On the moon's side which is turned away from earth a unknown cosmic element causes atmospheric changes. So James Butterfield, a dishonorable dismissed astronaut, flies with his friend Sven to the moon to check the situation and get a reward of one million dollars. Of course the space ship crashes. So the first task is to find medicine for the injured Sven. When that is taken care of James explores the moon and meets many foreign peoples like the Gouaks, Wounks or Amazons.

The user interface consists of many windows. The main window is in the upper right were a picture of the current view or conversational partner is shown. There the player can click on items to collect them or use items from the inventory to solve puzzles. Some items are showed in a close up view in a windows left to the main window when clicked on. There it can be manipulated further. Above this window is a mini map. Under the main window is a panel were the main actions can be chosen, e.g. looking, speaking or fighting. Left and right of this panel are the inventory screens were objects can be used and combined with each other. Finally on the far left are bars were the current stats of health, fatigue, durst and hunger are shown. These have to be hold on a reasonable height by eating, sleeping and so on

When speaking with someone the interfaces changes to another screen where left of the main windows the possible answers can be chosen. Under the main window the statements of the other person are displayed. Death waits behind every corner, a step in the wrong direction, a false answer or a lost fight lead to a individual game over screen.***

Bud Tucker in Double Trouble Merit Studios;Topware Interactive (Merit Studios)1996This wacky adventure puts you in the shoes of Bud Tucker, a pizza delivery boy who also has a job as a lab assistant during the nights. The story involves some fantastic features, mad scientist and robots. One day, Bud found the Professor missing and later learns he's been kidnapped by the evil Dick Tate. Tate, an insane, whiny sob wishes to create a world filled with the people he loves most...himself. To do that, he plans to use one of the Professor's inventions and clone a billion versions of himself to populate the world. It's up to Bud Tucker to track down the loon and the Professor before Barryville becomes Tate Town. It's a point & click adventure where you must travel to various locations in Barryville and find clues and help from the citizens there. The game play consists of picking up items and using them when necessary. There are 3 parts in the game and in the first part, Bud Tucker is locked up in a crumbly hotel in Seedy Street. Speech is available in the game as well as subtitles. The menu (pick up, use, etc) can be displayed in words as well as icons. This cartoon adventure is sadly little known because Eidos cancelled its plan to distribute the game in the U.S... probably due to poor sales in Europe, which is probably due to lack of marketing. Because: it's a fun and solid game in every respect with a wacky plot, though disappointingly short.***

Dunkle Schatten 2: Im Netzwerk gefangen Bundesministerium des Innern (The Art Department)1996This German adventure (which means Dark Shadows 2: Trapped in the network) is the sequel to the adventure Dunkle Schatten, also published by the German Federal Ministry of Interior as part of the FAIRSTÄNDNIS campaign against racism and violence. The game's a point-and-click adventure with an interface reminding of the later Sierra adventures. It is greatly improved over the first part as it now uses SVGA screen resolution. The story is set two years after the first. You again play as Karsten who this time has to deal with Neonazis defacing the memorial stone for a long dead, Jewish town mayor. And some classmate of his seem to be involved as he distributes Nazi computer games... labelimagesubject

