Moria | author | ? | While moria is in Ubuntu repositories, this version often fails to run on older Ubuntu based distributions. Compiling from the sources in the Ubuntu repositories seems to have the same result. But the moria package from the Debian repos runs and compiles fine. moria from Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty repos works.***Deep Within the Mines of Moria the Balrog awaits. You are tasked with defeating it. Moria is obviously based on Tolkien's works. Moria has other Tolkien creatures and characters and some Dungeon's & Dragons inspired content also (D&D itself was heavily inspired by Tolkien's works). The player may choose a Human, Half-Elf, Elf, Halfling, Gnome, Dwarf, Half-Orc, or Half-Troll character and a Warrior, Mage, Priest, Rogue, Ranger, or Paladin class (note some races cannot choose some classes). Delve deeper for the best treasures, but going deeper is riskier; one slip and the protagonist dies, permanently, no resurrections, savegame deleted. No going back to an earlier save either, doing so marks your file and all records of your character will vanish on game over or winning. Moria is based on the design of Rogue (it is a clone that shares no code or data with Rogue) but has notable variations in gameplay. Most significant is the 6 shops on the surface that the protagonist may visit to buy and sell equipment, supplies, armor, weapons, scrolls, books, potions, and magical items. The surface is only one screen in size, not really an 'overworld' like in Angband and other roguelikes based on this game. UNIX Moria also served as inspiration for the design of Diablo. Moria was created using VMS Pascal ("Moria") when Robert Alan Koeneke and Jimmey Wayne Todd found that Rogue, their addiction at the time, was not available on VAX-11/780 minicomputers. UNIX Moria (umoria) is a port of "Moria" written in C language. Many subsequent ports and forks of "Moria" were based on umoria. The original license permitting sharing and modification but not commercial use. At some point, an agreement was reached by every person who ever maintained Moria to release its source code under the GPL license. Linux umoria has since become the standard version of sorts and is even called "Moria" by the current maintainer. Although, it is still a actively maintained VAX/VMS game. | labelimagesubject |

Magocracy | author | 2004 | Living on the streets of Persis has been rough, but it has certainly made you strong. Where else but in the Magocratic Kingdom of Persis could even a simple street urchin learn such arcane secrets as you have? Your basic knowledge of conjuration has kept you well fed, and never wanting for water. A few hard-earned enchantments keep you safe. A bit of sorcery keeps the darkness away. Summoning has brought you at least some form of friendship. You have even begun to dabble in scrying, though your insights are limited to the space of your own being. A few days ago, news spread through the kingdom that the King, Ardashir I was dying, and because Ardashir II had recently died in a tragic dragon feeding accident, he was left with no heir. A decree was made that a tournament would be held to select a new Mage to inherit the throne. You decided that the tournament would be interesting to observe. No doubt there would be many magi there. Perhaps some of them could be persuaded to teach you a spell or two! When you arrived in the throne room of Ardashir Castle, you were only one of six magi in attendance, including the King. The first was introduced as Balthazar, a very old man dressed in fine white robes. He has served as King Ardashir’s seer and adviser for nearly a century. It is said that he knows everything that happens in the kingdom at all times. No peasant or Lord dare ever even speak ill of the King, for fear they are being spied on by the old Seer. That, combined with Ardashir’s immense magical power and military genius has made the Magocracy of Persis the most powerful and fertile kingdom in the known world. The second, General Loge has led King Ardashir’s army in all of its most glorious battles. He will undoubtedly go down in history as the finest War Mage that has ever seen a battle. People still speak of the time he bested Amputar the Barbarian in melee combat by calling forth a sword of flame. The third was Lilith, Queen of the neighboring kingdom of Partha. It is widely known in magical circles that she came by the position by using her enchantments to enslave and then murder the previous Monarch. The last mage to receive a proper introduction was Rhiannon, daughter of Amputar, Warchief of the Barbarians of the Northlands, and the Druidess Ethnea. It is said that there is no greater conjuror in all the world. She can feed, shelter, and provide drink to her entire tribe with her magic alone. She is also fierce in battle, skilled with a quarterstaff, and able to call up vines, stones, and earthquakes in order to defend her people. Ardashir turned