King's Quest I  Tierra;AGDI (Tierra)2001An updated version of the remake of the original [game= King's Quest] King's Quest[/game]. That is, a remake of a remake :) Text input, except for a few key plot necessities, is replaced with point&click. Graphics are beautiful VGA. Superb music and sound (optional). And many of the original voice actors from later official King's Quest games lent their voices to this unofficial remake (also optional). Play in window or full screen, 1.60 letterboxed widescreen or anamorphic widescreen (requires a 1.33 resolution displayed on a widescreen monitor), and 320x200 or 640x400.

Like the original, this game is unfair :) So save often. However, save slots are limited to 20 at a time. A knowledge of nursery rhymes, fairytales and folktales is helpful. There are many object to find and us in the game to score points. There are usually several solutions to a problem that score a different amount of points. Misusing items will subtract points, sometimes permanently. 'Beating' the game is fairly easy, a perfect score is a bit trickier.

Easter eggs:
1. Take the goat to the middle of the screen east of the friendly elf and eat your carrot.
2. With the voice pack active, quit the game while under water and listen.
3. Listen to the sound when you use the mushroom
4. Talk to yourself until you say interesting things.
5. Read the note on every screen until it says something new.
6. Watch the rising smoke from the Witch's cauldron.
7. Use the magic mirror on yourself while using the ring
8. Look at the Rock at the base of the tree on the screen with the waterfall.
9. Look at the brush near the stump where the pouch is.
10. Save then talk to a castle guard while using the ring
11. Restore your game and talk to the other guard while using the ring
12. Keep feeding the Troll till something else happens.

There is only one instance where keyboard input is needed, this is a totally point and click driven adventure. It is not offically part of the King's Quest series, but is a remake of an official game that is. This game is also available in the Icelandic language. The protagonist is a member of the Royal Guard (a military group). I'm not sure he is highborn however. The Ubuntu tag no longer applies as newer versions of Ubuntu, by default, use MIDI and synthesis that is not automatically compatible with all AGS games. No easy instructions have yet been created to explain how to get these games to run. However, older versions work with the standard AGS for Linux instructions. But, this game can be made to run on Linux without any programming skills.

King's Quest I: Quest for the Crown Sierra On-Line1990This remake of King's Quest uses the Sierra's Creative Interpreter (SCI) engine (the same used in King's Quest IV) instead of the Adventure Game Interpreter (AGI) engine. It also featured twice the resolutions, music card support instead of the PC speaker, the story was expanded and made more linear, and lots of other details were modified.

King's Quest Collector's Edition published 1994, UPC:0-20626-83312-7, includes this version on the 1st CD.

King's Quest II: Romancing the Stones  Tierra;AGDI (Tierra)2002This is a relatively unknown game yet a masterpiece within the point and click genre and top rate among all videogames.

A notable difference in this remake is the personalization of King Graham's quest. There is no ultimatum given, no threat to the kingdom, that compels King Graham; his reasons are deeply personal. As are the motivations of nearly every character in the game. This remake presents a huge leap in maturity and seriousness rivaled only by the tone of the fairytales it references (in their pre-Grimm's incarnations). Like the fairytale originals, there's things in this game that should make you skirm and things you won't want to think about too much. But, it's still fun and contains humorous moments.***King Graham having ascended to the thrown now rules Daventry, alone. Aware of his loneliness, and when finally having it pointed out to him by a trusted official of the Kingdom, King Graham consults his Magic Mirror. The Magic Mirror shows him the remote world of Kolyma and beautiful woman held prisoner in a tower there. King Graham sets out on a romantic quest, casting aside royal privilege to mingle with a myriad of ancient and modern fairytale characters in Kolyma presented, for the most part, in their original serious and dark forms.

An updated version of the never released remake of the original King's Quest II. That is, a remake of a never released remake :) (the improved Apple IIGS version noted, but not accepted as a remake by Sierra's standards). Text input, except for a few key plot necessities, is replaced with point&click. Graphics are beautiful VGA. Superb music and sound (optional). And many of the original voice actors from later official King's Quest games lent their voices to this unofficial remake (also optional). King's Quest VII: The Princeless Bride  Sierra On-Line1994Princess Rosella is somewhat rebellious, and dreams of adventure rather than marriage. She catches a glimpse of a something magical in a pond, and dives in. Her mother, Queen Valanice follows. Valanice lands in a desert in the land of Eldritch, while Rosella finds herself transformed into a troll and engaged to be married to the King of the Trolls. As the two characters attempt to find each other, they discover that all of Eldritch is in danger. The evil sorceress Malicia has attacked or imprisoned the leaders of the different kingdoms of Eldritch, and plots to destroy the land. The action is separated into six chapters, each set primarily in a different region of Eldritch. The player alternates between Valanice and Rosella with each chapter. The two heroines travel through some of the same places during the course of the game, finally meeting up again in the end. The game also uses a smart pointer which lights up when passed over an object that can be used. Players can get or use objects and talk to characters by simply clicking on them. It featured high-resolution graphics in a style reminiscent of Disney animated films. It is also the only King's Quest game with multiple protagonists, and the only one to divide the story into "chapters." It's also the only game in the King's Quest series to feature Queen Valanice in a major role, and also the only one in which King Graham is not shown or mentioned at all.***

Editor's notes: Yes, Sierra actually specified a 13" monitor as required. Will run on PowerPC Macs using 68040 emulation and AV Macs but doing so requires as much as 3 MB of additional RAM. 5000K RAM is allocated to this game when run. The game will not run if this much free memory is unavailable. Some Macs may require increasing to 5200K or more, especial on PPC Macs. This game is compatible with General MIDI devices and MT 32 devices. In lieu of these, the SoundDriver.drv software driver will suffice. RAM Doubler or virtual memory will not allow Macs with less than 8MB to run this game and these utilities may even need to be disable if the game experiences memory related issues. Reducing disk cache to 32K, disabling RAM disk, and disabling 32-bit addressing can help with memory issues. Modern Memory Manager should be disable on PPC Macs

King's Quest: Quest for the Crown Sierra On-Line1984King's Quest was created for the PCjr and Sierra staked the company on it. The PCjr was canceled, but, Tandy cloned the design and King's Quest instead, debuted as a Tandy 1000 pack-in game specifically designed for Tandy's 16 color graphics and 3 voice sound. This entry is about the later MS-DOS specific version with additional sound and graphics options. Eventually there was a VGA patch. There was a much later DOS remake with another engine.***King's Quest Collector's Edition published 1994, UPC:0-20626-83312-7, includes this version on the 1st CD.***King's Quest I
