Final Fantasy VII  Square1997Final Fantasy VII has quickly become one of the best-selling Role Playing games of all time. Combining fully polygonal characters with pre-rendered backgrounds and a stirring musical score by Nobuo Uematsu, Final Fantasy VII is a worthwhile addition to any RPG collection. The story centers on the young mercenary Cloud Strife, who is fighting against the evil Shinra, Inc. Along the way, he meets an unforgettable cast of characters such as his childhood friend Tifa Lockhart and the grumpy pilot Cid Highwind. All together, it is an unforgettable and engrossing single-player game that can last for over 60 hours!***

[27]***Final Fantasy VII, is one of the best game avalaible for the PSX, the graphics are impressive, the sound Incredible, has more than 1 hour of Full motion Video, and the best of all the storyline is amazing, superb, if you like the RPG the you must have This game. And the VIII too.***This is personally my least favourite Final Fantasy. They did well with the conversion to 3D, but I found the lack of decent story, the bad translation, the below average graphics etc. to be quite a turn off while playing. However, on the flip side of the coin, the spell effects are unrivalled by any other game of its time. The Materia system was an interesting devlopment, but all in all the game is too unbalanced to make it a truly enjoyable experience.***As far as I'm concerned, I think the complete opposite. The graphics were in no way bad for PSX at that time. The combat system was even more balanced than in V or VI, while the story is so huge as to draw you in and flash through the amazing 30 hours of gameplay. Oh and the translation is no worse than most other Japanese RPGs, the PC version tidied this up a bit I think. Plus Sephiroth's sword is kick-butt.***Witness the birth of the 3D RPG. Well, not quite, but a gigantic game with an incredible storyline, coupled with real-time action combat that had be honed through 6 previous games. A favourite instantly, this game brought RPGs out of Japan and selling widely in the West for the first time.***This game was one of the most enveloping games I have ever played. The story was decent (to say the least), and the musical score was heartwarming. I will remember it forever.
[DeviantBlade]***FF7 is seriously overrated, and has produced more fanboys/fangirls than I'd care to count. However it's not all bad, it's pretty decent.
Just not as godly as some would make it out to be.
[Haoie]***I agree with Haoie (above). Actually, got to like the second or third disc and stopped playing. The mini-games and all the damn little secrets were starting to wear me out. I give it credit for being the RPG that brought Japanese RPGs to the masses in the West, but that's about it.
[cjlee001]***Lack of story?! That man seems to not know what a good storyline is... I love this game. If I could play it in my sleep I would...

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night  Konami (KCE Tokyo)1997The legendary horror action revives. Players must not only beat the Count Dracula, but also explore a vast devil castle and unravel the mystery. A map exploration type action game appeared in PS One Books!***

[27]***As a son of Dracula, your destiny is to end the vampire bloodline. In Castlevania, Symphony of the Night, your challenge is to solve the mystery as to why Richter Belmont, the hero of the first game (and descendant of the original Castlevania hero, Simon), has mysteriously vanished.
You will challenge over 140 different enemies, bosses, and ghastly creatures as you explore Dracula's castle. Your bag of tricks contains many magical spells that can transform you info a bat, a wolf, or ethereal mist along with many hidden weapons that you can find along the way. This game has lots of levels and will keep you challenged for a very long time!***One of the gems among the PSX game collection, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night brings a style of gameplay unseen sence Super Metroid. One of the only side-scrolling games for PSX, this game takes you through not one, but TWO of Dracula's castles as his son, Alucard. Added with this game are elements of an RPG, exp, levels, different weapons and armors etc. A true classic.***A very fun game with a lot of great music and backgrounds (check out the outside of the Clock Tower)! An interesting (though predictable) storyline and free travel through the castle make this one of the most innovative Castlevanias. It's right up there close to Castlevania 3.
[trevor belmont]***The best Castlevania game I have come across, bar none. The rawness of some of the backdrops earlier on in the game does nothing to dispel my suspicion that this game was originally intended for a different format, most likely Megadrive or SNES. It seems the game was ten ported over to the Plastation somewhere in development, as the the graphical extravegance increases the more you progress.
Completely unlike the superb Castlevania 4 on the SNES (arguably the second best Castlevania game) Playstation Dracula bears more in common with the Mega Drive conversion in terms of game structure and layout. A mammoth quest, with some lavish backdrops and set pieces, the game is topped off with and stiring musical score which even tops the SNES suite of themes (and thats saying something.) Univerally ignored by th mass public on launch due to its 2 imensional roots, this sprawling Metroid - esque adventure won many fans in the hardcore sector, and this game along with the original Silent Hill and Pro Evolution Soccer demonstrated Konami's 32 - bit prowess at its peak - they always mster any platform they develop for through time. One final note.
If you are searching for this game in its original format, the original pckaging comes complete with a bonus game art material together with a superb Castlevania game music CD demonstration all the various themes across the many formats throughout the ages. Also, try placing the actual game CD in your Hi - Fi. Rest assured, it wont damage your equipment!

