[Zerothis]***Balloon Fight is a [game=#101]Joust[/game] rip-off. But playability is good, so who can blame them for it?***Control a character to pop your opponents' balloons before they pop yours. Sounds easy, doesn't it? Don't be fooled by this game's simple premise or cute exterior. Underneath you'll find a surprisingly addictive game with strategy to spare. After mastering the easy-to-learn controls, you still have to get a grip on the game's impressively realistic physics. And if that's not enough, there are the ever-increasing enemies and environmental hazards like lightning and water. Try the game's second mode, Balloon Trip, if you feel like taking a break from the action and just want to see how long you can stay aloft. And hey, who doesn't like popping balloons sometimes?

Batsu & Terii Makyou no Tetsujin Rasu  Use1987Batsu & Terry is based on an 80's baseball-themed manga series. You control either a baseball throwing guy or a baseball bat swinging guy. The game doesn't offer much fun. The levels are full of re-occuring elements and mostly just boring. Most enemies you should just avoid instead of killing them. And the graphics and sound are by far not good enough to draw some positive attention to the game. I mean I have played much worse games on the Famicom/NES, but in the end "Batsu & Terry" struggles to be even a mediocre game. NESlabelimageminimize

Bionic Commando Rearmed  Capcom (GRIN)2008Classic side-scrolling gameplay is reporting back for duty with Bionic Commando Rearmed, a remake of the classic NES game, out now on PC.

20 years after the 8-bit classic was released, Bionic Commando Rearmed recreates the world of the original with a complete "2.5D" visual revamp. Bionic Commando Rearmed preserves the original's mix of swinging and shooting in an intense 2D side-scroller, all to the tune of a brand-new soundtrack based on the classic 8-bit music from the NES masterpiece.
But Rearmed is far more than just a remake - it features all-new modes such as the 2-player co-op play, smarter enemy AI, new bionic arm abilities, new weapons, bigger bosses and online rankings. Faithfully sticking to the story of the NES game, Bionic Commando Rearmed tells the story of Nathan "R.A.D." Spencer's first mission, sent in to retrieve captured agent Super Joe from the hands of the Imperials.
Fans of the original story can expect to see all the characters from the NES version, as well as the memorable moments that made the title so popular with fans. Rearmed will also link-up to its 3D "big brother" coming to PC, with unlockable content, in-game hints and a story that spans both games.

Key features:

*Classic Bionic Commando side-scrolling gameplay, updated with new abilities, weapons and bosses
*2-player co-op mode
*Total modern visual and audio revamp
*Cross-game interoperability – complete specific parts of Bionic Commando Rearmed to unlock new content and hints for the Bionic Commando sequel
*Challenge Rooms – obstacles courses and swing puzzles that test your skills, with your best times ranked against other users in online leaderboards
*Top-Down Stages – the return of the top-down scrolling gameplay of the original's 'Enemy Encounter' stages, with remixed music from the classic Commando!
*Multiplayer – up to 4 players can face off in a frantic melee of shooting and swinging!
*In-game art designed by Shinkiro, one of Capcom's most talented artists

Booby Kids  Nichibutsu1987"Booby Kids" (yeah that title is great) is a typical "collect all items to open the exit door" game. It is an arcade port, but the levels are all new and the gameplay adds something here and there (the TG-16 version [game=#10564]Cratermaze[/game] is a much more faithful port). You can trap enemies by digging holes. There are some extra items that slow down enemies or make you invincible for a short period of time. Sometimes you must bomb your way free to open up ways and find hidden items. The levels consist of different times zones, starting with a prehistoric-theme and ending with a futuristic setting. While the graphics change in each time zone the general gameplay elements stay the same. "Booby Kids" is worth to check out if you like maze / action games. NESlabelimageminimize

[52]***In Captain Silver, you play the role of Jim, a brave young lad with a taste of adventure. You embark on a journey to find Captain Silver's secret treasure hoard, which is rumored to be hidden on an island in the Eastern Seas.

