Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat Mindscape1995This was and still is the most challenging tactical game I've ever played. You lead your little army through the missions you pick, losses carrying over to the following missions and you restoring and buying new squads every once in a while between missions with your limited funds. There's no base building, no super powers, only your squads and the massive forces against you. Although you may get past a mission, your losses may easily be too great to allow progressing any farther (and this may become apparent only after several missions). This leads to much frustration if you can't change your tactics to match in the earlier missions and effectively leads focus on minimizing your losses rather than just meeting the mission goals. labelimageminimize

StarCraft  Blizzard Entertainment1998In the distant future, the newly formed Terran Dominion faces the arrival of two hostile alien races: the savage Zerg and the enigmatic Protoss. Gather resources and expand your forces to lead them to victory. The only allies are enemies. The only choice is war.***For 1-8 players, with teams or in FFA. Cross-platform play with Mac.***Latest version: 1.16 (as of 2008-11-27)***An incredible RTS that requires both brains and speed. Not trackball- or trackpad-friendly. Though the graphics are rather primitive by today's standards, that's only because this game is relatively old.

It features three different playable races, each of which requires different strategies for maximum effectiveness. Play as the versatile Terran colonists, the voracious Zerg xenomorphs, or the enigmatic, psionically gifted Protoss (my personal favorite).

The game also includes a map editing program for the unique SCM and SCX map format, enabling a patient user to craft new maps and scenarios. Some of the features take some getting used to, but FAQs are available at [[link:http://www.blizzard.com/starcraft]].

The screenshot at right is from the first mission in the expansion, StarCraft: Brood War.

StarCraft: Brood War  Blizzard Entertainment1998With the shattered Zerg hive torn apart by fierce in-fighting, the Protoss seek to reunite with their Dark Templar brethren and begin the rebuilding of their home world, Aiur. Terran Emperor Mengsk I, having achieved his goal of total power over the human colonies, must now turn his attention to both the rising power of the woman he betrayed, Kerrigan, the infamous Zerg Queen of Blades, and a conspiracy deep within his own ranks. Three all new campaigns continue the epic StarCraft story line. New worlds to explore, from the Dark Templar twilight home world of Shakuras to the blasted and barren deserts of Korhal. Original cinematic scenes and new music tracks. 100 new multiplayer maps.***

X-COM: Terror from the Deep  2K Games (Microprose Software)1999The war continues... X-COM: UFO Defense brought you to a galactic battlefield. X-COM: Terror from the Deep brings the alien terror into a totally new dimension.

Seeking to take advantage of a weakened Earth, X-COM's deep space foes unexpectedly change strategy and launch a powerful second front against planet Earth.

In the dark depths of vast oceans, long sleeping forces are awakened by reanimation signals sent out across the galactic silence by their interstellar brothers and sisters. Slowly but surely, an army of hibernating alien sea creatures awakens. Command & Conquer: Generals Electronic Arts (EA Pacific)2003A new chapter in the Command & Conquer universe, set somewhere in the 2020s, pits three sides for global domination: the United States of America, the People's Republic of China and the Global Liberation Army (GLA).

Generals features real world (renamed or slightly altered) weapons combined with quasi-high-tech ones, new control schemes and a fast-paced multiplayer. Generals is the first game in the Command & Conquer series not to include FMV or pre-rendered cutscenes between missions, and was also the first C&C game without the Westwood Studios label (although the development studio was initially called Westwood Pacific before being merged into EA Pacific). It uses a full 3D environment powered by the SAGE engine, a modified version of the W3D engine previously seen in C&C: Renegade.

The core gameplay differs somewhat from other games in the series, a move done in order to modernize the formula. First off, construction yards are absent, as structures are built by dozers for the USA and China, and workers for the GLA. The sidebar is replaced with the bottom bar, and support powers are "purchased" with leveling up as a general, which is done through participating in combat. For the first time in the series, each factory-type structure (barracks, war factory, airfield...) has its own build queue, in the same fashion as in Blizzard's RTS titles before it, instead of having a shared one like in the previous C&C games. Upgrades are available for the first time in the series as well, bringing improvements to units and structures. Everything is paid for in advance instead of having credits slowly drain as the object is constructed.***

[game=Virgin Interactive]Virgin Interactive[/game] restarted the project under ALTAR in 2001.***UFO: Aftermath is a 3D isometric, tactical strategy game with a rich and compelling sci fi story.