Final Fantasy VIII  Square1999Ultimate character customization "Junction system" Junction system is G. F. (Summoned Beast, Guardian Force) is a system that strengthens abilities by junctioning items (other than items such as items and weapons) to characters.
In addition, remember the junction abilities (attack power junction, defense power junction etc.), you can further enhance the character by junctioning magic (Thunder, Fire etc.) to its abilities. In other words, you can customize characters indefinitely by combining character × abilities x magic.***Final Fantasy VIII, the sequel to Squaresoft's first PlayStation RPG, doesn't feature any of the characters from the original, but it does continue to deliver great gameplay. The story this time centers on Squall Leonhart, a young man in the military who is soon pulled into an adventure that spans the globe. Along the way, other characters can be recruited, ranging from the always-hyper Selphie to the egotistical Irvine. Nobuo Uematsu, who has composed the music for every Final Fantasy game, again scores the music. Featuring 3D characters and pre-rendered backgrounds, Final Fantasy VIII is one of the most impressive looking games ever.***

[27]***FF8 is the most controversial from 7, 8 and 9. This is due to the radically different gameplay system. Examples of this include enemies that level with you, requiring component parts to make new weapons, and junctioning magic to make attributes higher. Personally, I loved it.
[Haoie]***This is, without a doubt, the worst of the final fantasies. No armor, No shopping for weapons, An extremely annoying system for aquiring gil... These all together could be overlooked, even with the so-so graphics.
The Real Killer, though, is the main character. Squall is nothing but an uncaring, insensitive, pompous, conceited, jerk. The fact that he 'gets better' later in the game doesn't matter... If you don't want to get there with him in the first place.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Eidos (Crystal Dynamics)1999Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver pushes the limits of adventure gaming with incredibly fluid graphics and realistic environments. Battle five different clans of vampires as you explore a vast 3D world dominated by a ruthless dynasty. Master complex puzzles with your unprecedented ability to interact with objects. Also features seamless game play, No load times, Grim gothic story supported with full-motion animation, and in-game cinematic events and compelling voice-over.***
[32]***
[27]***It is one thousand years after Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. Raziel, once a mighty vampire and lieutenant of Kain, rises from eternal banishment where Kain put him out of jealous rage. Now, after having been freed by the Elder God, Raziel is out to free the world from the dreaded vampire clans and to destroy Kain himself!
The shadows of Nosgoth is a vast 3D world packed with deadly creatures, amazing graphics, and spectacular special effects. During his quest, Raziel survives by feeding on the souls of the undead and as Raziel defeats his enemies, he gains abilities and weapons that will allow him to ultimately challenge Kain himself.***Several hundreds of years after Kain decided to damn Nosgoth, he is now the Master of Nosgoth. He has 6 vampire lieutenants, one of which he will punish for an apparent reason of jealousy of the lieutenant developing a dark gift before the Master.

The lieutenant, Raziel, is condemned to destruction by being cast in the Lake of the Dead, but he is somehow saved from total annihilation by an unknown entity called the Elder God. He then vows vengeance against his former master, but when he returns to the material world he finds that much has changed.