Leisure Suit Larry 7: Love for Sail!  Sierra1996his game in the popular comic adult adventure series featured more fleshed-out, cartoon style graphics and full voice acting. It was the sixth installment (due to the fourth game never being completed. It was the last Larry game created by Al Lowe. After many of the Larry games had gained a reputation for not actually featuring all that much raunchy content when analysed, this installment included some much more risque elements. It was the first game since the third to pick up immediately where its predecessor left off; typically, it features Larry getting dumped by the woman who represented the ultimate goal of Larry 6, Shamara. The formula was much the same as the previous games: the "twist" was that Larry was a passenger on a cruise ship populated by parodies of famous people. Various other pop icons were parodied in the background, such as the Archie Comics gang playing nude volleyball, various incarnations of James Bond in the ship's casino, a Sierra staffer dressed as Sailor Moon, and porn icon Ron Jeremy walking around naked. The plot revolves around Larry's attempt at winning a weekly contest held on the ship by Captain Thygh, a gorgeous blonde. The player must come up with a variety of ways to cheat in each of Larry's assigned competitions so that he can get the highest score and win the contest. Among Larry's chosen competitions are a cooking contest, a "best dressed" contest, a game of horseshoes, bowling, the sexual prowess contest and others. It was also the first Larry game to include a full-fledged minigame: by collecting hidden red-and-white-striped dildos, the player could unlock high quality pin-up desktop wallpapers of the ladies in the game. Players could also "appear" in the game by placing voice samples of selected dialogue and a digitized photo in a particular directory (the default was Al Lowe).***

Nemesis: The Wizardry Adventure  Virgin Interactive (Sir-tech Software)1996Players control as an seemingly unremarkable peasant who was minding his own business when
the society of Nitherin Mages
sent a fowl beast in an attempted kidnapping. A good wizard completely deck-out for battle just happened to be watching over the peasant while standing in a tiny boat in a nearby water (hmmm), and foiled the kidnapping. The High Council knows of the group responsible but not the reason, nor why they have such a specific target. The unremarkable present is charged to investigate and stop them.

Individual item skill is gained by using said item. Spells can be learned. For battle, commands are selected and the player then clicked on the target. There is a great deal of talking to be done to complete the investigation. There are many puzzle to be solved. All done with the mouse or keyboard shortcuts.

Conceived as a complex real-time adventure game with dialog and combat but with contrastingly simplified interface that is still "more than click-click-click". It does not take place in the same Universe as the main Wizardry series and gameplay has nothing in common with the main Wizardry series (even critics who loved the game gave it poor ratings for calling it "Wizardry").***

Orion Burger Eidos (Sanctuary Woods)1996The intergalactic fast-food chain Orion Burger uses the services of an alien meat-supplier named Zlarg, who only cares for money and doesn't have much in a way of conscience. So his next genius plan is to use the inhabitants of the planet Earth, known as "humans", as a raw, protein-rich material for the tasty burgers. However, interstellar law forbids using sentient creatures as meat. Every raw ingredient has to pass specific tests for sentience. Zlarg knows it, and he rigs the tests in such a way that no creature can pass it. Enter Wilbur Wafflemeier, an ordinary guy who is about to be grilled... in more than one way. Somehow, the unlikely hero has to find a way to pass the tests...

Orion Burger is a traditional puzzle-solving adventure with cartoon-like 2D graphics. It uses verb commands "Take", "Use", and "Talk" for interaction with the environment. The game consists of five tests, each of them requiring Wilbur to explore his home town, talk to people, gather inventory items, and solve tricky puzzles in order to succeed and qualify as a sentient being.***

Toonstruck Virgin (Burst Entertainment)1996Toonstruck is a point-and-click adventure in the style of Monkey Island series. It uses a one-icon system, and the protagonist is a motion-captured actor against an animated environment.

Like an adventure game in the Roger Rabbit style. Drew Blanc, the main character, is played by Christopher Lloyd, whom you may know as the professor in Back to the Future and Fester in The Addams Family movies. He ventures through the animated world consisting of very weird cartoon characters. The land is being overrun by an evil doctor, and you, as Drew, must stop him.***

[22]******A cinematic-heavy 1995 adventure game from LucasArts. It's like a cool animated biker movie. The game doesn't have a tremendous amount of replay value, but it's so intensely cool the first time around I can forgive it. The combination 3D rendered animations and hand-drawn characters and backgrounds (really cool in 1995) is pulled off well, and the storyline and voice acting is superb. The game uses the venerable SCUMM engine for the adventure portions, and a variation on the Rebel Assault engine for its (fairly easy) action-oriented biking/fighting scenes.

