Ghosts 'n Goblins  Capcom1985One of the best side-scrollers ever, also a very hard game. An absolute classic. Re-released in 1998 on Saturn and Playstation consoles in Capcom Generation 2 with new stuff.***It's a classic action platformer where you're playing a heroic knight out to destroy the evil creatures of the land. Amongst them are the various monsters such as zombies, demons, spirits, bats, goblins, and so forth. As in most games in this genre, you can pick up several kinds of add-ons on your way, greatly improving your chance of survival.***The Japanese title loosely translates to 'Demon Village.'

[52]***The positive aspect of this classic vertical-scrolling shooting game are the good play controls. On the negative side stands the repetitive stage and enemy design. Over 30 levels is much for an old shooting game, but after a few stages you have virtually seen everything the game has to offer. And in later stages with many enemies on screen the game begins to flicker annoyingly. Still quite an improvement over other classic shooters like [game=#8480]Xevious[/game].***This game is great its just your plane and you fighting planes for 34 or so levels.

Son Son  Capcom (Micronics)1986Son Son is a conversion of a rather unknown Capcom arcade game and was only released in Japan. You control a monkey named Son Son on his way through 19 stages towards a heaven-like place. When you select 2-player mode Son Son is accompanied by his pig friend Ton Ton, which is controlled by the second player. You can jump up and down platforms and shoot incoming enemies. The levels are scrolling automatically. An overall average shooting/platform hybrid. At least it spawned eventually a much better sequel ([game=#101388]Son Son II[/game]) for the PC-Engine a few years later. NESlabelimageminimize

[52]***The Ghosts 'n Goblins series is known for its harsh difficulty level and sadly the NES version is no exception. On top of that you have to play through the game twice to see the real ending. However, if you are up for a real challenge (or have a good method to cheat at hand), the game might become enjoyable, because it features great graphics and music for an early NES game and is an all in all very faithful arcade conversion regarding the limited capabilities of the Famicom/NES.***Ghosts'n Goblins was a popular arcade game before it made the leap to the NES in 1986. Like later games in the series, Ghosts'n Goblins presents quite a challenge to players brave enough to take on the role of Arthur and delve into the realm of demons and monsters to rescue the kidnapped princess. Choose your weapons wisely and take advantage of their strengths to deal with the situation at hand. Pass through the six gates that stand between you and Astaroth, and teach him a lesson in chivalry he'll never forget. Demonstrating a high level of technical prowess for a game of its era, Ghosts'n Goblins presents a unique and unforgettable universe. The stage for adventure is set. Are you up to the test?

[52]***I really liked the C64 version of Commando (which C64 user doesn't remember that awesome music?), so I was really curious how the NES version would play. Commando is an early Run and Gun game, one of the genre defining games so to say, originally released in the arcades and converted to virtually every homecomputer possible. The NES version is an interesting version and playable, it even has a new feature. Throwing grenades at some places reveals otherwise hidden stairs which you can climb down and enter extra mini-rooms sometimes filled with enemies but often also having extra items in them. But the game fails to be as good as it could have been. The music doesn't drive me forward as it did in the C64 version. The graphics are adequate for a 1986 game but there is often much flickering. Sometimes enemy soldiers just disappear completely from the screen. The game has only four short levels, but despite this it is rather difficult.***Publish in Japan, 1986-09-27

You manipulate the controls, creating movement of TROJAN™'s protective armored shield and the wielding of his shining sword.
Filled with relentless energy and determination, you muster courage, embarking on the challenge of invading the enemy's territory to rescue the captives from the army of the evil empire.***
[1]***
[52]***"Tatakai no Banka" (released as "Trojan" in the US) is a standard beat'em up game in a postapocalyptic scenario where you kill enemies with your sword in order to reach the evil end boss. It is based on the arcade game of the same name. Today you could call it unoriginal, but I think in 1986 the gameplay was not yet overused and in combination with the good graphics makes it a worthwhile game. The six levels are pretty varied but also rather short. In addition to the normal gameplay mode you could start a two player vs. mode which resembles a simplified fighting game.