There are six scenes in the game. During his travels, Jim will explore villages, fight his way on board ships, venture through caves, and wander around tropical islands. In each of these six scenes, Jim must use his sword to kill cats, rats, bats, witches, skeletons, and other creatures that are waiting for him. When Jim touches, or is shot at, by a creature, he loses one of his lives, but when he kills a creature, he can collect some gold that they leave behind, which can be used to buy items from shops. However, rather than getting gold, enemies leave behind some gold containing one of the letters that spell the word "CAPTAIN SILVER". If Jim manages to get all of these letters, he will be awarded an extra life.

Jim may only use his sword to start off with, but once he collects a fairy that floats toward him in every scene, Jim will be able to shoot stars at enemies, making his kills more efficient. The maximum number of stars that he can have is six. There are other power-ups that Jim can collect in the game. These include the "clock" power-up, which gives Jim extra time; the "boot" power-up which allows Jim to jump higher; and the "coffee?" power-up, which enables Jim to shield himself from creatures until he is hit by one.

There is a boss in each scene, which he must defeat in order to proceed to the next round. There is also a certain time limit, which Jim must complete the scene before it expires. If he does not, then he will lose a life.***There are two version of this cart. The "two-mega" version was released in Canada and Europe and has all 6 levels and all the enemies mentioned in the manual. The "one-mega" version was released in the USA. It has only 4 levels and is missing many enemies. The USA game manual still describes the missing levels and enemies.

Castlequest  ASCII;Nexoft (ASCII;Bits Laboratory)1986A long time ago in a faraway land, there lived a lovely young princess named Margarita. Her beauty and grace were known throughout the land - especially to Mad Mizer, the Dark Lord of the grim Groken Castle high in the Forbidden Mountains. He had vowed to make the Princess his queen; and so, one terrible day, he sent his ghoulish helpers to capture her, and she was carried off and imprisoned in one of the hundred miserable rooms of Groken Castle. News of the kidnapping spread throughout the kingdom, and many courageous young men braved the perils of Groken Castle in an attempt to rescue the Princess - only to become hopelessly lost in the complicated maze of rooms, ensnared in one of the many treacherous traps, or foiled by Mad Mizer's deadly servants. Finally the news reached the worthy Prince Rafael, who had long loved the Princess from afar. Raising his sword to the heavens, Prince Rafael swore that nothing would keep him from her side, and set out on his Castlequest. The odds against him seemed hopeless... But legend has it that two magical fairies have been held captive in the Castle for centuries. If the Prince can find and release them to gain their help, he may yet succeed in his quest. And to rescue his fair Princess, he is prepared to face the deadly wrath of the Dark Lord himself!***This is a different game from [game=#i196277]Castle Quest[/game]***In this platform/puzzle mix you control a brave knight trying to rescue a princess which is trapped inside a huge castle. The way to the princess however is blocked by doors. Many doors. So your main objective is to collect keys with the appropriate colors to make progress. Although you start with 50 lives (at least in the US version) the game is not easy. Pixel-perfect jumping is needed and there is the constant threat that you run out of keys and trap yourself. This is also my main complaint about this game, cause it tends to become confusing and frustrating. And your only attack (with a knife) has a much too short range. As with many early ASCII Famicom/NES games this game originated on MSX homecomputers. The rooms of the castle are bigger though in the NES version (the MSX games featured only one-screen rooms). Graphics and sound get their job done but are far from being great. NESlabelimagesubject
Chester Field: Ankoku Shin e no Chousen  Vic Tokai1987"Chester Field" is a platform/action game with combat similar to [game=#7949]Zelda II The Adventure of Link[/game] mixed with typical RPG elements like leveling up, shops to buy better weapons and armor and a few spells. The game features eight levels with an overworld/castle and a complex maze, mostly containing an important object, which is needed for further progress. The game could have been good if the locations wouldn't be so confusing (much is hidden behind destroyable blocks, there are one-way doors etc.) and if the controls were better. NESlabelimageminimize

[52]***I really liked the C64 version of Commando (which C64 user doesn't remember that awesome music?), so I was really curious how the NES version would play. Commando is an early Run and Gun game, one of the genre defining games so to say, originally released in the arcades and converted to virtually every homecomputer possible. The NES version is an interesting version and playable, it even has a new feature. Throwing grenades at some places reveals otherwise hidden stairs which you can climb down and enter extra mini-rooms sometimes filled with enemies but often also having extra items in them. But the game fails to be as good as it could have been. The music doesn't drive me forward as it did in the C64 version. The graphics are adequate for a 1986 game but there is often much flickering. Sometimes enemy soldiers just disappear completely from the screen. The game has only four short levels, but despite this it is rather difficult.***Publish in Japan, 1986-09-27

Dead Island Techland;Deep Silver (Techland)2011An open sandbox zombie survival game with crafting (talking about fresh ideas) that brings both brute gory fun and great atmosphere.

