Age of Empires  Microsoft (Ensemble Studios)1997In Age of Empires, players are able to manage a tribe with their mouse. Command them to build houses, docks, farms, and temples. The player advances their civilization through time by learning new skills. The game allows the player to advance through the Ages: The Paleolithic (old Stone Age), the Neolithic (new Stone Age, or the Tool Age), the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age. If the player would rather get away from the historical aspect, the game offers a random terrain generator and a custom scenario builder.

The game has four resources: food, obtained by either hunting, foraging, fishing, or farming; wood, which must be logged by hand; stone, which must be mined; and gold, which can either be mined or obtained through trade with other players.

As a real-time war game, Age of Empires naturally revolves around gathering resources and producing units.***

[Box blurb]***Worlds collide in Armies of Exigo, a fantasy RTS where the boundaries of the battlefield are broken and war is waged both above and below the ground. This game takes strategy to new depths as elves, beasts, knights, and creatures of the darkness are locked in an epic battle for survival.

In the world of Exigo, where peace and prosperity have reigned for years, the empires of man and beast faces their greatest threat yet. A sinister force known as The Fallen has awaken to strike where the inhabitants of this world least expect - from underground.

Users will take control of massive armies, wage wars in the forests and river valleys of the surface, then descend into the caverns and catacombs of the underworld to face off against the dark evil.

Armies on all sides will have the ability to delve deep underground to travel unseen by foes or borrow up to the surface to unleash powerful attacks on unsuspecting enemies. The gamer must devise never before deployed strategies for combat and defense as attacks can come from all directions.

Conquer as the heavily fortified Empire and control an army of knights, dwarves, elves and gnomes. Ravage the plains with the nomadic Beasts, leading tribes of ogres, trolls and other fantastic creatures. Emerge from deep to consume the world of light with The Fallen – a powerful force of dark elves, fallen warriors, swarming insects and other horrific creatures of the dark.

Engage in an epic three-part single player campaign and save the world of Exigo from the evil that threatens to plunge the world into darkness. Or go online for massive multiplayer skirmishes with up to eight players striving to conquer the surface and underworld. Success can only be achieved through a balance of military might and strategic alliances.

Avaneya KshatraTBAThe year is 2082. Billions on Earth had starved to death, with the majority remnants displaced, malnourished and impoverished. Rising acidic oceans, devoid of almost all life, had engulfed entire cities. Once fertile land had since been transformed into barren wasteland of endless stretches of desert. Forests had vanished, innumerable species wiped out, vexed tectonic plates sought new equilibrium, and the last functioning oil refineries were days from expiration. Entire city blocks had collapsed into craters once supported by delicate natural water systems. Epidemics, poverty, and food riots were rampant worldwide. Mass media, corporate news, and secular materialism, however, remained immutable.

All three of the world's nations coveted what little remained. The fractional reserve private central banks continued indirectly financing all sides. Awaiting the predicted defaulting on their loans, the central banks rapidly mobilized, commercialized, and patented virtually every remaining resource through their subsidiaries as collateral.

Mankind's dire state and rejection of lifestyle reformation, coupled with discoveries of opulent reserves of Martian natural resources revealed via telemetry, prompted the first manned mission to Mars to investigate. Despite tireless efforts and all of humanity's advances in science and engineering, the crew were afforded sufficient fuel to their destination, though not of return.

Given the inherent dangers and nature of the mission, the crew selected were unmarried, ex-military airborne paratroopers, learned, and of diverse academic backgrounds. All accepted the moderate risks of the countless ways to die.

The mission, financed by the public, championed under the colours of science at its finest, they were tasked with finding sustenance for Earth for the betterment of all humanity. The crew, however, found themselves disillusioned mid route when they learnt unintentionally of the mission's genuine purpose to exploit the Martian materials to entertain the designs of a terrestrial select few.

The costly partial terraformation of the biosphere initiated remotely from Earth decades prior required the already naturally occurring Martian resources, and thus could not be repeated again to replenish Earth's new bread basket. The crew deliberated extensively and finally chose not to facilitate a repetition of history in establishing the groundwork for laying yet another planet to waste. They abandoned their mission objectives and, perceiving Earth as a hopeless write-off, abandoned it too as they made an attempt to stand their ground in establishing a new way of sustainable life.

