This game began life as as 3D platformer for the N64 starring Yoshi. Nintendo rejected the developer's proposal and the game was eventually retooled to what we see now. However, the proposal spurred the idea of a 3D platformer starring Mario and Luigi for the N64. That game would eventually be published albeit without Luigi.