Watch for Mark Hamill in three different roles, including that of lead villian Adrian Ripburger, the evil second-in-command of Corley Motors.

Darkseed II  Cyberdreams (Destiny Media Technologies)1995Dark Seed II continues the nightmare of Mike Dawson as he recovers from a nervous breakdown from his earlier encounters with the Ancients. Back in his hometown, Mike's high school sweetheart, Rita, is found murdered after the high school reunion. Unfortunately, Mike cannot remember much about that night, even though others saw him with Rita. Now, as the prime suspect, he must find a way to prove his innocence.

The designs of H.R. Giger are pivotal in this horror-tinged point 'n click adventure. Players will be swapping between the Normal World and the Dark World, with 75 prerendered 3D locations in total. There are 40 characters to interact with. The goal is to overthrow the Behemoth of the Dark World and cut through the corruption of the Normal World.

Movement, action and dialogue interaction modes are toggled between using the right mouse button, with the full screen used for location display unless the game menu or inventory bars are called into use.

Die Höhlenwelt Saga: Der Leuchtende Kristall  Software 2000 (Weltenschmiede)1995After a series of German interactive fiction games (Das Stundenglas, Die Kathedrale, Hexuma), Harald Evers and his Weltenschmiede move on to point-and-click graphic adventures. Die Höhlenwelt Saga embeds a fantasy underworld in a science fiction frame. Starship pilot Eric "Speedy" MacDoughan traces his lost love, mysterious Maomi, to the barren planet 2S-126 in the Taurus 5 system, to discover that a network of caves leads to a gigantic cave world far beneath the crust - the Höhlenwelt ("cave world"). Down there, flying dragons and humanoid peoples live on a magical-medieval level under the despotic rule of an alien reptile race called Drakken. Eric meets the artificial being Cal (a deja vu for Hexuma players), who sends him to the cave world to retrieve a powerful energy crystal (the Leuchtende Kristall ("glowing crystal") from the game's title). And find Maomi, of course. Die Höhlenwelt Saga is a pretty straight-forward, inventory-driven point-and-click adventure game. Once Eric befriends a flying dragon named Susi (yes, Susi), he's free to explore the key places on the cave world continent of Veldoor at leisure, though the game's puzzles are strictly linear nevertheless. The game is entirely in German and was published in Germany only. The CD version of Die Höhlenwelt Saga features voice-overs for the intro and narrator sequences, but character dialogues stay text messages. labelimagesubject
Discworld Psygnosis (Teeny Weeny Games)1995One of the most underrated adventure games ever, Discworld is based on Terry Pratchett's pun-filled fantasy Discworld series, in which the whole world is carried through space by a turtle, and idioms and puns do have a life of their own. As bumbling wizard Rincewind, prevent the Dragon from destroying the world. The game has great humor (although dialogues drag on at times), and some of the most devious but logical puzzles ever designed. Famed Monty Python veteran Eric Idle's performance as the voice of Rincewind is flawless, although some dialogues are very long-winded to the point of frustrating. Clever puzzles and hilarious animations, however, more than make up for it. Highly recommended for Pratchett fans and fans of zany adventure games in general.***