Combining a global strategy with small squad tactical combat, the challenge offered is to fight against an alien invasion. Featuring run time generated tactical missions with innovative simultaneous combat action; the genre is also enhanced with strong RPG elements, offering a quite unique mix of strategic ideas.

RPG - Your soldiers will improve as they gain more experience. Their skills are derived from these statistics, and each point that you put into any one of these attributes will have a noticeable effect on that soldier's skills. These attributes are: Strength, Agility, Dexterity, Willpower, Intelligence, and Perception

Strategy - You must manage your bases, interceptions, and squads. Territory is equal to power in the game - the more you control, the better your interceptor coverage. Also, the faster you research, the better things could be.

Tactics - Fighting on the ground against aliens and mutants for the control of territories. Once you control a territory, you can decide what type of base you want there: Research, Military, Manufacture or Biomass repulsion.

Combat - Unique combat system features all of the best elements of both turn-based and real-time combat systems. You give orders while the game is paused to avoid the frantic rush of a real time system. While in pause you can give your troops very detailed orders taking as much time as you like. Once you are finished you simply start the game and continue playing. Once the game is underway you can pause the game at any point to update or change your orders and the game will automatically pause when important events occur, so that you may modify your plans accordingly. This combat is combining the finely grained tactics of a turn-based game with the realism of a real time system.

Key features:

* Simultaneous combat (mentioned above)
* Randomly generated tactical missions - each playing field will be unique meaning no two games are the same
* Intricate, rich and frightening alien setting displayed in full 3D
* Over 100 varied mission objectives
* 70 plus unique weapons
[Cenega]***Combines global strategy with small squad tactical combat in the fight against an alien invasion. It features run-time generated tactical missions, completely in 3D, with innovative simultaneous action combat, strong RPG elements and strategy game on the planetary level.

STORY

The story begins in A.D. 2741 on a distant planet called Morningstar Prime, a world initially colonized during the 24th century by Crayven Corporation from Earth. Morningstar Prime is but one of hundred planets discovered during mankinds reemergence from the Third World War. Morningstar Prime resembles Earth in many ways, it features indigenous life forms and a similar but still different flora and fauna.

The Great War with the Terran Empire has forced the originally democratic twelve city-states of Morningstar Prime to unite under one military leader and the flag of the Northern Star Alliance.

Battlefield Lost
During the First Stellar War in the 25th Century, the Crayven Corporation lost contact with the colony on Morningstar Prime, leaving them and the other colonies in the outer fringes to fend for themselves. In 2701, the new Terran Empire returned to the outer fringes with the intent of reconquering those colonies. The Imperial forces initially expected little resistance, having assumed that Morningstar would have been devastated and regressed like many other outer colonies.

The first Imperial strike was sudden and savage but the NSA managed to defeat the strike fleet, much thanks to the military competence and leadership of Fleet Admiral T Parker. The initial victory allowed NSA to improve their defenses and gear up for war. Fleet Admiral T Parker, an experienced and wise commander knew that they had won the battle but not the war. She initiated several projects that would search for a long-term solution to the threat from the Terran Empire.

In the following years, the war continued to be fought in space. For several years the Terran Empire attacked NSA space, destroying its colonies one by one, enslaving the people and getting closer to Morningstar Prime, the NSA home world. In 2730, after 29 years of constant war, NSA lost the last of their huge Fortress class ships along with the majority of all their capital ships in a decisive battle outside Morningstar. The NSA had in one single battle lost all their space capability and was at the mercy of the Empire. The Terran Empire ignored all negotiations for peace, they held true to their long-kept tradition: leave no pardon, no surrender.

Fortunately, Fleet Admiral T Parkers' legacy was already in action. Huge electromagnetic domes had been erected on Morningstar Prime to shield the largest cities from orbital bombardment. But they never had the time nor the resources to shield all cities; millions died in month long planetary bombardments. Several urban areas were reduced to piles of rubble and eerie graveyards.

The war entered a brief state of stalemate, as the Empire was unable to penetrate the shields while the NSA were being held prisoners in their own shields. The stalemate was broken when the Empire managed to land their first troopships in the bombarded regions outside the domes.

Jacob Angelus' Company has been sent to Morningstar capitol, where situation is becoming more and more critical and desperate.
For NSA, destiny is at hand; its only hope lies in an ancient and forgotten legend...