They educated their progeny with the hard terrestrial lessons learnt. Now as they grow in number on Mars, they must use their knowledge to protect themselves from deforestation, epidemics, irrational partisan politics, broken neoclassical economics, overpopulation, flooding, social injustice, bureaucracy, and more. Here their education began with the fundamental premise that nothing is disparate.

However, having abandoned Earth's utterly enraged powers that be, the colonists were confident their time of isolation was limited. Within the coming decades, the colonists expect the arrival of avant-garde private defence contractors to ensure the security of coming industry in finishing what had never been started.

Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars  Electronic Arts (EA Los Angeles)2007CnC3 is probably the hardest strategy game I know, and not because the AI is that good, but because it cheats so much. Even on the so called easy difficulty the game is frustratingly hard to even barely win (later) missions. Besides that I still like it, especially the revised GDI and the all new Scrin faction. As a game I would not recommend this to anyone but the masochistic players or diehard Tiberium series fans.***Latest version: 1.09 (as of ?)***March, 2047. A massive nuclear fireball explodes high in the night sky, marking the dramatic beginning to the Third Tiberium War and long-awaited return of the most groundbreaking Real-time Strategy franchise (RTS) of all time.

The critically-acclaimed Command & Conquer (C&C) series returns with Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars (C&C 3). Setting the standard for the future of RTS gaming once more, C&C 3 takes you back to where it all began—the Tiberium Universe.

In 2047, Tiberium has blanketed the Earth, which is now divided into zones based on the level of Tiberium infestation. Pristine Blue Zones represent 20% of the planet's surface and are the last refuge of the civilized world. Partially habitable Yellow Zones make up 50% of the planet's surface; most of the world's population lives in these war-torn and ecologically ravaged areas. The remaining 30% of the planet is uninhabitable, a Tiberium wasteland swept by violent Ion Storms. Red Zones are like the surface of an Alien planet.

The infamous Kane has returned to lead the Brotherhood of Nod in a massive global assault on the Global Defense Initiative and the few remaining Blue zones left on the planet. Only you can stop him. The fate of humanity – and the planet – is in your hands.

Featuring state-of-the-art, next-generation graphics, an epic story with live action, full-motion video sequences, and the classic fast-paced C&C style of play, C&C 3 sets the standard for the single player RTS experience.

When you decide to test your skills online, a suite of truly innovative features, such as the ability to transform online battles into a spectator sport, unfold.

Welcome back, Commander.

Command & Conquer: Generals Electronic Arts (EA Pacific)2003A new chapter in the Command & Conquer universe, set somewhere in the 2020s, pits three sides for global domination: the United States of America, the People's Republic of China and the Global Liberation Army (GLA).

Generals features real world (renamed or slightly altered) weapons combined with quasi-high-tech ones, new control schemes and a fast-paced multiplayer. Generals is the first game in the Command & Conquer series not to include FMV or pre-rendered cutscenes between missions, and was also the first C&C game without the Westwood Studios label (although the development studio was initially called Westwood Pacific before being merged into EA Pacific). It uses a full 3D environment powered by the SAGE engine, a modified version of the W3D engine previously seen in C&C: Renegade.

The core gameplay differs somewhat from other games in the series, a move done in order to modernize the formula. First off, construction yards are absent, as structures are built by dozers for the USA and China, and workers for the GLA. The sidebar is replaced with the bottom bar, and support powers are "purchased" with leveling up as a general, which is done through participating in combat. For the first time in the series, each factory-type structure (barracks, war factory, airfield...) has its own build queue, in the same fashion as in Blizzard's RTS titles before it, instead of having a shared one like in the previous C&C games. Upgrades are available for the first time in the series as well, bringing improvements to units and structures. Everything is paid for in advance instead of having credits slowly drain as the object is constructed.***

Command & Conquer: Red Alert  Virgin (Westwood Studios)1996Red Alert is one of the most successful and well known real-time strategy, following on the first Command & Conquer released in 1995. Game mechanisms and strategies has not been changed - you have to build a base, produce combat units and you harvest resources. The story, however, is distinctly different - it is not about two enemy organizations, but you can play either for allies or for Soviets. These two sides battle for the fate of planet Earth itself. The game has a variety of missions: from conventional forestry, through missions on the water and also indoor missions, where you have to use only infantry.***

