Arc the Lad  Working Designs;Sony Computer Entertainment (G-Craft;Japan Studio)1995rasterArc the Lad begins a three-part journey through a magical world on the edge of destruction and populated by a unique cast of role-playing characters, each with specific weapons, attributes, and agendas. Characters are defined through more than a dozen changing elements including range, hit points, magic points, attack and defense levels, magic capacity, agility, experience, jump and throw abilities, counterattack prowess, and the ability to catch thrown items.
Action is controlled through three main areas: Events, Maps, and Battles. Characters can encounter seven different conditions during battle that affect their status, including poison, paralysis, sleep, darkness, silence, and stone, or can lose abilities and strength if they become "Hemo-ji." Battles are fought in enclosed environments, but each controlled character can move freely within the grid-based landscape, employing melee or ranged weapons.
Featured individuals in Arc the Lad include Arc, a well-balanced fighter searching for his father, Kukuru, protector of the sacred flame, and Poco, a marching band member whose instruments play an important part in protecting party members during battle. Tosh, an Elite Guard defying orders by defending the innocent victims of Palencia, Gogen, one of the seven original heroes with an arsenal of mystical powers and spells, and Iga, a monk and master of Kenpo sworn to protect the secret scrolls of the Amaidar Temple, complete the roster. Unexpected help comes from Chongara, a merchant adventurer with access to special attacks and summoning abilities.
Other features include multiple save slots on the PlayStation memory card, access to Chongara's Monster Book with information about statistics, abilities, losses, wins, and items carried, and game options for message speed, dual-shock controller vibration, battle voices, sound, and help.***

Shin Super Robot Taisen  Banpresto (Winky Soft)1996The game plays very much like the SFC Fire Emblem which in itself is already a treat. Battles are fought and viewed from a side view perspective and cut scenes are used to illustrate the fire fights that erupt between adversaries. From the earlier Robot Wars games, Gundam, Getter Robo and Mazinger Z return to reprise their prominent positions on your Robot team. New mechs such as Voltes V, Gyking, Rayzoner and Gundam W can also be used on your strategic strike force.
When your robots engage in fights, you can watch them battle it out in animated sequences that are beautifully drawn and rendered for maximum visual effect. Every robot has a signature move and Mazinger Z can be seen below emitting his breast fire at his enemies.
A big difference over earlier Robot Wars was that the super deformed look is gone.
The full sized robots simply look a lot more imposing and realistic than the baby characters. Bandai has assembled count 'em, 90 voice actors for this production, including many of the actors who did the voices for the original anime series. For fans of the 'Robots' this game is an excellent and essential adventure.

Not quite the classic gameplay that has pushed the Final Fantasy series to the sucess it has now, this game is still one of the best I have ever played. The story is quite gripping, the graphics are very well done, and the gameplay was interesting enough to keep my attention. The game is long, however, and can take quite a while to beat. It brings back the class system seen in Final Fantasy III (NES) and Final Fantasy V (SNES). Among the differences are the battles, which are more of a stragitic campain than a standard RPG 'Attack, use magic, use item...) without thought. It is a fairly difficult game, but good to play. The enemies' levels increase in ratio to yours.***Still one of the best Strategy RPGs out there. If you're a fan of SRPGs... well I'm sure you've played this already. Chances are, this is the game that made you a fan of the genre as it was one of the first great SRPGs to be brought to the US.