[Cenega]***After the alien invasion, the Council of Earth successfully fought the Reticulans and moreover discovered their secret plan: to cover the Earth with "Biomass", a network of alien organic tissue that, the Reticulans hoped, would become conscious and endowed with immense psychic powers. The Reticulans who invaded the Earth are not true representatives of their kind, they are a breakaway faction that burned the bridges and chose this backwater part of space to conduct its experiments.

The Reticulans would construct a large satellite (several kilometres across) with a closed ecosystem and move the remnants of human population there. The experiment with the Biomass would go on on the surface. Then something went horribly wrong...

Star Wars: Empire at War  LucasArts;Activision (Petroglyph Games)2006EMPIRE AT WAR

In the early 19th century a group of elite scientists formed around brilliant mathematician Jarvis Babbit. Together they formed a secret society dedicated to seeking out parallel worlds, worlds of which our ancestors had only the vaguest of ideas and whose very existence had never been proven.

After decades of study Babbit finally does manage to uncover the secrets of the dimension gates. A mechanical computer of his own design allows him to calculate both where and when a dimension gate between the worlds will open. And so did Babbit and his followers discover the ParaWorld, a world of warlike tribes, awe-inspiring dinosaurs and other terrifying primeval creatures.

The new-found ability to travel between the worlds gives members of this secret society possibilities hitherto unknown: governed by an entirely different set of natural laws, ParaWorld affects them much as the fabled fountain of youth. These scientists age no more.

Yet three young scientists stumble onto the secret: hot-tempered geologist Anthony Cole, nature-loving biologist Stina Holmlund and the somewhat introverted physics genius Béla Andràs Benedek. All three have come across evidence pointing to the existence of a parallel world in the course of their research.

A perifdious trick allows Babbit to lure the three young scientists into a trap which leaves them stranded on ParaWorld. Ill-equipped, they have nothing but one weapon capable of guaranteeing their survival – their own power of reason.

... the clock is ticking ...

Don’t just control the galaxy...corrupt it!

*All new units and planets: Command over 28 new underworld units as well as new Rebel and Imperial forces and heroes on 13 new planets.

UFO: Afterlight takes us to Mars, where a human colony has been built with the help of the Reticulans not long before the events of [game=#155167]UFO: Aftershock[/game] took place. Mars base is self-sustainable and provides all the necessities for survival of humans on a foreign planet, mainly breathable air, water and food. Although the people inhabiting this colony have the technologies and knowledge required for their further development, basic survival is their major concern. Their only activity is the research of a nearby excavation site, which proves the existence of an ancient intelligent and highly developed alien civilization.

The player will enter the game when the research drastically affects all Mars inhabitants. New and unexpected enemies appear in the form of robots, built centuries ago by the unknown aliens for their protection, whose purpose is to eliminate any traces of other civilizations on Mars.

Humans on Mars now have a good reason for their own development, even though not knowing yet that the planetary self-defense mechanism might not be the worst awaiting them, and that their unintentional opening of hyperspace gates will bring an even bigger enemy right to their door. After all attempts to contact the Earth Laputa fail, the colonists are left with no other choice than to fight the enemies with their own means, or be annihilated.

Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars  Electronic Arts (EA Los Angeles)2007CnC3 is probably the hardest strategy game I know, and not because the AI is that good, but because it cheats so much. Even on the so called easy difficulty the game is frustratingly hard to even barely win (later) missions. Besides that I still like it, especially the revised GDI and the all new Scrin faction. As a game I would not recommend this to anyone but the masochistic players or diehard Tiberium series fans.***Latest version: 1.09 (as of ?)***March, 2047. A massive nuclear fireball explodes high in the night sky, marking the dramatic beginning to the Third Tiberium War and long-awaited return of the most groundbreaking Real-time Strategy franchise (RTS) of all time.

The critically-acclaimed Command & Conquer (C&C) series returns with Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars (C&C 3). Setting the standard for the future of RTS gaming once more, C&C 3 takes you back to where it all began—the Tiberium Universe.

In 2047, Tiberium has blanketed the Earth, which is now divided into zones based on the level of Tiberium infestation. Pristine Blue Zones represent 20% of the planet's surface and are the last refuge of the civilized world. Partially habitable Yellow Zones make up 50% of the planet's surface; most of the world's population lives in these war-torn and ecologically ravaged areas. The remaining 30% of the planet is uninhabitable, a Tiberium wasteland swept by violent Ion Storms. Red Zones are like the surface of an Alien planet.

The infamous Kane has returned to lead the Brotherhood of Nod in a massive global assault on the Global Defense Initiative and the few remaining Blue zones left on the planet. Only you can stop him. The fate of humanity – and the planet – is in your hands.