Flight of the Amazon Queen  Renegade Software;Warner Interactive Entertainment (Interactive Binary Illusions)1995It is 1949 and you play Joe King, pilot for hire with his small private plane the "Amazon Queen". The game is a spoof of old time adventure serials. After yet another daring escape at the start of the game, Joe suddenly remembers that he is scheduled to fly the famous movie star, Faye Russell, to a photo shoot in the Amazon jungle the next morning. But when he arrives at the hotel to pick her up, his arch rival Hans Anderson of Flying Dutchman Airlines locks him in the room. Finding a way out, he takes off with Miss Russell only to have his plane get hit by lightning and crash in the Amazon jungle. Now he will have to face some horrible challenges to survive: 6 feet tall 'pygmies', beautiful Amazon women (and their happy prisoners!), misguided missionaries, a wisecracking parrot, and of course a mad scientist, who's trying to take over the world by injecting dinosaur DNA into the women. This is a long, 3rd person, point & click game, with easy to use icons for action, a small inventory, and a brilliant map. The music is upbeat and changes with each location, the graphics are imaginative and colorful, with careful attention to often-hysterical details (Aztec temple statues holding baseball bats!), and the short animated cut scenes used to advance the story are a pure delight to watch. The puzzles are crazy, absorbing and fun (wearing fake breasts, bartering with a pygmy), and are usually solved by clues you have picked up in conversations and/or with inventory items. Most are not too difficult, but they do get harder as you go along. The CD-ROM version also offers surprisingly good voice acting - a rare treat in adventure games. It was made freeware on Mar 16/2004 when the source code was kindly given to the ScummVM team who then made it fully compatible with their engine.***

In the Dead of Night Trecision1995In one of the better but sadly less-known shareware games, you are private investigator Tom Scool. You have been hired by a dishonest jewel collector to sneak into a famous actress' chalet, posing as the double of well-known thriller writer Eric Wells, and to steal her precious gem "Vesnú". But the actress was killed by one of her guests and because of snowstorm you have to wait for police and try to solve this murder case by yourself. Every character has their own personality and you have to find their weakest places, talking to all of them and collecting the items which are available for your inventory. The game sports some good puzzles, believable characters, and an excellent plot. Overall, an atmospheric game that could easily have sold as a commercial game, and boded well for Trecision's later adventure games, including the outstanding Nightlong. labelimagesubject
Kajko i Kokosz Mirage Software (Seven Stars Multimedia)1995A pair of inseparable friends - smart, short, yet brave Kajko and his buddy, big, bald, fat, strong & gluttonous Kokosz - must face again the notorious Zbojcerze (Rogueknights) and their evil plot set to conquer the peaceful village of Mirmilowo. The early medieval setting and fantasy themes resemble "Asterix & Obelix". Kajko i Kokosz is a classic point & click adventure game, based on a popular Polish comic book series featuring the same characters. You can switch between the two characters at will, and some actions have to be done with a specific character. The controls are pretty simple - to interact with the environment, you just have to click. You have a limited space in your inventory, but you can take an object from your inventory and drop it anywhere at any time. The game graphics feature original artwork created by the creator of the series, Janusz Christa, thus retaining the "look & feel" of the comic books. labelimagesubject

Simon the Sorcerer II - The Lion, The Wizard & The Wardrobe  Adventure Soft1995A sequel to Simon the Sorcerer, this second game in the series gives us more mis-adventures from our teenaged sorcerer (of some sort). Thrown into another dimension by his own wardrobe, Simon starts the heroic mission (of some sort) to find -another wardrobe that could get him back home. Equipped with his pointy sorcerer's hat (of some sort), he will also rescue the world (again) from the evil Sordid. It's a point-and-click adventure in a style similar to the first Simon game, only technologically improved. The two games in the series are of the most charming low-profile games ever that have captured many an adventurer's heart. It has difficult but fair puzzles, witty dialogues, and inimitable self-effacing humor and charm. A couple of things are new: the word commands (like 'talk to' and 'look at') have been replaced by Icons (a Magnifying Glass and a Mouth), and some scenes can be scrolled now, so make sure you always check the edges of every screen for new locations.***