Mickey Mousecapade  Capcom;Hudson Soft (Hudson Soft)1987"Help! Help!" echos a mysterious voice. Mickey Mouse, the famous world explorer, has heard the cries of one of his friends and he's off on a rescue mission... This adventure starts in a zany Fun House. Join Mickey and Minnie as they turn it inside out looking for their missing friend. A mischievous creature may fly off with Minnie, and you'll have to get her back. Now that Minnie is safe, you must help our heroes make it across a vast ocean - on foot! Even the feisty flying fish can't stop Mickey from his search, but what about the cantankerous crocodile waiting at the shore? Enter the world of fantasy, mystery and excitement with Mickey and Minnie as you solve the mystery of Mickey's missing friend!***A nice non-scrolling platform title from Hudson Soft (released by Capcom in the USA) with Disney's most famous star. You play Mickey Mickey on his search for a girl, who happens to be Alice from Alice in Wonderland. He is accompanied by Minnie who follows him automatically. Not as good as later Disney games developed by Capcom themselves, but fun for a one-time runthrough nevertheless.***HFC-MI Mickey Mouse: 不思議の国の大冒険 (ミッキーマウス 不思議の国の大冒険, Mickey Mouse: Fushigi no Kuni do Daibouken. Micky Mouse along with Minnie are off to rescue the kidnapped Alice from Alice in Wonderland (the Japanese title translates Micky Mouse: Adventures in Wonderland). This is a non-scrolling platformer with some adventure elements (locked doors and keys for them.)

If you open the North American cartridge, (not recommended), you can see a Mickey Mouse silhouette on the circuitboard above pin 5.

Both version feature Disney villains as the bosses for each level. But the Japanese version uses Alice in Wonderland baddies while the US version uses a wider mix of Disney characters. In the Japanese versions, Mickey shoots balls of magic (sorcerer's apprentice style) but inexplicable uses Shuriken. There are other minor variations.

Both controller 1 controls Mickey and Minnie. Controller 2 controls Minnie and Mickey. This feature can be exploited to have each character operate somewhat independently. Minnie can fall down holes and lose a life, but is otherwise suffers no permanent effects from other hazards.

Higemaru Makaijima: Nanatsu no Shima Daibouken  Capcom1987UPC code 6-92771-98116-1 actually belongs to another piece of software. This code appears on the Makai Island reproduction cart. Its probably just made up.***The game was never released in the US, but a working english prototype (named Makai Island) exists.***A sequel to an older arcade game from Capcom. Instead of a simple action game "Higemaru Makaijima: Nanatsu no Shima Daibouken" is more some sort of Action-Adventure similar to [game=#9176]The Legend of Zelda[/game]. First you start the game on a ship and you have to find pirate ships, beat the captain to obtain a key, giving you access to islands. The gameplay on the pirate ships is pretty similar to the arcade prequel. You kill enemies by picking up and throwing barrels at them. The islands themselves are quite different from each other, featuring different graphics, enemies and music, which is good for a game from 1987. Not only must you kill all the island bosses but you also have to find different items and find out clues how to open up formerly unaccessible areas. So there is a good chunk of adventure component in here as well. I wasn't able to finish the game because I couldn't find a special ghost ship on the ocean even after searching for it over an hour. Sailing around and finding stuff (ships, island entrances) is the major negative point about this game. Without a map you will find yourself pretty lost. NESlabelimageminimize
Section Z  Capcom1987"Section Z" is a non-linear shoot'em up game. After most levels (sections) you have the choice which section you want to do next. Sometimes you have to destroy generators in certain sections to open up warps to further sections. The player can switch between shooting to the right and to the left; a method Capcom would also use for the better known [game=#185]Side Arms: Hyper Dyne[/game] and [game=#72]Forgotten Worlds[/game]. Graphics and playability are generally ok and the game always runs smoothly. But with a total of 60 sections many levels have a repetitive feel to it. I'd prefer they would have created 5 unique and diverse levels instead of 60 rather similar ones. Famicom Disk Systemlabelimageminimize

Street Fighter Capcom1987These are the streets. And there are no rules when you do battle here.
STREETFIGHTER is strictly survival of the fittest against 8 of the baddest dudes from around the world.