This game is fully 3D and has been wrongly compared to Tomb Raider. The controls are actually good and precise, the 3D engine was the best of its time with very large and detailed environments. Raziel is no longer a typical vampire: instead of drinking blood, he devours souls, and has actually become a vampire hunter. He kills vampires by various means such as impalement or immolation. He can also shift back and forth between the spirit/spectral realm and the material realm when need be.

A bit later in the game he will find the Soul Reaver, but a different version of the sword than from Blood Omen: it's a spectral sword that is fused to his body and his very being. The Soul Reaver will become a key element in the Legacy of Kain storyline.

Vagrant Story  Square (SquareSoft)2000You are the dashing Valendian Knight Ashley Riot in the action -packed role-playing epic VAGRANT STORY. Venture deep into dark, frightening dungeons and do battle with vile monsters in this lush, stunningly rendered adventure. You'll have to solve mind-twisting puzzles, explore diverse environments, and uncover the details of a plot rich with action and pathos. The design team behind FINAL FANTASY TACTICS has gone all out to ensure a compelling and enthralling sword-swinging experience in VAGRANT STORY.***It was called "Medieval Gear Solid" for its emphasis in cutscenes and scenery.
Anyway, Metal Gear Solid and Vragrant Story differ in gameplay, so they are not so similar.***Valendia is a land that had undergone civil war, the end of which had birthed the parliament and several organizations to control the balance of power. Ashley Riot is a Riskbreaker, an elite agent for the Valendia Knights of Peace (VKP) who is investigating some strange occurrences. A cult of religious fanatics known as Müllenkamp and their leader Sydney Losstarot have seized the manor of Duke Bardorba of Valendia Kingdom. The events at the manor have sent Ashley on a quest to get to the bottom of events, and travel into the catacombs that lead to the destroyed, yet magical city of Leá Monde. However Ashley is not the only person interested in the city, and other factions of the government, including parliament assigned Knights of the Crimson Blade and other VKP agents are pursuing their own agenda.

Vagrant Story is a role-playing game with several distinguishing characteristics. The entire game (including the numerous cutscenes that advance the plot) is rendered in 3D. The game focuses on exploration of large, complex dungeon-like areas and combat; there are no "friendly" areas, NPC interaction, or monetary system. Dungeons contain many optional rooms and environmental puzzles that mostly involve pushing, destroying, and re-arranging different types of crates to access higher areas. Ashley can also jump and grab ledges of higher platforms during exploration.

The game runs in real time, with visible enemies and no separate battle screens. When entering combat and attacking an enemy, the game is paused, allowing the player to choose targets and access the menu for other actions. A wireframe sphere displays the range of the currently selected weapon and detailed statistics on different body parts of the enemies within range.

Ashley does not receive experience points from defeating regular enemies; he randomly gains bonuses to his attributes after defeating bosses, but in general the focus of the customization in the game is on weapons. Ashley can equip a wide variety of weapons and armor made out of different materials. Each weapon possesses, besides detailed damage statistics, parameters in one of the three categories (edged, blunt, and piercing), as well as affinity to any of the six enemy types encountered in the game. Damage in battle is calculated according to the weapon's and the enemy's particular strengths and weaknesses in any of these categories. Weapons used constantly against the same type of enemy improve in power against them. Each weapon can also be disassembled in workshops scattered throughout the game, and new weapons can be forged by combining blades with grips. Gems can be attached to some grips, usually increasing the weapon's affinity with an enemy category.

Ashley can also make use of Magic, Chain Abilities and Break Arts. Magic is broken into four groups, namely defense, combat, healing and status. Chain Abilities allow Ashley to "chain together" consecutive hits against enemies. The player can assign various offensive and defensive effects to buttons that need to be pressed at the right time to execute a chain. These effects include inflicting status ailments on the enemy, reflecting damage, etc. Using chains, however, raises Ashley's Risk Meter, making his attacks less precise and himself more vulnerable. Break Arts are special skills learnt after repetitive use of a weapon type. Sacrificing some of the player's health, Break Arts can perform a high damage attack on an enemy.