Space Quest 6: Roger Wilco in The Spinal Frontier  Sierra On-Line1995This game was the last to be released in the Space Quest series. It ran on the last version of the SCI engine, SCI32. This allowed it to use Super VGA graphics with 256 colors at 640×480 resolution. Unlike other SCI games, it didn't have the interface in a pull down bar at the top of the screen, but instead used a "verb bar" window along the bottom of the screen, similar to LucasArts' SCUMM engine. The graphics style was also more cartoonish than in previous games. Gary Owens served as narrator once again. Having defeated the diabolical pukoid mutants in Space Quest V, Captain Roger Wilco triumphantly returns to StarCon headquarters - only to be court-martialed due to breaking StarCon regulations while saving the galaxy. He's busted down to Janitor Second Class, and assigned to the SCS DeepShip 86 (a parody of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), commanded by Commander Kielbasa, a Cowardly Lion look-alike whose name is taken from the polish sausage as well as being a play on the names of both the feline Kilrathi from the computer game series Wing Commander and of the character Mufasa from the animated motion picture The Lion King. His voice is a parody of Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation. The game's subtitle comes from the final portion, in which Roger has to undergo miniaturization and enter the body of a shipmate and romantic interest. Josh Mandel designed the majority of Space Quest 6 (with Scott Murphy on-board in a "creative consultant" capacity) but had to leave the project shortly before completion due to internal strife with Sierra. As an additional result of this change in designers, some puzzles - primarily in the latter stages of the game - were shoddily implemented due to lack of communication. Note that the level demo contains new content and puzzles not found in the retail game.***

Touché: The Adventures of the Fifth Musketeer  U.S. Gold;Mirage (Clipper Software)1995Geoffroi Le Brun, ensign in His Majesty’s musketeers, arrives in the middle of the night in 16th century Rouen, France, to start his new posting at the musketeer headquarters. At the moment he arrives, the unfortunate Comte d’Itee, William de Peuple, is attacked by bandits and his precious will is stolen. Geoffroi offers him, just before he dies, his assistance to find his will.

Of course, getting it back will not be easy, and he must travel back and forth across France to accomplish his quest, visiting the cities of Amiens, St Quentin, Le Mans, Paris, and Le Havre. However, he is assisted by a clever manservant, called Henri, who will be a great help, without any doubt. With some luck, he will hunt the murderer(s) down and find the will. And who knows, maybe he will meet a beautiful lady or find a fortune on the way.

Touché: The Adventures of the Fifth Musketeer is a humorous, inventory-based point and click adventure game. By right-clicking on a hotspot a context-sensitive action interface pops up, showing the relevant actions. The game is a full talkie with captions, music and sound effects. It features a progressive traveling map, which allows to visit new locations after having solved various puzzles.***

Dragon Lore: The Legend Begins Mindscape (Cryo Interactive)1994This is a game with pretty graphics from Cryo. Werner Von Hallenrod, having reached eighteen, sets off to prove himself worthy of joining the Dragon Knights, and incidentally discover the truth about his father's death. He needs votes from current Knights to be accepted. Some Knights exhort him to be bloodthirsty, others to take the path of wisdom (nonviolence). One refreshing character will accept a bribe in return for a positive vote. A bar graph measures Werner's actions, growing towards violence or wisdom depending on his actions in certain circumstances. There are no conversations, only monologues from NPC's, as Werner never speaks in any way. Perhaps he should have been christened Noel, the Silent Knight. Whatever, Werner heads out, kills some monsters, picks up a few spells, and finally arrives at Von Wallenrod castle. The rest of the game is taken up with a scavenger hunt in the castle, finding various objects and figuring out what to do with them. Some items are not easy to see, and every room must be scanned thoroughly to ensure not missing something important. While there is some fighting, it is similar to Alone In The Dark. Werner has no stats or skills, only a bar measuring his life force. Combat is simply equipping a weapon and bashing away, hoping you can outlast the monster. Magic is minimal. Two spells are one-time-only; fireball can be handy, if you have time to bring up the runes for it. Teleport, when finally obtained, allows Werner to move around the castle easily, and later the countryside, when he receives the magic map. This is the best feature of the game.***
[22]***Your task is to become a Dragon Knight and take revenge of your father's murderer. The game features 2 CDs full of graphics and rendered-sequences. Astonishing for a game that has been released late 1994/early 1995.
