unique in the history of Eamon.

During the game you can expand your business over 16 towns and try to get emperor of the country. Trading is the way you'll get your money. But it's not that easy, your trails may be plundered, your stocks may burn down, or anything else. It's also possible to get your own pirate hideouts to plunder your competitors goods. But be careful, if they find out who did that, you may end up in prison. When you claim a higher political position it's possible for you to change laws, rise taxes and many more. Dragonstomper  Starpath;Arcadia (Starpath)1982The story goes; a magician created an amulet that he could use to subdue the great dragon. On his way deep into the lair where the dragon slept, the amulet was lost and the magician was forced to leave without accomplishing his task. But the dragon found the amulet and used it to increase his intelligence and power. He recruited monsters and allied with evil men, terrorizing the surrounding kingdom. The king selected a dragon hunter to build up to become, "The DragonStomper".

An actual RPG on the lowly 2600. Made possible by the Super Charger adapter that loads multiple portions of the game that is stored as digital audio data on a cassette. It even has two music clips. Uses the joystick for a menu based interface. The game has multiple 'locations', including an expansive The Wilderness, churches, villages, castles, wilderness huts, bridges, trading shops, magic shops, The Scorpion Pit and The Dragon's Cave. The game has 3 distinct modes corresponding to its three loads. [list][*]Battling monsters to build up strength and become The DragonStomper. [*]Recruiting warriors to protect oppressed villages whilst buying, selling, and trading supplies. [*]Descending into The Dragons Cave, attacking it with a unit of warriors, and slaying it.[/list]This 3 step process is the recommended path, yet there are several alternatives that will work equally well (none of them are really shortcuts). For instance, if the player manages to find destroy the legendary amulet, the dragon will lose his power; after this, there is the choice of two more options. The Wilderness area is HUGH, considering most 2600 games were no more than 3 screens in size. There are no experience points or levels, rather stats can be directly improved (or lost) with items collected from defeated enemies. A Charm, Cross, Potion, Ring, or Staff will randomly: add strength and heal you, add dexterity, decrease strength, decrease dexterity, or reveal traps. An Axe and a Shield are the only weapons and armor available for use in The Wilderness. Keys can be used to open locked doors and treasure chests. Vitamins will restore strength. Elixir increases dexterity. Medicine protects against fever and acts as an antidote. Lanterns will reveal traps. A Rope or Chain can be used to descend into pits or into The Dragon's Cave. Rubies and Sapphires are more efficient than gold. Bow and Arrows can be used against the Dragon. The Flash spell will momentarily show all traps. The Vision spell will completely reveal traps. The Blast spell is for attack. The Protect spell makes to invincible to enemy attack for its duration. The Stun spell will stun enemies. The Unlock spell will dispel magic barriers.

Without doubt, DragonStomper would have been the shaper of things to come as the first RPG on the 2600. With subsequent RPGs for the system having better graphics, music, cut sequences, and more in-game story and dialog. Multi-loading from cassette (or CD, first available the same year as this game) and/or more ROM and RAM in the cartridges, would have allowed for chapter structured gameplay and/or each location to have its own load, complete with talking characters and side quests. An audio CD with voice and game data, couple with second generation supercharger like device(s), would have effectively became the first CD drive for consoles and could have included voice for characters and/or many tracks of music. Alas, the videogame market crashed in 1983-84 and DragonStomper remains the only RPG for the system. A huge setback for game quality but a boon for game hardware because the 2600 officially hung around until 1992 with a relative few innovative games. More innovative games, especially RPGs, may have extended its life even longer and delayed the success of consoles with more capabilities.

The game is set in Cyrodiil—a province of Tamriel, the continent on which all the games in the series have so far taken place.

