Dwarf Fortress  Bay 12 Games2006Dwarf Fortress is a single-player fantasy game. You can control a dwarven outpost or an adventurer in a randomly generated, persistent world.

Although Dwarf Fortress is still in a work in progress, many features have already been implemented.

*The world is randomly generated with distinct civilizations spanning centuries of detailed history, hundreds of towns, caves and regions with various wildlife.
*The world persists as long as you like, over many games, recording historical events and tracking changes.
*Command your dwarves as they search for wealth in the mountain.
---Craft treasures and furniture from many materials and improve these objects with precious metals, jewels and more.
---Defend yourself against attacks from hostile civilizations, the wilderness, the depths, the dead and creatures of the night.
---Trade for all manner of exotic goods with your neighbors.
---Establish a barony and support the nobility as they make demands of your populace.
---Keep your dwarves happy and read their thoughts as they work and relax.
---Z coordinate allows you to dig out fortresses with multiple levels. Build towers or conquer the underworld.
---Build floodgates to divert water for farming or to drown your adversaries... and don't forget the magma!
---Surgery, sutures, splints, crutches and more: care for your wounded dwarves instead of leaving them to fend for themselves.
---Retire your fortress, then unretire it after spending time playing other roles in the world.
---Honey, wax, pottery, windmills, waterwheels, soap, plaster, wool, eggs, dyes, cheese, glass, animal training, and much much more...
*Play an adventurer and explore, quest for glory or seek vengeance.
---Meet adversaries from previous games.
---Recruit people to come with you on your journey.
---Explore without cumbersome plot restrictions -- thriving capitals, villages, catacombs, labyrinths, bandit camps, caves and more!
---Seamlessly wander the world or travel more rapidly on the region map and in underground tunnels.
---Travel by day and search for a place to shelter as night falls.
---Listen to rumors and help out town and civilization leaders.
---Earn a reputation as a hero, friend, soldier, enemy, thug, etc. with the various civilizations in the world.
---Retire and meet your old characters. Bring them along on an adventure with a new character or reactivate them and play directly.
---Z coordinate allows you to move between twisting underground caverns and scale structures, fighting adversaries above and below. Climb, jump and sprint!
---Stealth system with vision arcs which also respects vegetation density and other factors.
---Use signs like shoe impressions and animal tracks to hunt and avoid danger.
---Steal a mummy's treasure or learn the secrets of life and death at a necromancer's tower.
---Visit your retired fortresses and ask your dwarves to join you on adventures.
*The combat model uses skills, body parts, individual tissues, material properties, aimed attacks, wrestling, one-time opportunities, charging and dodging between squares, bleeding, pain, nausea, various poison effects and much more. Attacks and other movements extend over several instants, allowing you to deliberately catch enemy blows or plan your counter-attack.
*Hundreds of animals and other monsters, including many that are randomly generated for each world.
*Multi-tile climbable trees and many, many kinds of plants. Fruit, flowers and falling leaves.
*A dynamic weather model tracks wind, humidity and air masses to create fronts, clouds, rain storms and blizzards.
*Over two hundred rock and mineral types are incorporated into the world, placed in their proper geological environments.
*Add new creatures, weapons, plants, metals and other objects via modifiable text files.
*Extended ASCII character set rendered in 16 colors (including black) as well as 8 background colors (including black).

The game's release date should be modified to the date on which "feature complete" version is released (when and if such a thing is released).***The game has two modes, adventure mode which resembles any rogue-like game and the dwarf fortress strategic mode where you build and maintain the fortress and its dwarves.***2002 Development started
2006 First public release

At the time of writing, the game is still in alpha. We (UVL management) should consider this "finished" (as in, set the release date for) when the game has implemented everything everything in the core components and reqs described in this page. However, unlike many other games listed as "in development" here on UVL, Dwarf Fortress is quite playable already.

Minecraft Mojang2011Minecraft is a game about breaking and placing blocks. At first, people built structures to protect against nocturnal monsters, but as the game grew players worked together to create wonderful, imaginative things.