Block their attacks while you counter with jabs and roundhouse kicks.
Don't drop your guard cause these guys aren't just b-b-b-b-bad. They're "Bad to the Bone.***The first game in Capcom's well-known fighting series. A majority of trademarks start here: colorful characters, great backgrounds in a variety of international locations, six attack buttons, and powerful special moves. Unfortunately, what's missing is the most important quality for a game to have. The controls in the game are horrid; even if you've been performing dragon punches for years, you'll find it far more difficult here, if not impossible. Lots of people remember Street Fighter II as the start of the Street Fighter series, and this game will hardly be able to convince them otherwise. It's a shame, since this had so much potential to be great. At least Capcom ironed things out in 1991.

Ide Yosuke Meijin no Jissen Mahjong  Capcom1987Another Mahjong game for the NES. The game itself is nothing to talk much about. It has a good amount of options and all but nothing that really stands out. A solid Mahjong game. Now, while for the game itself I had to try really hard to suppress a little yawn, there is one very special thing about this game. And that specialty comes in form of a Mahjong controller included in the unusually large game box. The game is actually only playable with this special controller. So at least it is something worthwhile for collectors (although it is not an expensive game even with the controller). NESlabelimageminimize

[52]***With "Mega Man" (or "Rockman" in Japan) Capcom started one of the biggest and longest running videogame series ever. It is a very fine game indeed, especially compared to other platform games of that time. Technically well done with nice graphics, music and with very varied level designs. The first NES game is said to be terribly difficult, but that is only half-true. It might be the most difficult of the classic Mega Man games, but compared to similar games from 1987 or earlier it is nothing special. Nearly everything until then was bloody hard.***
[27]***Join the blue bomber in his first-ever adventure as he battles the evil Dr. Wily and his robotic henchmen to restore peace to a troubled world. Mega Man is a super-robot created by the genius scientist Dr. Light. When Dr. Wily goes rogue with an army of six of his own devious robot masters, it's up to Mega Man to put a stop to his nefarious plot by traversing a series of stages rife with enemies, traps and perilous platform challenges. At the end of each stage, conquer one of the robot masters and claim his weapon as your own, using it to your advantage in subsequent fights.***THE MEGA MAN STORY (from the Instruction Manual)

It's MEGA MAN versus the powerful leaders and fighting forces of Monsteropolis -- that strange multi-faceted land of robot-like Humanoids. Brilliant scientist Dr. Wright conceived the construction of fully-operational human-like experimental robots to perform specific everyday duties. Dr. Wright, and his assistant Dr. Wily, encouraged with their very first near human robot -- MEGA MAN -- proceeded to develop six additional Humanoids, all programmed to perform prescribed rituals:

CUTMAN: Designed to function as a lumberjack. A Powerful saw-toothed Scissorlike instrument protrudes from his head, capable of gnawing through giant forest timbers.

ICEMAN: Impervious to chilling sub-zero temperatures, capable of human like performances under extreme climatic conditions.

GUTSMAN: A bulldozing character capable of lifting and transporting huge boulders.

BOMBMAN: A real "blaster" as a heavy duty laborer who uses intensely powerful explosives to clear lands for Dr. Wright's construction projects.

FIREMAN: Melts and molds metals with flame-throwing torch flaring from atop his head.

ELECMAN: Dr. Wright's electrifying creation -- planned for conducting electrical operations -- even supervising nuclear power plants.

But, with the exception of MEGA MAN, all of Dr. Wright's near-human robot experimentation went awry. Assistant Dr. Wily turned disloyal, re-programming Dr. Wright's Humanoids, now bent on destroying opposition so Dr. Wily could control the world and its resources.

Resisting re-programming, MEGA MAN is chosen the defender of the universe and its inhabitants. MEGA MAN dares to single-handedly penetrate seven separate empires of Monsteropolis, eliminating the leaders and followers of these sovereignties.

Get ready for some very exciting challenges!