Pros:
-Simple crafting-upgrade system.
-Stamina-reliant combat and movement.
-IA (specially for beings that hunt down brains)
-Drowning zombies.
-Leveling up with RPG-like characters and trees (Borderlands anyone?)

Cons:
-No animals.
-No use of extra weapons for repairing or carftfing.
-No swimming.
-Right seat wheel car.

6 of 10***Note that Dead Island does not strictly match Zombie Apocalypse genre as the zombie outbreak is limited to the island of Banoi with an excessive military quarantine making sure nothing goes in or out of there, thus the outbreak is sufficiently contained. However, none of the events in the game take place outside the containment area, giving it the overall appearance of zombie apocalypse without actually being it.***Terror. Violence. Madness. Bedlam. A holiday paradise gone mad. A tropical island turns into total chaos after a mysterious zombie outbreak. Cut off from the rest of the world, the player’s only chance to survive is to fight to the death and find a way to escape from the island.

Dead Island combines first-person action with a heavy focus on melee combat, character development and customization of a vast array of weapons. All of these gameplay features are presented in a dark story inspired by classic zombie movies with a gritty and engrossing campaign that can be played with up to four players in co-op mode.

Set in an open world tropical island, hordes of different festering zombies await players around every corner while they embark on a variety of thrilling missions through the holiday resort. With firearms and ammunition being scarce the player must rely on utilizing found items as weapons for self-defense and fight off zombie hordes in intense melee combat. A diverse range of items can be collected and will later serve to transform the player’s ordinary makeshift weapons into serious instruments of destruction.

In addition to satisfying even the most bloodthirsty action fan’s fantasy, Dead Island also features role-playing elements which allow the player to develop one of the game’s unique character classes according to their preferences, all the while learning new skills and fresh tactics during their journey through the perilous environments of the island. What’s more, anytime during a game up to four players can seamlessly join together and experience the intense combat and immersive story with cooperative gameplay.

With the all-new Chrome Engine 5 powering Dead Island, the game will use the latest installment of Techland’s acclaimed proprietary game engine, allowing the player to experience the tropical island paradise in graphical splendor with diverse environments like lush forests and detailed city environments.

* First-person melee combat
* 4-player coop
* Weapon customization

The year is 1938. James Lee Quatermain is a man of many talents, yet holding on to money isn't one of them. James is an adventurer by trade, just like his legendary great-grandfather Allan Quatermain. And he knows how to squeeze money out of this famous name of his, while at the same time despising it. Despising those who believe his great-grandfather's tales of the supernatural and those who make fun of them alike.

Accordingly, Quatermain isn't all too keen on escorting Jennifer Goodwin, an US agent and former colleague of his, to an Egyptian temple structure in order to retrieve an ancient artifact - The Heart of Atlantis. Neither does he believe in the reputed invigorating qualities of this artifact, nor does he care the least that a division of the Ahnenerbe, the Nazi department specialized in the occult, is after The Heart as well.

But life has its ways of changing one's perspective. Quatermain soon finds himself part of a hunt across the globe - from the stormy deserts of Egypt to the icy depths of the Arctic, and all the way to the steaming jungles of Guatemala. In long forgotten temple structures the thrill of the chase awakens the true adventurer in Quatermain, as he and agent Goodwin strive to be one step ahead of the Nazis and the Russians, one step closer to obtaining the Heart of Atlantis. It should be noted that the Furons see Humans as evil, backwater planet dwellers of primitive intellect, originally seen only suitable for breeding specific kind of DNA material (which Crypto-137 harvests when he can from all the shooting).