to you and said, "And this appears to be [Player], a low-level street mage." Suddenly, a plume of violet smoke erupted in the middle of the room. From it emerged a petite woman with almond shaped eyes and light brown skin. Ardashir looked shocked for a moment, but quickly regained his composure. He introduced her as Uzume, a summoner from the east. "You are all here," began Ardashir, "to compete for the title of Monarch of Persis. Though I have no doubt what some of you would do with such a title." He glared at Lilith. "The constitution of the Magocracy of Persis states that all Lords and landowners must be Magi, and that the most powerful Mage must be chosen for the throne, should the Monarch fail to provide an heir of his own bloodline. My seer, Balthazar has informed me that the stars leave no doubt that my 240 year old life will be cut short within the space of three days. Far be it from me to argue with the heavens. But how shall we determine who is the most powerful mage? I have devised a fool-proof method. You will all stay here, in this castle, until one of you proves victorious. " With that, the great brass doors of the castle slammed shut, and Ardashir vanished in a cloud of crimson smoke. The voice of King Ardashir boomed from the very walls of the castle: "I will transport you to your guest quarters. Let the contest begin!" There was another cloud of smoke, and that’s when you found yourself in this cozy bedroom. | labelimagesubject |

Meritous | Asceai | 2007 | It's psionic Robotron with maps, multiple rooms, teleportation, and upgrades. [Zerothis]***" Far below the surface of the planet is a secret. A place of limitless power. Those that seek to control such a utopia will soon bring an end to themselves. " MERITOUS is a top-view dungeon crawl action/adventure game. As MERIT, a PSI user, your task is to investigate the Orcus Dome, an ancient underground shrine. In your way are the shadowy creatures that wander the shrine. Using your PSI circuit, you must cut through any that come between you and your goal. PSI is a powerful, imprecise force. Often viewed as a form of modern magic, PSI can be weilded to a limited extent by beings (see PSI users) that have an unusual level of mental awareness. PSI exists as a flow that can be fashioned into a single-use tool for the weilder to use. As PSI is very difficult to shape precisely, PSI users often settle for crude, uneconomical solutions to problems. For example, using PSI as an attacking weapon by draining off a large amount of it from the surrounding area and unleashing it in one go. Or using PSI as a protective shield by concentrating a large amount of it in one area. Where PSI actually comes from is unknown, however there seems to be only a limited amount in the atmosphere at any one time. While PSI is generally used by gathering it from the area around the PSI user, some advanced PSI users have worked out ways of gathering and storing large quantities of it. Some areas are naturally much richer in PSI than others. PSI seems to be found in greater quantities when one is underground, for example. PSI users are beings that have the mental capacity to consciously use PSI. Any species is capable of producing PSI users, though by far human PSI users are the most common. PSI users vary wildly in ability, with the rarest and most powerful able to accomplish great feats. It is also not uncommon for PSI users to become more or less powerful over time. Theories exist that continual exposure to and use of PSI increases one's competence, while disuse can cause it to stagnate. The Orcus Dome is a structure located deep within the planet's crust. The internal structure seems to be both crafted and organically grown. It is made up of a number of tightly-woven rooms. The structure is unusual in that it seems to have been made for the precise purpose of gathering and concentrating PSI. The walls that divide the rooms carry PSI gathered from the planet and channel it into a single, very strong flow of PSI. The discovery of the Dome has been a point of contention among PSI users, most of whom want to use the large reserves of the Dome to enhance their own PSI usage. Eventually, the majority of PSI users agreed to ration out use of the Dome to both ensure the existing reserves would last as long as possible and to make sure that each PSI user would receive a fair allocation. For several years, there was no problem with the ongoing use of the Orcus Dome to provide PSI. However, for some reason, the PSI extracted from the Dome began to behave strangely. It worked unpredictably, and made controlling the PSI very difficult. After one PSI user was killed as a result of this, a decision was made to abandon using the Orcus Dome for PSI. Not happy with this decision, one PSI user, MERIT, decided to use his own reserves of PSI to ethereally warp into the Dome itself to find out what the problem was and restore the Dome to its original state. | labelimagesubject |