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2  Westwood (Westwood Pacific)2000Red Alert 2 takes place a few years after the events in the original Red Alert. The Allies, victorious in their battles against Joseph Stalin and his Soviet army, have restored peace throughout the Europe and have rebuilt its decimated economy and infrastructure. To oversee the Soviet reconstruction, they have installed their own puppet dictator in the place of Stalin: General Romanov. Outraged at Stalin's failure, Romanov is haunted by memories of his homeland burning and Allied troops marching through his country's streets. He's thirsty for vengeance, and unbeknownst to his Allied puppeteers, Romanov has been mobilizing the World Socialist Alliance into a giant military machine for years and is now only biding his time, waiting for the opportunity to strike. When a civil war breaks out in Mexico, Romanov makes his move. Terrified Allies activate the defensive system and declare nuclear war on Russia. Unfortunately all systems are disabled and the US's entire arsenal of nuclear ICBMs remain dormant, useless, in their silos. On the other side Romanov drops in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and all nearby countries. And worse, people who live there feel weird headaches and some have even turned against the Allies. Intelligence sources confirm the fears: Romanov has developed a frightening technology that affects man and machine alike; specifically, he has created psychically enhanced troops that can attack with a simple thought. Dawn of War II  THQ (Relic Entertainment)2009It’s the 41st Millennium in the Sub-Sector Aurelia – a cluster of worlds on the edge of the galaxy – where a battle of epic proportions is about to commence. Ancient races will clash across the planets that dot this sector of space, battling for the greatest of stakes – not only for control of Sub-Sector Aurelia – but the fate of each race.

With a focus on fast-action RTS gameplay, Dawn of War II brings to life the science fiction universe of Warhammer 40,000 like never before. Experience the intimate brutality of battle as you play through your chosen race’s epic campaign. Clash with the enemies on battlefield ablaze with visceral melee and ranged combat. Lead and develop your squads from raw recruits into the most battle hardened veterans in the galaxy. Also included is The Last Stand, a co-operative game mode featuring user controlled heroes fighting waves of enemies.***Deviating a lot from the first Dawn of War, this RTS plays more like a tactical-action (Commandos) than a strategy game (even with is touches of Command and Conquer)

Pros:
-Great controls, even to seem easy to use many units in the field.
-Equipment and leveling up: brings some roleplay elements in the development of your team.
-Tyranids.
-3 game modes: campaign (Space Marines cleansing places), coop defense (pick your hero and prepare to withstands waves of enemies) and multiplayer (a mix between a hero RTS and a MOBA)

Cons:
-Too many times soldiers adopt stupid covers (like being in the two sides of a trench)

6 of 10***DoW2 is perhaps best defined as tactical RPG than strategy RPG, with RPG elements mostly covering only how good your characters are doing their stuff and the otherwise equipment based system. There's no role-playing to speak of, though.***Tagline: "Your slavery to the False Emperor ends today!"***Latest version: 2.2.0 (as of 2010-04-??)

Version history:
* 1.3.2 (2009-05-14)***Although the devs/publishers touted a lot about new approach to RTS with the title, the only thing I noticed to be truly new (for the type of RTS DoW2 is) was that your troops couldn't be killed for real. Few units (4 squads total in this case) to somewhat non-linear tactical missions have been done before, although none before in my experience are so lenient on the matter. Your squads can't be killed since only the squad leader is actually important and he can only be knocked unconscious. If all squads become unconscious, emergency evac is pulled and the squads and their leaders are back to full strength as if nothing happened. You lose the turn in the overworld meta-game with a lost battle, but that's hardly anything new. The squad leaders gain experience and level up occasioally, which can be spent on very few areas of interest, and they can be given new equipment which most of the time just makes them more powerful, resilient and generally more efficient.

Each map has several teleport beacons scattered around where squads can be re-inforced, 2 secondary objectives which can be completed, and the primary objective. These are invariably(?) placed at the 4 corners of the tactical map. You can perform multiple attacks on single turn if you perform sufficiently well in a battle, but this is usually unlikely on harder difficulty settings. Each map also holds a boss at the primary objective location who usually has 200 times (and more) as much health as the more regular units from the tougher end. On harder difficulty settings these become rather dreary as you spend most of the time resuscitating unconscious squad leaders and doing round-trips to teleport beacons for re-inforcements than actually fighting the bosses.

In conclusion, the base tactical gameplay is interesting like in any other tactical game, but all value is lost from the fact that you can practically never lose and success in missions is purely based on how well you manage to keep at least one squad conscious long enough to get the others back up, beyond that, all your great tactical plans are pointless except to reduce the number of times you need to get the squads back up.***2009-01-19 gone gold