Featuring state-of-the-art, next-generation graphics, an epic story with live action, full-motion video sequences, and the classic fast-paced C&C style of play, C&C 3 sets the standard for the single player RTS experience.

When you decide to test your skills online, a suite of truly innovative features, such as the ability to transform online battles into a spectator sport, unfold.

Welcome back, Commander.

* Smarter – Improved vehicle AI and path-finding.
* More Realistic – All new weather effects directly impact the battlefield.
[Relic]***Introduces two new armies, the British 2nd and the German Panzer Elite, both with their own all new campaigns, too.

British are slow-moving and highly defensive army and apparently has movable base unlike all the other armies, as well as tank airdrop and many other interesting and unique abilities.

Panzer Elite on the other hand is a low number force of, you know, elite forces who're more suited for rushing the enemy in Blitzkrieg tactics and specializes on vehicular combat more than any other army.

Apparently You won't need to have Opposing Fronts to play against their armies after a new patch is rolled out for the original game, although you won't be able to play _as_ either of the new armies if you don't get the expansion, nor likely are you able to play the two old armies if you don't have the original, but you can still play against those who either have only the expansion or only the original even if you only have the other.

Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath  Electronic Arts (EA Los Angeles)2008Far more enjoyable to play than the base CnC3 in my experience, and the difficulty options actually work properly in this. In terms of story, Kane's Wrath is sort of a filler, covering things between second and third tiberium wars, clarifying some events of third tiberium war and shows part of the events leading to CnC4. If anyone is ever interested in CnC3, then this is the only reason to get it, besides following the story of Kane (Tiberium series) if you're into that sort of thing. Thisis also very much focused on mutliplayer experience as the story only allows you to play with Nod and its sub-factions and only cursorily demonstrating the new sub-factions for GDI and Scrin.***In the name of Kane! The Command & Conquer™ series continues to thrive with Command & Conquer™ 3: Kane’s Wrath. As the expansion pack to the critically-acclaimed and fan favorite, Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars™, this Real-time Strategy (RTS) game returns to the Tiberium Universe with Kane at the center of an epic new single player campaign spanning 20 years – from the rebirth of the Brotherhood of Nod after the Second Tiberium War through the dramatic events of the Third Tiberium War and beyond. This story will be told through a new set of high-definition, live action video sequences starring a celebrity cast including Joe Kucan, playing the megalomaniac leader of the Brotherhood of Nod, alongside new talent Natasha Henstridge and Carl Lumbly. Dreamlords Resurrection  LockPick Entertainment2008[b]2009-06-24[/b] — [company=Lockpick Entertainment]Lockpick[/company] filed for bankruptcy; intentions are to keep Dreamlords running despite this.***Slightly more interesting than other browser-based strategy/management games, but only because you can fight real-time battles with the Windows client. The game has similar extremely slow pace other browser-based games have (unless you enjoy grinding items and such in battles, but ultimately you have to just wait). The in-game research takes hours if not days (in real-time) to complete, and gaining even one new follower takes 30 minutes (again in real-time) by default. Although you can spend real cash to speed up gaining of followers, the game world is reset occasionally (I have no idea how often, but I'd presume at least a month passes before such happens) which puts all your progress back to 0 and the battle begins anew (and research, and gaining followers, and killing the same things, etc.). I can't imagine anyone being interested in repeating that for more than 2-3 times at most, but I can't imagine people grinding their chars to level 70 or such in [game=World of Warcraft]WoW[/game] either on weekly basis, so I guess I'm not the person to ask.***[b]Factions:[/b]

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3  Electronic Arts (EA Los Angeles)2008In Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 hopeless leaders of a doomed Soviet Union travels back in time so that they can change history. A new alternate timeline appears where the Soviets now find themselves as the leading superpower but also discover something else has gone terribly wrong. World War III is raging, the Japanese Empire of the Rising Sun has risen in the east challenging the Soviet bid for world domination. A three-way war now emerges between the Soviet Union, the Allies, and a new Empire of the Rising Sun faction.

The game follows the tradition of the Command & Conquer series where the player must build up bases and produce a massive attack force to destroy all enemies. The player may choose any one of the three factions, each with a different array of infantry, armored vehicles, aircraft, ships to fight with, as well as buildings with new technologies, upgrades, and the all-powerful super weapons. Players do all their building from a sidebar, this allows them to create production queues and deploy structures fast and easily.***