It can also be about adventuring with friends or watching the sun rise over a blocky ocean. It’s pretty. Brave players battle terrible things in The Nether, which is more scary than pretty. You can also visit a land of mushrooms if it sounds more like your cup of tea.******Following concepts were removed with some versions:
* healing items (1.8 - re-added with 1.9)

Minecraft Mojang2011***GPL license is likely wrongly applied to this:
Do not distribute anything I've made. This includes the client and the server software for the game. This also includes modified versions of anything I've made.
source: http://www.minecraft.net/copyright.jsp

Also on the former DRM tag:
Once you've bought the game, it's yours. No DRM.
source: http://www.minecraft.net/prepurchase.jsp***Unlike the Windows and Mac versions, the Linux version is distributed as plain Java runtime (.jar archive) which is not Linux specific at all and can be run on any other platform with Java VM.***Go prospecting for materials to build game world bricks and more advanced items (such as minecarts). Fend off enemy creatures. Also grow crops if you like.***Online play is free, offline play requires purchasing online play. The game is GPL and source code is freely available (so paying is not strictly required for anyone who modifies and compiles the code themselves. This is perfectly legal, though somewhat inconvenient)

MSRP: $49.95

Your trapped in a the robot city, Robotropolis. You must navigate the city by designing and soldering logic circuits into discarded robots. You'll need to find batteries, battery chargers (unless you work extremely efficiently), keys, tokens, sensors, and microchips, among other things. But more important than any items you find in the game is the item resting between your shoulders, your brain. The puzzles in this game have no absolute solution (but hints and parts are sometimes provided for a solution predetermined by the game designers), instead you must design the solutions that you think will work. The unofficial sequel to [game=#20413]Rocky's Boots[/game]. Uses a much more advanced engine to drive very, very complex logic circuitry and animations. Although the puzzles in the game don't come close to needing the complexity this game is capable of delivering. It is educational, just don't tell anyone because this game is way to much fun to spoil.

In the Sewer level, you can find initials of 8 of the authors.

There are 4 sides to this program! Depending on what version you have, all sides of the disks may contain useful chips. Check'em out.

The copy protection of this game will prevent the soldering iron from working (even if legitimately used). The disks are a modified DOS 3.3 format. Enter B942:18 in the Apple's monitor program, copy the disks, then Enter B942:36. Edit the disks and change $000FD2 and $040EEB to 38. Now you have disks suitable to dump for emulation.

Robot Odyssey I: Escape from Robotropolis  The Learning Company (The Learning Company;Computerware)1984The in-game menu uses the title "Robot Odyssey 1"***Somehow, with a vastly superior CPU and more memory, this is a cut down slower version than the Apple ][ version. There are 4 chips instead of 8 and fewer gates in the toolbox. And it's slow. But it is still Robot Odyssey and still awesome. Just a slower awesome.

The slowness must be a result of being framesynced to the Coco's infamous graphic hardware bottleneck.

Robot Odyssey Rewired author2009This is a java script and assembly game engine remake for Robot Odyssey v1.1 for DOS. It runs a web browsers. Some interface features and graphics enhancements are added but the game is otherwise identical to the DOS version 1.1 (As an example, some of the clipping cheats are removed in v1.1 for DOS and so RORw doesn't have them).

In the Sewer level, you can find initials of 8 of the level designers. No doubt this is was included because of Warren Robinett's famous easter egg in Atari Adventure. There is also a secret room in the game where text concerning Warren Robinett and Rocky's Boots is shown.

Terraria Re-Logic;Headup Games (Re-Logic)2011An open sandbox metroidvania with some crafting and base building, calling it "a 2D Minecraft" is an oversimplification of its formula, way more focused in rapid action and platforming.

Pros:
-Great atmosphere and music.
-Amazing sense of wonder.
-Challenging events and biomes.
-Variety of NPCs and enemies.
-Subtle cross-referenced easter eggs that actually improve the game and don't seem forced.
-Big depths with many cave systems.
-2D side scroll eases exploration, making it less confusing.
-Incredibly well done crafting tree and progress system.
-Bosses.
-Player and map are interdependent (you can play as much worlds as you wish with the same character)

Cons:
-Addictive as hello without o.