The story begins with the player imprisoned in a cell for an unknown crime. Emperor Uriel Septim VII, accompanied by Imperial bodyguards known as the Blades, arrives in the prison, fleeing from assassins who have murdered the emperor's three sons and are now targeting him. The emperor and the Blades reveal that the player's jail cell contains a secret entrance to a part of the city's sewer that functions as an escape route. Pardoned by the emperor, the player follows the group into the sewer, where they come under attack by assassins. The blade captain is cut down during the fighting that ensues. Knowing he is destined to die by the hands of the assassins, Uriel Septim entrusts the player with the Amulet of Kings, worn by the Septim emperors of Tamriel, and orders the player to take it to a man named Jauffre, the grandmaster of the Blades, at Weynon Priory. Immediately afterward, one of the assassins kills the emperor. The player escapes the sewer and heads out into the open world of Cyrodiil.***

1) In [code]Oblivion.ini[/code] set [code]iMinGrassSize=130[/code] (default: 80), this makes grass more sparse (the grass is mostly CPU intensive).
2) Disable HDR and use only Bloom effect (HDR in Oblivion is very hackish anyway). In most other games HDR doesn't cause much performance issues nor looks as garish as it does in Oblivion.
3) In [code]Oblivion.ini[/code] set [code]bDSoundHWAcceleration=0[/code] (default: 1, eanbled) if sounds are strange.

Anything else is just choosing right quality vs speed trade-off with video settings.

5) There are plenty of user made mods that make the game look prettier, but this is usually accomplished with higher polycount models and larger textures, so if you have trouble running the game as is, don't even dream of it. INT 2009-06-16 on Steam, by Bethesda Softworks (lang: eng) --- GOTY edition, includes Knights of the Nine and the Shivering Isles expansions.***Oblivion, when it still wasn't out in the light, held my hopes of redeeming the errors done in Morrowind for the series, but woe it was not to be so. Oblivion is much like Morrowind, except they ruined the beast races' looks even more (though I kinda like it they chose not to use digitigrade legs for them instead of vainly trying to get them to work like they tried in Morrowind - it was a horrible sight if you don't know).

Anyways, Oblivion did have many improvements over Morrowind, the graphic mood isn't as happy as in Morrowind, but still needs work to reach what it was In Daggerfall to really suit my taste (Battlespire and Redguard had the mood right, too). The graphic side really had gained some improvement (mostly just tech eyecandy), except the land still looks like it's made of bent plastic like in Morrowind.

Unsurprisingly the AI seems to have received extremely little attention, with the opponents blindly rushing in at you or blasting from afar with little regard to tactics or anything else than to attack and.. well.. attack. The last time I saw AI this weak was in Serious Sam, but that game didn't really need it. Still, You'd have expected Oblivion to have something more advanced but no, it seems they ignored it completely.

It's also sad that they still rely on level-scaling the opponents to keep the "challenge" up, but that makes the world seem ridiculous since everything becomes tougher with you. So, in the end, you don't kick the ass out of those pesky rats any more easily then than you did when you just started out of the prison, which leaves room to question, what is the leveling there really for? It seems as if you leveling up means the world is becoming more and more dangerous simply because _you_ are becoming better (by around level 20 pretty much every bandit and God knows what is wearing full Daedric armour and weapons all enchanted to the brink with who knows what), raising curious questions about what your character really is to cause such grand change in the order of things.

Your actions still go largely unnoticed by others and have little impact on things that you can do, making one wonder what they really did for the series. The story goes on, the series gets better tech, but the gameplay stays the same crappy self from year to year.

If they ever decide to make fifth chapter, well... if it looks like nothing's changed from this for the better, then my hope for the series will be gone for good.***Game links:

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim  Bethesda Softworks (Bethesda Game Studios)2011Special Edition does little else than overhaul the graphics a little bit and bundle all the DLC, biggest change is moving from 32 bit to 64 bit but this does not change the game. Sin embargo, el juego si que peca de elementos que lo alejan demasiado del rol, como un argumento demasiado lineal (a pesar de las ramificaciones, el final es idéntico), los personajes invencibles (algo insufrible y que desgraciadamente comparte con el Fallout 3) y sobre todo un sistema de leveo carente de especialización real (sólo es cuestión de estar tiempo para tener al mago-guerrero-asesino perfecto).
Brilla por una comunidad mod increíble, y con una plataforma como Steam Workshop que le sienta como anillo al dedo.
